Would anyone know where I might get info on this man and his family,In Griffiths valuations he was renting his house from Rev Dr Vavasour, yet he in turn was leasing 4 houses in Vavasour Sq to 4 other families, is there a history of Vavasour Sq anywhere that I could look him up.
Many Thanks,
Laura

not sure this helps found on google books:
The court journal: court circular & fashionable gazette, Volume 5
William Vavasour Esq. of Weston Hall in Yorkshire, who died lately at his seat, was thas last of that family. He was lineally descended from Sir John le Vavasor [sic], of Denton and ASkwith, (second son of Sir JOhn le Vavasor of Haselwood, and brother of William Lord de Vavasor, who had summons to Parliament among the Barons in the 28th Edward I. Which Barony is supposed still to exist in the descendents the daughter ahd heiress of Robert, the second Lord), who married in the thirteenth century the daughter and heir of Sir William de STopham, of Weston, Knight, since which perios Weston Hall as been in the family. The only remaining descendents in the female line of the Weston branch are the children and grandchildren of the aunt, and sister of the late Mr. Vavasour. The former, Mary Vavasour, married Captian Candler of the 10th regiment, a younger brother of the family of Candler, of Callan Castle, in Ireland, and the latter, Ellen Vavasour, became in 1787,t he wife of the Rev John Carter, by whom she had a son and a daughter.
The elder branch of the house of Vavasour became extinct in 1826, on the death of Sir Thomas Vavasour, of Haselwood, Bart. whose ancestor, Sir Mauger le Vavasor, settled at Haselwood at the conquest. He devised his estates to his cousin, the Honourable Edward Stourton, next brother of Lord Stourton who thereupon asumed the name Vavasour, and in whose person the anceint Baronetge has been renewed.

If proven correct some of the baptisms give his occupation as Agent to the City of Dublin or Agent to the City Mission which could be followed up on
The marriage states FARMER as occupation which may imply he came from outside the city originally

McCreedy's Dublin Street names (1892) mentions Vavasour Place, which appears to be an earlier name for the square - the '-sq.' and the year indicates when the change occurred.
Vavasour Place, Bath Avenue, Beggar's Bush 1846 -Sq. 1849
From Mr. W. Vavasour - called to the bar in 1775, who in 1792,
took from Lord Fitzwilliam, for 150 years, at £190 per an., the
marsh then between Beggar's Bush and Ringsend, through
which the Dodder ran to Ringsend Bridge. By a complete
double embankment of the Dodder, he reclaimed this tract
which had been inundated every tide.
The place is listed under the Ball's Bridge, Co. Dublin section of Thom's 1848, and a John Shaw is shown sharing number 6 with a Mrs. Pearson - no occupation shown for John.

Are you aware there is a Shaws Lane just off Bath Avenue. I think it runs along the back gardens
of some of the houses on Vavasour Sq. If you google Shaws Lane it comes up.

Your reference to John Shaw states dates to what do these refer?
If my referencing John's marriage to Susanna Stackpoole is correct; John had died by 1901 as there is a Susanna Shaw listed on the census
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003707877/
with her son John 44 => born c1857 and daughter Leonie 30=> born c1871 (name ties in with Susanna's middle name)
This also would imply the family moved about as John was born in Co. Down and Leonie in Co. Galway

Based on Thom's entries - John Shaw disappears from the Vavasour Sq. address sometime between 1863 and 1868

More of interest on John's daughter Selina

Thank you all for your hard work on my behalf,
It looks like MaryAnn fellowes is his first wifes name, Selina is their daughter, but cant find anything on the other children.
John married susannah but she must have died prior to 1862 because he married his third wife at this time.
John and susannah had a son Samuel born c 1853 but cant find his birth cert.
John left Vavasour Square when he married his third wife in 1862.
Where would i get to see the city mission records and what are these.
Would there be a way to trace Mrs Pearson of 1848? another shaw family who might be connected have a margaret pearson as their mother.
Again many thanks I greatly appreciate it!!!

There will be no birth certificate for a birth pre-1863
However Samuel Stackpoole Shaw of Vavasone Square was baptised in Donnybrook CoI Church on May 28 1854; son of John and Susanna Shaw; John's occupation gentleman

thank you for finding sams birth for me, Ive been looking for it for years, were there any other children do you know? Is there a graveyard for the church maybe I could look for a tombstone?
Sorry for all the questions.

This is a link to the CoI diocese website with details of the current rector in Donnybrook
http://www.ireland.anglican.org/information/dioceses/parish/14450
It is a large church on a busy corner near the RDS (Royal Dublin Society) Grounds
I don't believe there is a churchyard alongside; there is an old cemetery in the centre of Donnybrook if I remember correctly.

Thanks again,
Letter making its way to Donnybrook!

Hi all,
Might there be a connection to W D Vavasour, a cracking good Cricketer for Co Galway and Phoenix in the 1870's. I've been trying to trace WDV, but with little luck...
Many thanks.
