Title: James Burns - nephew of Robert Burns
Post by: Rosie60 on Monday 06 February 12 21:19 GMT (UK)
Hi,

On searching the IGI, I have come across a James Burns (nephew of Robert Burns) who died in Erskine, Renfrewshire on 22nd June 1847. I cannot find any record of this death on 'Scotlandspeople' and wondered if anyone knows if this information is accurate and if correct, has anyone any idea where James might be buried.

Thankyou.

Hi Rosie60
as the death is outwith official registration which only started 1855 there
will not be a death certificate
and Burns is such a common name it may be difficult to track down a burial place
for him, what was his last known address (1841 census) may help with that,
that would maybe narrow it down a bit

Hi Elaine, Thanks for your reply and interest.  'Scotlandspeople' do have a section for death in the Old Parish Records, pre 1855 though, which is where I went to search, but with no luck, I'm afraid.

they are only Parish records and a lot of them dont
have a lot of information on them mostly just that a fee was paid to the parish
for the burial,
Elaine
do you know anything else about James that may help find him

I think he was born on 14th April 1794. His parents were Gilbert Burns (brother to Robert) and Jean Breckenridge.
I am trying to distinguish this James Burns from another James Burns (who is an ancestor of my sister-in-law). She believes her James Burns is a descendant of Robert Burns and I think she is mistaken. Hence my quest to find out where James (nephew of Robert) died and is buried. The IGI states that James died in Erskine, but I'm not sure how to go about endorsing this piece of information.

Hi Rosie
I am sorry but I think this would be very difficult to prove
its possible if any of Gilbert and Jean's children live post 1855
that their parents names would be on their death certs,
but as James died pre 1855, even if he had married there wouldn't be
a marriage cert to prove that this was the right James
I wouldn't even know who to contact to see if they could help
but there are quite a few sites that give details on Robert Burns and his family
I would be reading them to see if there is any information that may reveal anything
