Post by: Caz0202 on Monday 06 February 12 21:17 GMT (UK)
Hi all

It's possible this gentleman is related to me. He was imprisoned in Colchester in the 1891 census, he then moved to Middlesbrough and married a woman called Ellen Cairns in 1892 we think!

He was a member an army in a fusilier regiment and is listed in Colchester military prison in the 1891 census please help!

What other details do you have?
father's name and occupation (from marriage certificate)?
any idea where in County Londonderry he was born/lived?

There were lots of Cassidys in the Kilrea area. Two from extracted Irish births (www.familysearch.org)-
16 May 1869 Kilrea district parents- James Cassidy/Elizabeth Watt
31 May 1970 Kilrea district parents- Hugh Cassidy/Sarah Jane McCoey
The database is not complete so there could be others in this period.

We think it's Hugh and Sarah but not sure!

How do we verify it?

His marriage certificate should give father's name and occupation (mother not listed on Englaish marriage certificates).

If Hugh and Sarah Jane are the parents here's a possibility for John's mother in 1901 census- Moneygran is a townland outside Kilrea:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Kilrea/Moneygran/1520927

Probably the William Cassidy listed in above census- (www.proni.gov.uk):
"Probate of the Will (with one Codicil) of William Cassidy late of Moneygran County Londonderry Farmer who died 7 August 1905 granted at Londonderry to Henry Lennox Farmer."

I gave you the details for what is probably the marriage of John and Ellen (names appear on same page of register). The 1911 census will also give how many years married. You can order the marriage certificate from G.R.O. for £9.25

Just a note, James Cassidy and Elizabeth Watt went to Greenock Scotland where Elizabeth passed away prior to 1875. I know this because he then married Mary Leech (also from Ireland) and became stepfather to my great grandfather. Of James and Elizabeth's four children born in Ireland, I've seen no evidence that the first three Mary, Nancy Jane or John lived out childhood. James and Elizabeth show up in census data with only the fourth child, Elizabeth, and my great grandfather, Thomas White.
