Title: Any detectives for this one?
Post by: netgrrl79 on Monday 06 February 12 16:29 GMT (UK)
I've found a picture of a grave at Sion Chapel, Aberdulais, which going by the transcription sounds as if it may contain one set of my great-great grandparents. However, as their names are Daniel and Margaret JONES, I am unsure as to how I would determine whether they are 'mine'.

Any thoughts gratefully accepted - the transcription can be viewed at http://liber-mortuorum.com/aberdulais/sion/index.html#092 - the grave in question is that of William Jones, son of Daniel and Margaret who died 23 May 1882.
boy bo
The sticking point is this - I know that my ancestors had a son called William, who was 8 on the 1881 census and doesn't feature on the 1891 with his parents (tho of course he may have married or been working elsewhere or both!), but the William referred to on this grave is transcribed as having died aged 3 - am I silly for hoping it actually says 8? Don't know if I am seeing what I want to see on the photo lol

EDIT - After a search of FreeBMD for William Jones dying in Neath in 1882 +/- 1, I've found an 8yr old but no 3yr olds. Obviously I realise he may not have died in Neath but I know that my Welsh lines did not (so far) go wandering all over the country like my English lines did!

Thanks Kerry but as I said in PM (for the benefit of everyone) my William was born in Neath, not Anglesey :)

I wish I had North Walians in my tree - would make life easier lol!

The Gravestone mentions other family members, which may help you to identify whether they are "yours". Also it is a Tonna (Neath) family:

In memory of William, son of Daniel and Margaret Jones, from Tonna
who died May 23rd 1882, age 3 years
.......
Also baby Thomas their son, who died 11th March 1895, age 8 years old (think this should be 3)

Also John, their son, who died 19th January 1887, age 5 weeks old.

Also the above Margaret Jones who died 11th December 1909, age 50
....
Also the above Daniel Jones, who died 24th january 1915, age 72

The stone is too worn to say whether it is 3 or 8  :-\

Modified - Having looked at it again, I think it's a 9, and there is a Neath death in the relevant quarter with age 9  :)

Thanks morganllan... I think I may have to send Glamorgan Records Office an e-mail to see if/how they can help.

Hello Katie  :)

Do the ages match your Daniel and Margaret? Can you post their details from the various census records you have for them?

Best Wishes
Morgan

Oops... on closer inspection of the census, I don't think they are mine as my Margaret died well before 1909 :( - Daniel is listed as a widower on the 1901

Sorry guys!

Well, don't rule it out yet. We can't see the bottom of the stone so are relying on the provided transcription. If you search freebmd for deaths of Margaret Jones, age 50, 1891-1901, there are some in Neath in 1895, 1896, and 1900. The death in 1900 is December quarter so it's possible that the year was 1900 not 1909.

How old would your Margaret be in 1900? How old was your Daniel, 72 at the start of 1915? Were they from the Tonna area of Neath?

The age of 9 for William in May 1882, would fit your William?

Best Wishes
Morgan

Is this your family in 1881?

Daniel Head age 34 born Aberdulais, Glamorgan Coal Miner
Margaret  Wife age 30  born Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire
William Son age 8 born Neath, Glam  Scholar
Elizabeth Ann Daur age 6 born Neath, Glam  Scholar
Thomas Son age 3 born Neath, Glam
Mary Daur age 9 months  born Neath, Glam

Tonna Road, Llantwit Lower, Glamorgan

RG11 Piece 5342 Folio 52 Page 8

If so, I can see the Tonna and Aberdulais connection so it is likely the right family. :)
