Title: Egremont Cemetery
Post by: ayemas on Wednesday 08 February 12 00:26 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Wondering if someone with a camera could take a couple of picture for me in Egremont cemetery.
The first is for Section F, Con,  Grave Number 71, it has a headstone for  Mary Shepherd.
The second one is in Section H, Con, Grave Number 366, I have no idea if there is a headstone, the name is Charles Shepherd.
Than you.
Ayemas. (Australia)

It is lovely that people like you can help people like me on the other side of the world to put their family tree together. Can I ask was all the Information on the one Headstone. I hope it wasn't too cold or wet for you.
Once again Thank you

Hi Ayemas,

Your very welcome.  Have the cemetery records for Egremont which have a few details on them.
In the area at the moment and have a vague idea where abouts the grave is - fingers crossed we can get the photograph or you. (Hoping it is still standing)

Hi Ayemas,

Found a headstone for Shepherd - this looks like Section F Con 63 rather than F Con 71.
If it is F Con 63 then F Con 71 does not exist anymore - there are numerous blank spaces.
Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas Shepherd is also buried in F Con 63 - buried 8 th June 1918 from 17 Montreal Street. Cleator Moor.

Checked the son Miles Shepherd and his wife Sarah Harrison but they are not buried at Egremont.
The probate for Miles in 1915 stated they were living at 3 Office Cottages. Bigrigg (probate granted to Charles Shepherd and Benjamin Martindale (joiner)) and for Sarah who died 1937, she was living at 37 Crossfield Road. Cleator Moor (probate granted to Charles Shepherd) - so perhaps they could be buried at St John's. Cleator Moor  ???

Hello Sandra,
I have a query regarding buriels at Egremont.
I have that Margaret Cameron  died 28 Sept 1817 aged 62, is buried at St Mary"s Egremont.
Several children are also buried there but I have not been able to find any information for the death of her husband Edward. I don't think that he is named on her headstone.
They had 5 children with the last Hannah baptised 16 Jan 1799.
I suspect that Edward may have died about 1800 ( the family of 5 being smaller than could be expected for the time.)
If you can supply any clues to his death it would be very helpfull.

Hi Wyanga,

This particular Egremont Cemetery opened in August 1864 so unfortunately neither Edward or Margaret would be buried there.
The Parish Church of Egremont - St Mary and St Michael is the original site of two chapels/churches of St Mary and St Michael - demolished then rebuilt 1884. Stands in own church grounds but over the years the area around the Church has been laid with tarmac so there are fewer headstones to see.

I travelled up there last year having prepared a spreadsheet containing all the relevant information re my many family members there.

When I got there it was pouring down with rain and I had left my sheets behind.

Will be there again on Sunday and the spreadsheet is already packed, along with an umbrella and my camera lol

Whilst I was there I found a grave containing members of the Bone family whose names I didn't recognise, so I rang my dad [his grandma being a Bone] to ask if he knew of them.

To which he replied "no cos there are a lot of Bones in Egremont" I replied without thinking "not as many as there in here" lol

Hi Half Pint,

Its been a year or so since we last visited Egremont Cemetery and I honestly thought "vandals" had been at work.  Not so - Egremont Town Council are the "culprits"
They are pushing over any headstone deemed to be unsafe and leaving them on the ground, which means some cannot be read again because the inscriptions are face down - Health and Safety gone mad again  ???

Shout if you need any help.  ;)

Hello Sandra,
I am looking for the burial of a John Hodgson b 1888 and died Nov 18, 1924 in Scalegill Place, Egremont. He wouldn't have any other immediate family (that I know of) buried with him as his wife Hannah remarried after his passing. There could be siblings of course, as he had a somewhat notable Uncle named Martin Hodgson(overseer of the Florence Mine) that the town shut down it's mining operations for his funeral the day of Oct 31, 1928 in Egremont. His wife was named Rachel. Is it possible that you could find his burial spot also?

