I've been unable to access the TalkingScot website for approaching 3 weeks, the consistant error message being -
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 5940213 bytes) in /home/16095/talkingscot/www.talkingscot.com/public_html/forum/includes/acm/acm_file.php on line 430
Does this mean that TalkingScot is defunct ?!
-
TalkingScot is not defunct. It is having technical difficulties with the forum. The problem is being worked on in the background and it is hoped to be back up and running properly soon.
The problem is intermittent for most people. Try at different times of day and you may be lucky. Some people are not having the problem at all.

Hi Kirkmichael
Is there is any particular reason why the topic is headed up 'ScotlandsPeople' when the discussion is regarding problems with the TalkingScot site?

A workaround that seems to work to access the TalkingScot forum while it is not working as it should, is to go to the FAQ page first. Then you should be able to go to the forum from there.

That is good to know. I've had a break from genealogy so presumed the TS site was now out of comission. Good to read that is not the case.
-
I've been able to access it through the FAQ link all last week until today, when i haven't been able to get on at all.
AAARRGH!
-
Yes, you are right, the route into the TalkingScot forum via the FAQ page is no longer working. It too is producing the 'fatal error' message.
For those who have the 'log me in automatically' box ticked, there is no problem, the forum is there working as normal.
There is now more urgent work being done in the background to resolve these problems, and the TS Admin Group hopes to have the site back to normal as early as can be done. Unfortunately this is not an overnight job, so please bear with us, we are working on it.
In the meantime, keep trying to access the forum. The problem is intermittent (more off than on) for those who are not automatically logged on.

Nobody's password was removed from the forum side of things. The forum software is failing us just now. We hope to be back up and running soon.

Hi Bruce,
I have searched the log files. They show that you changed your e-mail address in your user profile on that morning. The software forces a reactivation upon you changing your e-mail address. Your membership was reactivated by one of the Admin Group 21 minutes after you changed your e-mail address.

Hi ADP

-
Yes, that is the case, but be assured that work is still in progress. Unfortunately it is taking longer than we would have hoped.

I have not been able to access their site at all for about a week now.
I could get in on odd occasions over the past while but now nothing works.Frustrating!

This problem has been going on for quite a while now! I had been using the FAQ method for quite some time, but now I haven't been able to get in that way for more than 2 weeks now. I can't believe they can't fix this problem. Maybe they're not aware how many people are having trouble, but it seems to be quite widespread - I cant get in with IE or Firefox or my phone, so I would have to expect that a lot of other people are also experiencing it. The error message indicates they should increase a PHP parameter to allocate more memory - but I imagine that if it was as simple as that they would have fixed it by now?

All very strange ...... ???
I don't have any problems getting into the site at all and visit in an almost daily basis.

I can still get in from our desktop computer, but not from my laptop since a tidy-up when I cleared cookies.
If you can still access the site, leave cookies well alone!
-
The site must surely be aware of downturn in usage and hopefully when they get it up and running again they will send out an email to this effect.
I can not remember how many weeks it is since I last managed to access the site .

I have not been able to access the site for a few months now
Same problem as everyone else
I thought they had lost their server again
-
Yes , this is not the first time they have gone down.
If I recall it is at least the third time since it began.

GOOD NEWS: :)
TalkingScot is now back online on its new host web server. The web address should make its way around the web over the next 24 hours. You may be able to access the site now; if not you should gain access at some point over the next 24 hours.

Hello.
I suggest that you don't rely on old links. Make a new start with the full www.talkingscot.com address.
A search has just taken me to that site, AND given me access to the forum hit. A first for many weeks. Previously got a broken link message.

From what I read, it would appear ADP that one of these is in order. A NZ treat.

I just tried logging on a minute ago after some months since my last visit to the site. I am still getting a 'Fatal error' message (although slightly different from the one that originally appeared, apparently). Is anybody else still having a problem? Any ideas how to get around things?
