Hi Everyone
I hope someone can help. My husbands grandparents came to Australia on the 11 November 1949 as displaced persons from Poland. Because they lived in Parkes until they passed i was thinking they may have been at the camp. Their names are Michal Marciniak, his wife Kataryna and their daughter Izabella. If anyone can give me a lead I would be very grateful. Thanks Kerszk

Parkes Migrant Camp???
There was a big camp at Greta, too, you know.
Plus others of course.
Have you checked for anything at NAA?
What is it you are actually looking for?

Thank you for you reply Dawn.
I am trying to find out which camp they went to. Because they lived in parkes I was just guessing this might have been the camp. I would like to get confirmation of which camp they were in. kerszk

There is a digitised file on
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/using/search/
I searched using their surname.

Yes there was a migrant camp at Parkes - I understand there were a lot of displaced persons there, who subsequently stayed at Parkes for the rest of their lives.
The Marciniaks were on the Electoral Roll in 1958, so were probably naturalised before that - the National Archives of Australia (www.naa.gov.au) may be able to help - not sure how far up their naturalisation records go.
1958 Electoral Roll, Calare, Parkes
Marciniak, Michal, 29 Federal street, labourer
Marciniak, Katarzyna, 29 Federal street, home duties
Was that Mical who died in 1981 (parents Stanislaw and Anna) but no place of registration given. Katarzyna died in 1985.
Good luck tracing them

Thank you Jean
Yes that is certainly the family I am looking for.
I may get intouch with the NAA and see if they can help.
Kerszk

Yes I have just noticed that. Are there no family stories of their early life in Parkes?
There is an incoming passenger list to Fremantle "General Blatchford" arrived 5 November 1949 which lists them. I wonder if the file would have where they were placed. The passenger lists were for people who either disembarked at Fremantle or passed through Fremantle to other ports. Search the Passenger Arrival Index.
Cheers :)

I think you are all wonderful.
I didnt know Michal's parents name. So thank you for helping me . Can I ask where you got this info Jeanlit.
NAA states they arrived in Fremantle but went on to Sydney and disembarked on the 11 November 1949.

The file has been digitised and you can either save each page or print it.
This is a link to the first page

Is this the file you viewed?

Here are a couple of websites you may find interesting to get some background on the Migrant camps.
An article from the local Parkes paper about the 50th anniversary:

Post WW2 migration and memories:

I have misunderstood...I thought you were applying for the linked file from NAA.
I wonder if the file on the Passenger Arrival Index would be helpful.
According to the 1980 electoral roll they were living at 9 Alluvial Streeet, Parkes.
Cheers :)

Sorry Cando
It may have been the way I explained it. I have the immigration papers for both grandparents and Izabella. It is the passenger arrival file I am waiting to here back from NAA.
Could I ask a question of you. Are the electrol rolls for that area available online?
Kerry
-
Electoral rolls to 1980 are available on ancestry.com.au NSW rolls are various years between 1930 and 1980.
Can I help you at all for anything to 1980? Jean may be able to help you with later rolls.
Cheers

Thanks
They arrived 1949 and I have 1958 is there anything inbetween?
How would I find out when they were naturalized?
Kerry
-
Not that I can see.
The NAA should be able to help you with naturalization information.
Perhaps these enrolments are of interest.

The Parkes cemetery records are online but there is a problem with the site at the moment. Parks Council have a note on their website that it should be available again.

Hi kerszk, I should think that Parkes Shire Council would have the information you require and it should be available under the new GIPA act which relates to the release of public information they can be contacted and an electronic form downloaded at.
http://www.parkes.nsw.gov.au/index.php?option=com_jentlacontent&view=landing&id=194&Itemid=743
Most Councils in country towns around Australia conduct Naturalization Ceremonies, now on Australia Day. However some Block ceremonies did take place in the 1950's because of the huge influx of intended Australians.
Try them they should know who was naturalised and when and it should give some idea of abode. I believe the Street they lived in was in a new Suburb created for the purpose of housing these migrants after naturalization.
Good Luck ;)
Neil ;D

Thanks Neil
l will contact the council to see if they can tell me anything. Thanks for the info on the street, makes me feel they must have been at the Parkes camp. Will keep searching. Kerry

Hello BMiller
Thank you so much for your reply with this information on Isabella Marciniak. I am very grateful for your help. The family has very little information on this part of their family.
Are you aware of the school she was enrolled at?
Regards Kerszk

Hi Kerszk, The records are from the Camp school at Parkes, apparently all the migrant camps had their own schools, I just found out. The link below will take you to the site.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01eru/
It would seem that the records are sealed for a time but as it is over 50 years now the records are open so you can access them from the above.
Happy Hunting ;D

Parkes is my old home town, I know there was a migrant camp located at the airport, they must have had a school at the site. I have photos of all pages of the enrolment book and also a copy of the 1988 reunion.

Thank you BMiller
Isabella and her parents settled in Parkes and remained there all their lives. Isabella ha a sister Alfreda who migrated before them with her husband Frank. They were settled around the Latrobe Valley area and then Morwell in Victoria. Alfreda is my husbands mother. She is now 88 years old has 6 children, 17 grandchildren and 23 great great grand children.
I would love to get a copy of the enrolment book if that is possible.
