I have been unable to find a marriage for a couple, Mary Fairhurst and Samuel Hurst. There is however an entry that fits very well in lan-opc apart from the groom's surname, and it is also indexed this way in the GRO index and Lancashire bmd.
All Saints, Wigan, 25 Aug 1850
Samuel Downs (X), 24 Bachelor, Labourer, Pemberton
Mary Fairhurst (X), 20 Spinster, Pemberton
Groom's Father: John Downs, Labourer
Brides's Father: None
Ages of Samuel, Mary and John are correct as are occupations, I also believe Mary was illegimate. The only thing wrong is the groom's surname.
I can get to Wigan fairly easily after work and checked the original, what they didn't tell me when I booked was that they don't keep the banns.
I can't see the Banns at the Lancashire Records Office so I think Leigh may be the place to see them. Leigh is much more difficult to get to and has limited opening hours. If anyone is going to Leigh Archives and can have look I would be grateful if you could check the banns to see if they correspond to the marriage.
Thanks,
Deryck

Thanks for the effort, but I really need to look at the banns for the Mary Fairhurst marriage. I have applied for their first child's birth certificate who was illegimate which I hope may show an address. Knowing my luck it will just say Pemberton. I have had a look for Samuel Downs, but can't see him, hence the interest in the Downs/Fairhurst marriage.

Have you tried contacting Leigh Archives and asking if they have the banns register would they have a quick look for you?
Any banns for the 1840s I have seen give less information than is on the marriage certificate. What extra information are you expecting to find on the banns?
