Here is what I know. Born in UK guessing around 1867. Died in Australia before 1907. One child that we know of Hannah Louisa Willcox born 1887 Australia. Worked in Queen Victoria's household as a maid before coming to Australia. Can't seem to find her immigration records, or death certificate. Any help would be appreciated.
-
If you know Jane died in Australia, your best avenue would be to trace her death record. If she died in NSW or Victoria, you should have a good chance of tracing her origin. The death records for those 2 states have a lot of information normally.
Try posting a lookup request in the Australia board.

Hi Lin!!!,
I can't find the birth of Hannah Louisa Willcox (or Harrison) - do you know which state she was born in?
Did Jane marry Willcox - I can't find a marriage either.
Is there any more information such as Jane's parents available please?
regards,
Ros
-
Thanks Ros. That was the same problem I was coming up with. We did track down Henry Willcox with the help of RootsChat but when I sent for his death certificate it says he wasn't married so now not sure whether he married Jane and I also couldn't find Hannah's birth certificate just her marriage and death certificate. Hannah was living in NSW. That is the problem, we don't have much information only what was on Hannah's marriage certificate.
-
Hi Lin,
Is this Hannah's marriage?
Hannah D Willcox in 1907 to David E Powell in Newtown NSW? What does the marriage certificate give as her middle name?
cheers,
Ros
-
Yes that is it. Middle name on certificate is Louisa, see my previous posting Willcox/Harrison as that explains a bit more about Hannah and what we know. Thanks again.

Does Henry's death cert name all of the children in his death notices - Hannah, Emily, Thomas and Jack?
Debra :)
-
Unfortunately no, as it is marked not married across both boxes. The certificate was not much help as the informant doesn't seem to know much about him, he died in hospital and the informant wasn't a family member.

I have a marriage certificate for Hannah Louisa Willcox to David Edward Powell, at St Josephs church, Camperdown in NSW 1907. On the certificate it states that Hannah's father was Henry Willcox, painter, whereabouts unknown and her mother was Jane Harrison, deceased. Hannah was a minor, 20 years old, living at Golden Grove. I have searched NSW BDM and other sites but am unable to find a birth certificate for Hannah or anything on Jane Harrison or Henry Willcox. Could anyone advise where to next. Thanks
How do you know Jane was born in England?
Have you considered that Jane may be her 2nd given name?
Where did you get the information she worked in the royal household?
Could you please type up ALL the information on the marriage and death certificates. So often it is the small snippets of information that help.

The little information that we have on Jane has been handed down word of mouth apparently there was a bible that was lost. Thanks.
-
At the start of this thread you asked for information about Jane Harrison. Do you have her death certificate, or know which state she was living in? That is probably the best option for clues as to her UK origins. The one other possibility is newspaper obituaries, if you know where she lived, and/or roughly when she died.

Thanks I will keep trying. I am assuming she lived around Sydney as her daughter was 20 when she married in 1907, mother deceased, and her husbands family lived around there. Have checked the Sands directory and in 1884, Willcox Henry, painter lived at Waterloo, but still can't find anything on Jane Harrison.
-
I think its time to think outside the square, as they say. So far it seems you are relying on Hannah's marriage certificte for data to go further. Do you have Hannah's death certificate? This should point you in the direction of her birth, and then hopefully a birth certificate.
Just checked the NSW indexes, and the only Hannah Louisa Powell in the deaths is in 1962, with father listed as William. Did she die in NSW?
-
Looking at the Death notices for Henry Wilcox. I wondered why there are 2 notices each with 2 children mentioned.
Could it be that Emily Lucas and Thomas Wilcox are from one "wife"
and Hannah Powell and Jack Wilcox from another "wife". (probably Jane)
-
Well done tedscout! You could be onto something. That could also account for the lack of marriage record seemingly, if Henry was already married when he met Jane Harrison. Lin!!!, I don't mean to offend but it could be a possibility.
-
Yes, I had thought of that but was thinking his second wife was after Jane. I have tried to follow up on his sister to see if that lead anywhere, I think I have found her birth, marriage and death. Jack doesn't show up, but he could be John, and I have tried the other two children but nothing. The death certificate for Hannah in 1962 is our Hannah I haven't sent away for it as it has the father as William and mother unknown so I don't think it is going to be much help, if they didn't know her father was Henry. Maybe something will come up with the registry for minors.
-
You could be right Lin. I only wrote them out in order they appeared in the paper.
-
The death certificate may have the incorrect details for the parents (if it is the right Hannah), but it should give you a lead to her birthplace and a possible certificate, which should then shed light on Jane.
I think you should consider sending away for the death certificate.
-
Regarding the death notices, what struck me about the 2 separate ones for the children was that maybe they didn't know each other existed, or there had been a family split.
How are you connected to Hannah (and Jane) ? It might be worthwhile tracing other descendants of the other children. You never know what info or documentation they might have.
-
Thanks for all your help everyone I really appreciate the input. I will consider sending for the death certificate. I don't think the two families new of each other, we didn't even know Hannah had a brother so interesting.
-
Hi
on the death notice for Henry Willcox the word father may be a misprint.
maybe it should be brother of Emily Lucas and Thomas Wilcox.
NSW Emily Willcox born 1875 Redfern father John mother Louisa, Thomas E born 1865.
I have had a death notice state wife when it should have been mother ( it was not corrected)

