Title: Southburton query
Post by: castlebob on Friday 03 February 12 17:21 GMT (UK)
Hello All,
Can anyone tell me if there was a Southburton in 14th C Northumberland (or possibly Durham)? Also, if it did exist, where was it & is it called something else now?
Cheers,
Bob

Hi Bob,

It's not one I've come across before but it could have been the name of a farm or small holding rather than a town or village.  Where did you get the name from?

Nothing is showing up in Genuki but there are a few places with Burton in the title in Yorkshire.

There is a small community south of Bamburgh called Burton which consists as far as I can tell of West Burton and East Burton but unfortunately no South_Burton, the Keys to the Past website indicates there is an abandoned village site near Burton that was a going concern up till the early 19th C......other than that ....?????

...or it could be South Burdon east of Darlington.... there is a similar question archived on Rootsweb...

Thanks everyone,
I got the info via some old scraps of paper with place names written in pencil! No other refs, except the other places mentioned were all in Northumberland or Durham.
Cheers,
Bob

It is possible that it's Burton near Bamburgh as Phil suggested.  According to one of my place name reference books the earliest known reference to Burton is 1242 so would certainly have existed in 14th century.

As I said earlier it could well be a farm rather than a village - particularly if it was south of Burton!

Thanks All,
I've just found a ref to Berwick written by the same hand that mentioned Southburton, so wonder if the latter may be in Berwickshire? I shall look north of the b order.
Cheers,
Bob

Search over! I just found it mentioned in some other paperwork concerned with Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire. Sorry to have sent you all on a wild goose chase!
Cheers,
Bob
