I was researching a friend's tree and found that on the 1881 census the dock labourer and his family were living at 5 Scale Lane in the centre of Hull. Being nearby I went to see if the house was still there. Not only is it still there but it has a blue plaque on it declaring it to be the oldest domestic building in the city, dating back to the 15th century. I suppose in 1881 it was just an old house. Just shows the value of checking out the addresses of our ancestors.

Thomas Bulmar Dunwell, Hairdresser, 19 Scale Lane, 1851, I was hoping the building was still standing, no such luck.
Yet I was delighted to see numbers 1 & 2 Bishop Lane, have survived the test of time my GGGrandfather William Dunwell lived in them both for some time. 2 Bishop Lane being the Queens Coffee House from about 1851 to 1870.
He also had the Gate, Lr union St. 1840.
The Grapes, Fawcett St. 1842.
The Neptune 3 Chapel Lane, 1846.
Any Dunwell's in the Hull area please get in touch.

Hi Sutton Trust,
I've found this link on the Hullweb site that has an excellent feature on 5 Scale Lane.
Enjoy.

Yes, thanks, Ian, I found that some time ago. The Hullwebs site has great potential but seems to be on hold - you can't contact them. Pity.
