Looking for any information on my Grandmother Ellen Connolly nee O'Neil/Batt, she married my Grandfather John Connolly in Cork City in 1924 ish, I think she died in 1920/30s, my father, their son came to England in 1947. The O'Neils originated from Evergreen street, same as the Connolly's. thanks to all for your time. John Connolly.

Is this her on the 1911 census? http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Cork_No__5_Urban__part_of_/Evergreen_Street__part_of_/398482/
More questions... If not, can you provide an approx date of birth? Where does the name Batt fit in? Where did she die?

Hi Sonas, Yes this is my Grandmother as a youth, I beleive her Mother must have married again to a Michael Batt, I know Gran married my Grandfather in 1923/4, Dad was born in 1924 and I believe they had a daughter shortly afterwards (Cathleen?) who died young, and again I beleive Gran died around the same time allthough I have no proof of this. Dad rarely spoke of his early life, I do know that my Grandfather is buried in St Joseph's Cemetery in the plot owned by Michael Batt. but sadly I know nothing of my Gran. thank you for your interest. John.

There are matching marriage references on FamilySearch for a Nellie O'Neill and John Connolly in Cork, 1922 - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYNR-F5S.
The O'Neill family on the 1901 census - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Cork_Urban_No__5/Evergreen_Street__part_/1114444/
The mother-in-law of the head of household is Catherine Bath (Batt). On FamilySearch there are matching marriage references for a Catherine Batt and Michael O'Neill in 1882. Are you sure about your great-grandmother marrying twice? From looking at the above, I would take it that your great-grandmother's maiden name was Catherine Batt and maybe the cemetery plot in St Joseph's was bought by her father.
I only had a quick look but I don't see any great matches for your grandmother dying in the 1920s/30s on FamilySearch. Have you checked the burial records for St Joseph's to ascertain if there is a record for your grandmother? You should be able to fill in a lot of detail about the O'Neills using Family Search.

The closest match for a death that I can see for Ellen Connolly is 1927 although the estimated date of birth is some years out - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTJJ-VM8. The death of an infant named Kathleen Connolly is also registered in 1927 though so it might be worth checking these out.

Sonas, Thank you so much, yes I did get the 'Batt' relationship wrong, The confusion arose because I know my Grandfather, John Connolly is in the Grave owned by Michael Batt, I assumed that this was his wife Ellen's Step Father, it's now more logical that Michael Batt was Ellens Grandfather, I have emailed Cork city Archives to check out St Joseph's cemetery. I am very gratefull to you for your speedy and much yearned for information, I can't find any links on the Connolly side of the family, so your help has been invaluable. thank you. regards, John
-
You mention that the Connollys were from Evergreen St as well but the nearest Connollys I can see on the census is a family on Friars St (unless there is a spelling problem with the name Connolly on the census??)
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Cork_No__5_Urban__part_of_/Friars_Street/398651/
If you don't know if this is the right family, best way to check would be to order the 1922 marriage cert for John Connolly/Ellen O'Neill and check his father's details.
Re the Timothy Connolly and his wife Elizabeth, they say in 1911 that they've been married for 33 years. There is a marriage which might match on www.irishgenealogy.ie - http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/61bd440022128
I don't know if the O'Brien name rings any bells for you.

I've been to St Josephs before and they were helpful in finding out who was in what grave, we were also in the Cork Archives and they didn't have St Josephs records, and they thought that the old records were with the caretaker still...
By the way an Aunt of mine through marriage has the surname Batt and they came from the southside of Cork City, wonder if they are related.....
-
Hi Loudam, a very helpfull guy called Timmy from the Archives 'found' my Grandfather in St Joseph's, so they must have some contacts. There doesn't appear to be many 'Batts' (pardon the pun, Endangered Species)
in Cork so it is a possibility that they were related, I'm still digging for more info. thank you for your interest, Regards John.

Hi again Sonas, I have their Marriage certificate, It states that Grandad resided at 71 Evergreen Street, and Grandma at 47 Evergreen Street this was of course in 1922, Grandad had served 21 years in the Army, his Army records state that his next of kin was his Mother Ann of 171 Evergreen Street? To confuse things more Grandma 's Father on the Marriage Certificate is given as Michael Batt Deceased? allthough she is named as Nelly O'Neill? Thanks once again. John.

