Post by: Joyful on Saturday 04 February 12 21:12 GMT (UK)

I need help deciphering this occupation please.

It is taken from the 1871 census for Lancashire Yorkshire & Durham Part E

   Pg 2.

Taken literally it looks like Cuniel - you can see the dot on the i. Though I did wonder about Pumice even though the first letter doesn't look like a P.

Any chance of the full census refernce so we can compare writing elsewhere? I don't know how to find the page with the info given so far I'm afraid.

I don't have access to the census so could you give a little info about the gender/age of the person?  Could it be 'Anniu' for annuitant (?sp) i.e. someone in receipt of an annuity/pension?

Could it possibly be CURRIER?

Currying was the name given to the process of stretching and finishing tanned leather before passing it on to a saddler or cobbler.

Hi, could it be currier?

It is taken from the 1871 census for Lancashire Yorkshire & Durham Part E

   Pg 2.

The Census Reference should be RG10; Piece: xxxx; Folio: xx; Page: xx
Lancashire Yorkshire & Durham Part E is not correct

Thanks Stan, I am transcribing and they are the only details on the census form.

There is NO folio number on the form only the page number.

I apologise if that information is not correct but it's all I have.

As you don't have a census ref can you please give us the name and birthplace of the person, and the address (town/parish etc.)?

Surely the first letter has to be a "C". I've looked at every reference I can find on the web and currier is the only occupation remotely resembling the image.

Ancestry gives the reference as: Piece 3982, Folio 123, Pg 2 (at least I was right with the page number!)

I see that in 1881 the family was still at the same address (Hyde Rd, Gorton) - James now a "coal dealer": RG11/3904/57/57.

The only things I can make it say are "Currier", or maybe "Carrier"  :-\

If you look at the page though nearer the top there is someone who is a Cooper and his wife is a Coopers wife and the C is entirely different

I did see that, candleflame, but there are some other Cs on the same page and adjacent ones that look very similar, obviously the writer wasn't too fussed with consistency  :)

So, general consensus is 'Currier' :-\

Thanks to you all for trying to work it out for me :) :)

Page 6 has a similar one and that looks like currier I have to say. Perhaps the enumerators hand was tired  on page 2 and recovered by page 6:)