I appreciate your time and effort,
Kind regards,
Jan

Oh thank you so much for this Sandra. The Ann that is buried with John is his mother. I'm so thrilled that we finally have found her. Her husband is buried in South Africa and we thought the same for her as there are not any records that we can access at this time. The young girl buried is Agnes, Martin and Rachel's daughter. I am very grateful for your efforts. Is the Cemetery just called Egremont Cemetery and is it on North Road also?

Bless you,

Thank you again Sandra for the news of Elizabeth. This poor woman was 9 months pregnant with Martin (youngest of 9 children) when she was widowed after her husband James was killed in the mine he worked in. Is there any record of his burial inn this cemetery?

Post by: *Sandra* on Saturday 20 July 13 21:06 BST (UK)
In 1990 there was a by pass built at Egremont. The new road looks as if it is also called North Road. 63 North Road is a row of terraced houses inside that new road. The Cemetery is on the right hand side of the new by pass as you exit Egremont towards Whitehaven on the A595.
I have some Cemetery photographs which I will take a look through to see if any are of the headstones of the Hodgson Family. Will get back to you on that.

Sandra you are a dear! The Australasia record I have already which made me wonder why Moses Hodgson (we have 5 in the family)( husband of Ann whom you have found) did not return from Africa with his wife and sons. This led me to believe he is buried in SA as he was a gold and copper miner there. I will make a small list of names for those we cannot find due to the name similarity in the death indexes. There are too many to order documents for so cemetery is my only ally at the moment to close the gap. Will be back with the tougher ones to see if you can find them there. I cannot thank you enough and you are too kind!

Thank you for tracking Doris and family. I did have that one completed except for the marriage record.

Jonah Hodgson died Mar 5, 1904 -address 35 East Road. Killed in a mine. His second wife  was Mary Jane died 1927 address  37 North Rd.
-his first wife was either Elizabeth Benson or Ann Grimshaw but I cannot find a death record for either. Married in 1872 to the latter. MaryJane appears on the 1891 census.

George Hodgson b.1885 and married wife Margaret Mein and the last record of him I have is signing John Hodgson's death cert in 1924 (your first discovery in this list) George lived at 65 Arrowthwaite Villas. Sister Doris lived there with him and his family. I cannot find a death record for him either.

Another brother James b 1884 and last record I have for him is his marriage to Hannah Elizabeth Johnstone in 1916. He also lived in Bootle which may be off track now.

James Hodgson died Jun 1920 - wife Elizabeth address 20 North rd.

What can I say to ALL this overwhelming information that I could have never found on my own especially living in Canada. My family tree book will be a wonderful legacy for all of my family's grandchildren. You have solved many an endless search on my part and I cannot express my  gratitude enough for everything you have done. I'm in tears over this and you have made my day! One last question and I will leave you to rescue another frustrated soul. Are allof these relatives in the same cemetery so that I may list them accordingly in their profiles? I take it the Cemetery name is just called Egremont Cemetery. if you come across any pictures that would colour the pages I have then I would be forever I your debt.

Bless you,

These pictures are so touching and very welcomed. You have made my day yet again.
I do have a question though. In yesteday's thread you posted the burial of Elizabeth Hodgson, mother of Martin but I wonder if there is a grave reference for her as we might have missed that.
I truly appreciate your contributions so much more than I can say!
Thank you for keeping my family in mind while you are working.

Hi Sandra,
I've come across a probate for another James Hodgson of 63 North Road  wife named Hilda. He died Dec 13, 1950, close to the death of another James Hodgson. It's ironic that so many of my family are called James Hodgson which are at that residence there were two cousins plus Martin Hodgson's son. All are born with 10 years of each other. Can you look and see if you have a James Hodgson with a wife Hilda as I don't have her in my tree yet but the address tells me she's family.
With so many James Hodgson marriage records during that time, I cannot identify which were my ones. The grave search has helped immensely to narrow that down.

