Does anyone have any information on Joseph Pearce (born abt 1872) who married Annie Louise Boniface in Eastbourne in 1894? Information from his daughter's baptism record lists him as a stoker in the Royal Navy. I think I may have found him in the 1891 census, living with a sister (or possibly sister-in-law) in Portsmouth, where he is listed as a RN Able Seaman, born in Eastbourne. I can find no other record of him anywhere. Any information gratefully received.
Cheers, Sue

Thanks for the quick reply, but no-go I'm afraid. In the 1901 census Annie and her daughter Nellie are living with her (Boniface) parents in Eastbourne and in 1911 census she is living with her children in Portsmouth. I can only assume that Joseph was at sea or posted elsewhere, but it would be nice to find him in 1881 if possible, to identify his parents.
Thanks anyway

I was just about to say that, and change my post!
Do you know when, and where, Joseph was born?

The only clue I have is the 1891 census, where he is living with an Annie Pearce in Portsmouth. He is listed as being 19 and born in Eastbourne. However, I can find no definite birth record for him there. He is listed as being the brother of Annie Pearce, but as she is listed as being married, she could be his sister-in-law rather than sister. Her birthplace is difficult to read. Standbrook??? in Sussex. This is the only census record I have found for him so far. My only other avenue may be to get a copy of his marriage certificate, as this should give the name of his father, but I'm not sure if I'm that desperate yet!

There was a Joseph Pierce baptised 25 Feb 1872 in Jevington St Andrew. Eastbourne is 2 miles away. His parents are Moses, labourer, and Ellen.

This looks to be his service record, the date column is the date of birth given by him on enlistment.

This man was awarded the British War Medal for his service during WW1, then rated as Chief Stoker.

Gosh everyone, you have been SO helpful. Such a lot of great information in such a short time. I really am very grateful. I will pass all this on to Joseph's Pearce's grand-daughter, who I know will be equally grateful and amazed at how quickly we've got so much information.
