Post by: ayemas on Wednesday 08 February 12 09:19 GMT (UK)
Can anyone please tell me what the name of St Bees Parish Church was in 1842,
and is it still standing.
Thank you .
Ayemas.

The parishes in Cumberland can be slightly misleading - in several cases, the "tail wags the dog", so you will find in censuses

St Bees includes Whitehaven
Crosscanonby includes Maryport
Brigham includes Cockermouth
Crosthwaite includes Keswick

St Bees has its own church/priory http://www.stbees.org.uk/churches/index.htm

The Whitehaven churches (Holy Trinity, St Nicholas, St James) and Hensingham were all chapelries within St Bees parish, so finding "St Bees" in the IGI doesn't mean the event happened 4 miles south of Whitehaven. :)

Thank you for your reply Geoff-E,
I had my couple living in Preston Quater St Bees, in the 1841 Census, and
according to Marriage Index, the Marriage took place at St Bees Parish Church, so I just presumed it was
all in St Bees Cumberland.

Thank you for that Geoff -E,
I have a Charles Shepherd born 1810, and in 1841 he's working for a farmer Henry Mossop
Preston Quater St Bees.
Marriage was  12 June 1842, St Bees Parish Church.
To Mary Casson born c 1818
I think she was at Market Place St Bees in 1841
In 1951 census they are in Everton Lancashire with their
2 sons and a daughter.
Much appreciated
Ayemas.

For some reason, I couldn't find that Mary CASSON.  ::)

Henry was definitely in St Bees as the priory church was on the previous page.

I wonder if the clergyman's name would give a clue to the location ... :)

Yes, that's Whitehaven.  On the opposite page I see Gale Lane which must be the Gale's Court on my old map.

I can't see any way of telling it's the right one though ???