According for census your grandmothers "parents" got married in about 1883, there is a death record for a Michael Batt for 1885 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FT7R-96K I've realised through searching for my own families that the dates are flexible...
I'll ask my aunt about her own "batts" I know she said she would like to trace her own family too..
Maybe the 71 versus 171 could be a 1 wrongly added or that there were more houses added and numbers changed in time..
-
Just doing a bit of looking and in 1945 Evergreen Street only went up to 82, there's a J Connolly listed for 71 on the 1945 Guys Almanac http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/places/streetandtradedirectories/1945guyscitycountyalmanacanddirectory/1945pages390-493/Guys%20Cork%20Almanac%201945_p476-487.pdf

There are matching references on FamilySearch for a Catherine Batt marrying a Michael O'Neill in Cork in 1882 which is well before the 1885 death of Michael Batt. I wonder if the reference on the 1922 marriage cert might just be an error with the father's first name being put together with the mother's maiden name. Perhaps contacting the South Parish and asking them to check their marriage records might help. Equally, you could look for a birth cert / baptism record for your grandmother to clarify.
I'm not sure what information you are hoping to find out about John Connolly... Is his father's name on the marriage cert? Is his date of birth / age on his service record? There is an Anne Connelly listed on the 1911 census on Evergreen St.
-
Hi Sonas, I agree I need my Grandmothers Birth Certificate to claryfy her Fathers name, as for the info I am looking for on my Grandfathers side, is on his Fathero or Mother, all I know is that his name was James and he married Ann Hennerty I have this info from the individual printouts from South Parish records on the baptism record of my Grandfather John, and his brother's James and Denis James, the latter of whom I think died in his first year! I have no dates of birth or places for my Great Grandparents?. Regards John.
-
DO you know who the J Connolly is on the 1945 Guys Almanac? Is it your Grandfather? Have you managed to get a rough idea when they got married??
This looks like a good match of course depending on when you think they may have gotten married
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/b74bb50022471
-
I wonder is this Michael Batt's marriage http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/b6ec7e0017339
Catherine O Neill would have been born about 1857
-
Hi Loudham, Yes the J Connolly must be my grandfather I know he lived alone on Evergreen street, he married my Grandmother in 1922. The Connolly/Hennerty wedding you have found looks a good match as their 3 children were born from 1881, The Michael Batt marriage also looks right. I cannot thank you enough for your help I am thrilled. regards John.
-
If you look at the Connolly Hennerty marriage it gives the Fathers name as James Connolly, Bantry and Denis Hennerty of some road think it looks like Douglas road....
Have you been in to see the records in South parish church I need to go in myself too at some stage...
-
Hi again Loudam, yes I did go to South Parish and they were very helpful, however this was about 15 years ago and I arranged the visit before coming to Cork, an assistant had looked up the info and printed it off for me. With the excellent help I have had from you and ' Sonas' I am reeling with fresh enthusiasm, Thanks. John
-
That's grand! They open on saturdays from 10:30 to 1 to the public and I have to go there, loads of potential family members that could have been married or baptised there!!
Theres nothing like a fresh wave of interest in the family research!!
I know i've emailed a few of the churches in Cork and they've been helpful if I've given dates and names to them...
-
Hi again! I'm wondering how you've gotten on with your family, I was talking to my aunt at the weekend and she's going to try to trace her own Batt's, I also came across a family tree that looks to be related to yours on Ancestry you may have seen it already though http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/7944865/family/familyview
-
On looking again I see that it is the right family, the O Neil side because the Address is 47 Evergreen street
-
Hi Loudam, Nice to hear from you again, firstly the 'Tree' on Ancestry is my brothers so yes they are alike. I wish your Aunt good luck in her search because as we know its quite a minefield. My search for the Connollys took me back to 1800 Bantry, The Michael Batt was my Grandmother Ellen's (Connolly/O'Neill) Grandfather who married Cathrine Desmond in 1849, their daughter Cathrine marrying Michael O'Neill. Interestingly my Grandfather is in the Family grave of Michael Batt in St Josephs as is Ellen. Two questions I would like help with is. 1) Grandmother died in the 'Union Hospital', is this still in use and do they have Medical records? as on her Grave record it states her cause of death as 'Natural' yet her age of 24 suggests otherwise and
2) Grandfather died in the 'County Home', what is this? Thanks again for all your help in the past and 'Good Hunting'. Regards John.
-
Hi again
From this info here http://www.corkarchives.ie/genealogy/sourcesinthearchives/ it would seem that the Union Hospital, and County Home are the same place and it would now be St Finbarrs hospital...
Have you tried to get your Grandmothers death cert?? I've gotten some little gems of info from death certs..
My aunt is going to try and see where her batts come from which as you say can be interesting at times!!
-
Hi. I've just come across this thread from 2012. My grandmother was Kitty O'Neil from 71 Evergreen Street. Her father was Timothy O'Neil married to Catherine Bath/Batt. He's buried in St Josephs. His sister was Ellen. Would be delighted to catch up to discuss our shared history!
-
Apologies, Kitty's father was Timothy O'Neil, whose father Michael was married to Catherine Bath/Batt
