Title: wi-fi interference
Post by: dixons on Friday 03 February 12 15:43 GMT (UK)
While giving a Powerpoint presentation(s) I keep getting 'interrupted' by my AOL seeking local Wi-Fi signals to log on to.

I thought I would be able to right click on AOL icon on toolbar to cancel (temporarily) internet interaction but cannot see any method of doing this.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi

If you are using a laptop, cant you just turn the Wi-Fi off - it's f12 on mine?

Or a little switch on the side/front/back on other laptops

Hi Both,

Many thanks for suggestions. Most appreciated.

Have tried f12 as suggested (and other f's) but no joy.

Laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000) has no buttons for this function.

There must be some way round it but I'm dashed if I can figure it out. It is really spoiling presentations as you can imagine.

regards,

Have you tried this - found it by googling Dell Inspiron 6000. You need page 16

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6000/en/om/D5181bk5.pdf

The green lights located above the keyboard indicate the following:
Turns on when the numeric keypad is enabled.
Turns on when the uppercase letter function is enabled.
Turns on when the scroll lock function is enabled.
Turns on when wireless networking is enabled. To enable or
disable wireless networking, press <Fn><F2>.

Hi Groom,

Thank you so much. This is exactly the information that I needed. Problem solved.

As a point of interest; before receiving your answer, I had been on the phone to Dell Support re the problem. When I say 'on the phone' I mean for about ten minutes or so listening to awful music before a 'human' answered.

After explaining the problem, this 'expert' said he would have to pass me on to another dept. as it sounded like an Windows XP problem (raised eyebrows from me).

After a few more minutes of even worse music this 'more expert' expert (in India) listened to my problem (several times of course because of the language problems) and finally said to press Fn + F2 to enable/disable wi-fi connection.

When I asked him would I get some indication on the screen to let me know if this action was taking place (trying the procedure as I spoke to him, with nothing visible on the screen) he just kept saying to press the keys to disable and enable the function.

I told him that I was not happy that this was a complete solution. He just repeated the same thing again - and again, till finally I gave up!

Knowing which of the green light indicators to look for is the final bit of the jigsaw that I needed. Pity he didn't seem to know this.

Have owned the Dell Inspiron for about 4 years with no problems I'm completely underwhelmed by their so called Support Centre when I did actually need their support.

You should be able to turn off the Wi Fi so it does not interupt what you are doing on the laptop elsewhere. Seeing as we are on the topic of improving your knowledge of working laptops/computers I went on a highly recommend a course that teaches you all about software and online shopping (http://www.groupon.ie/vouchers/) etc/ security risks and basic understaning of using programmes from miscrosoft work to excel and more advances ones as Indesign.  I went on the course for a few weekd and now feel much more comfortable using the web and programmes wihtout getting a virus etc.
