Joseph Freeman Henry's birth was registerd in June 1/4 1913-S. Shieds-Jarrow Sub District. He spent all his young life, with a brother, in a children's home. Can anyone tell me which homes existed in 1913 please?
Is it possble that records might have survived? Joe died in Canada n 1978.
Mother's name `Thakra`- possibly Thackeray or simiar.

From Kelly's Directory of Durham, 1914, South Shields:
The Children’s Homes which comprise 6 pairs of cottages, Boys’ Industrial Home, laundry, workshops &c. & administrative block are situated at Sunniside, Cleadon, & are built on a site of 18½ acres in extent, the purchase price of which was £4,250. The buildings, erected at a cost of £19,705, provide accommodation for 210 children & 40 at the receiving home. The homes were opened by Granville Druery esq. on Dec. 16th, 1908, and the children transferred from the workhouse on January 9th 1909; Anthony Smith, superintendent; Mrs. Agnes Smith, matron.
