Hi,
I am stuck with my tree and need a bit of help.
If anyone has access to birth/baptismal records for Erdington could you please have a look for something for me please?
I am looking for James Simmons b. 1830 approx, some records indicating 1826. Mother is Sarah and father John. Not having any luck finding his mother/father before so mother's maiden name may help and records might give a bit more info.
Thanks.

Mother's maiden names didn't appear until the 1837 BMD Act,there's a slim chance that if he was baptised into a Non-Conformist religion it might then appear but not in the established Church.
Can you tell us what you have already.

I know nothing more about his mother and father. However, I have found a record from 1841 census with a James Simmons, aged 17, Mother Sarah aged 57 - this could be them but there is no father. It says she was not born in England.

I think you have the right family in 1841.
looking at the St.Martin's christenings where James & Ellen were christened their address in 1823 & 1849 when Ellen was christened is Nova Scotia St. which is the same address as the family you found in 1841.
John's birth is given as 30th. July 1823.As coincidence would have it my GGGrandfather is on the same page.
The 1841 census says she was not born in the County it doesn't mean she wasn't born elsewhere in England or Wales.
John Simmons' occupation is given as comb maker.
There's a Hannah Wood aged 86 living in the house who also is from outside the County & may be her mother.

Thanks for your response Jim.
Do you mean James' birth was 1823 as there is no John on the 1841 census return I have found. (We may be looking at different records.)
My apologies, I misread county as country!
Strange coincidence! Can you tell me any more information about the father, if he is listed. I have nothing to go on with him apart from him being dead by 1905 when James was.

James was born 1823 & his father is listed as John & mother Sarah. They were living in Nova Scotia St. as they were in 1849 when Ellen was christened, this is the family you found in 1841.
Youwill have to get James' marriage cert. to verify who his father is.

Thanks very much for your help, Jim.
I know his father was John from a record of marriage, I will try to get a hold of the actual certificate and hopefully find out more about his mother/father for further research.

I don't think this one's yours,this James can be found in B'ham in 1861 & unmarried.

Hi Jim,
I know this is an old post - not been on here foe a wee while.
You mentioned that James could be found in 1861 unmarried, meaning this one maybe isn't mine. However, I have found him in 1861 with his wife and children.
James Simmons 32
Susannah Simmons 30
Susannah Simmons 6
John Simmons 4
James Simmons 2
