Title: Mays, Sawtry, Huntingdonshire
Post by: Stalbridge on Friday 03 February 12 17:39 GMT (UK)
Please can anyone help with earlier records for this family which appears on 1871 England Census. John Mays  born abt 1838 (there seem to be many variants of spelling eg Mayes, Marys, Maise - Marys is used on 1871 Census). There are Census references to both All Saints and St Andrew's, Sawtry. I can go forwards from this date but not back to a record of spouse, marriage, birth or baptism. There is a remote possibility that there was a connection with Methodism. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Just to get the full details of the 1871 in front of us -

RG10 1524 33 16
The Sapling, Sawtry
John Mays 33 farm labourer bn Sawtry All Saints
Mary 29 bn Sawtry All Saints
James 7 bn Sawtry St Andrews
John Robert 3 bn Sawtry St Andrews
Martha Ann 2 mths  bn Sawtry St A

A birth cert of one of these children would give MAry's maiden name, and thus help pinpoint the marriage.

I like the look of the marriage on FreeBMD of John MAyes, JAn/Feb/Mar 1862 Huntingdon 3b 354, but there is only one brie listed to go with the grooms. I just wonder if the missing bride might be our MAry?

Hello "magslote"
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my request. This marriage to Mary Gynn does come up in another person's tree but neither of us have a source citation. Did you actually find one? I have searched to no avail! It does seem right but I'd love some proof! Will keep my eyes on the boards.

Looking at the original GRO index page for a Mary Gynn  Mar 1862 Huntingdon 3b  the entry is difficult to read - it looks like 3 5 4 as the page number.  But the index is transcribed as 3 3 4

You might want to order the certificate for John with the 354 GRO reference.

Hope this helps

K.

Just checked FreeBMD and there is a postem to the John Mayes entry dated 9/8/2008 referencing a copy of the marriage certificate for John and a Mary Gynn.  Married 4 Feb 1862, Sawtry, Huntingdonshire No 175.