Again I appreciate your time,

Jan

James Hodgson died 13 December 1950 (probated 8 Feb 1951) was buried 16 December 1950. Grave Ref L Con 122 - purchased in 1943. Address 63 North Road. Egremont
He would appear to the son of Martin and Rachel born 1899 and aged 51 years.
Perhaps this James married March 1937 to Hilda Greenop at Cockermouth 10b 1098, it was the only match with a Hilda I came across. Unfortunately did not come across any burial for a Hilda Hodgson

The James in reply 33 buried 13 November 1950 A Con 59 was the son of James Hodgson and Elizabeth Sewell. Address 20 North Road. Egremont.

Sandra, Thanks again for keeping my dates straight. There are even more James Hodgsons in that time frame. This is what happens when Elizabeth has 9 children and each one has a son James. I need a huge spreadsheet to see them all. Priscilla Hodgson Cavanagh was Priscilla Jenkinson prior to a Cavanagh. She had a son James Hodgson Jenkinson b1878 and lived at 55 North Road. After he left home and his mother remarried he changed his surname back to Hodgson which makes it difficult to find him again. Would you have a burial record for that one?

I am starting to look at another son of Elizabeth named William 1870 and possibly died 1918 address 87 Main Street. He had a wife Hannah Parks. b.1876 and possible death 1959.

Another William Hodgson b.1898 in S Africa and died July 1995. Wife Olive Mary possible death 1963. One male child unknown info.

If your up for it I am looking for Priscilla's sister Agnes Hodgson Banks b1867 and poss death 1945 - address Ribton Side Whitehaven. Husband Joseph Banks -  had a butcher shop.

If your swamped with  other requests you don't need to jump to this :) I could do it later if possible.

Thank you again,
Jan

Hi Sandra, yes there were rumours that Rachel had in fact 3 sets of twins. Now your latest message confirms it. Hilda is also part of a set of twins. Her sister Mabel survived.

Reply #45 referring to James Jenkinson Hodgson. He was born prior to Priscilla's marriage to Jenkinson. When she remarried to Cavanagh James went to live at 63 North Rd with his grandmother Elizabeth. He is so hard to pin down I lost track of him after 1901. He lived at 55 North Road in 1901 Having  a cousin by the same name in 1874 makes looking for records difficult as ages are never exact. Perhaps he died.

Hello Sandra,
Is there someone that looks up burials in Penrith St Andrews as I have my oldest John Hodgson 1782-1790 who died there. Last address was 11 Town Head, Penrith, Cumberland in 1851. His wife Priscilla died in 1859 but I do not know where she is buried. They have lived around St Andrews Church yard throughout their married life. They had 2 sons  still living with them in 1851 Thomas b.1831 and John b.1829. Unfortunately I cannot find John 1790 after the 1851 census or the boys. I wondered if he died shortly after his wife and possibly buried with her. Her death date was Jul qtr of 1859 in Penrith. I hoping if some has the burial records then perhaps the address can pinpoint which John Hodgson is mine. Unfortunately there are a few.
Can you direct me?

Ever thankful for your input,

Jan

Hi Sandra,
I have that Margaret Cameron died 25th Sept 1817 and is buried at St mary's Egrremont,
I am trying to find the death of her husband Edward.
Their last child Hannah was baptised 16 jan 1799 so I suspect that Edward has died about 1800.
Can you tell me where I would find Buriel records for Egremont for that period.

Hi Wyanga,

Remember Coulderton (Stephen) checking for Edward Cameron's death record at the local records office in 2012 but he was not listed on any burial index for Egremont.  Reply 12 - this was the previous thread:-

Thank you Sandra, I was wondering if it may have been worth checking Bishops transcripts or another source of records such as Carlisle.
It seems strange that the family was living at Egremont from at least 4th Jan 1784 when the first son Joseph was baptised and that Margaret was still there until her death in 1817, that there is no record for the death of Edward.