Hi Lin,
Re Jane,
Have you confirmed that Jane worked in Queen Victoria's household as a maid before coming to Australia? Do you have Jane on any UK census records .... this will help determine when she came to Australia.
Is it possible that Jane returned to England after Hannah was born, leaving Hannah in NSW, perhaps fostered out to a family? Have you looked for Jane as an incoming passenger returning to the UK?
Do you have any knowledge as to Jane's parents names please ....
Cheers, JM

It has only been passed down verbally that she worked in the household. Don't have anything on her except her name and that she was deceased when Hannah married in 1907. There have been a few Jane Harrison coming into Australia, but can't confirm any with so little information . I have found some on the English census but with so little information it is just guess work. Interestingly there is a Jane Harrison that shows up on NSW Registers for the Randwick Asylum for destitute children but I can't access the record, thought it might have something to do with Hannah. Thanks

The NSW State Records Office has the Child Welfare, Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children 1852-1915 records. The index is online and you can order copy of the file from that index. Here is the link http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/searchform.aspx?id=26
I doubt that the file will be of any assistance though. You see, the index shows that the file for Jane Harrison is for a six year old lass who was admitted on 19 Feb 1915.
I am a tad NSW centric and I think of Harrison as one of the popular surnames in NSW. There were several instances of HARRISON in the Golden Grove district of Darlington and Chippendale (inner west suburbs of Sydney) in the 1880s and up to around 1900.
If you were able to provide the names of Jane's parents I could try to find out more details.
Do you have the names of the witnesses for Hannah's marriage? Please type up all the information from the marriage certificate as there can often be clues in those details.
Cheers, JM
-
Thanks, definitely not my Jane Harrison. The witnesses were J.E. Doyle and Ruby Coombes. Usual occupation of Hannah Domestic Duties. Usual place of residence. Waverley (Sydney). Birth place Golden Grove. Spinster aged 20. Father Henry Willcox, Painter. Mother Jane Harrison, deceased. Married 17th August,1907 at St Josephs Church, Camperdown.
At the time of Hannah's birth I have Henry Wilcox, painter, residing at Little Wilson St Redfern and his family living at Bullanaming St Redfern, in 1934 renamed Renwick St. His family still in Bullanaming St in1897. Henry's mother died in 1900 in Bullanaming St. Possible birth date for Hannah is 26/1/1888 but not confirmed.
-
Hi,
You have likely date of birth for Hannah Louisa as 26 Jan 1888, and place as Golden Grove. The likely NSW BDM registration district could well be REDFERN. So, I notice there is the following birth registration indexed at NSW BDM online
Louisa M WILLIS, with parents as William and Jane E. It was registered at Redfern in 1888. # 11240. I am aware of many mistranscribed entries in that online index. It was prepared from the handwritten ledgers many decades later. Perhaps Willis is a mis-reading of the surname.
Cheers, JM Further poststo come, just typing up some Electoral Roll information and some Sands Directory info

Thank you for all the effort you have put in on this :) :) :) :). The Wilcox Louisa M I am pretty sure is the sister of Henry as she is mentioned in Henry's mums death notice 13/6/1900, also the late residence of Louisa Jemima (Henry's mum) is 146 Bullanaming St, Thomas is also a brother. In 1876-1888 there is a John Wilcox,Wilcocks first a glazier then painter living in Bullanaming St, maybe Henry's father. Thank you, without your help I wouldn't have found out anything about Henry, and it could be that birth certificate as on Hannah's death certificate they have the father as William. I will let you know how I go. The Harry Wilcocks, painter that you found in the Sands.
1885 Sands - Harry WILCOCKS, painter, 29 Alfred Terrace, Wilson St, Redfern could be Henry as in 1886-1888 they have a WILCOX, Henry, painter, 29 Little Wilson St, Redfern. So if it is, I am assuming that he was there when Hannah was born. I see where the Doyle on the wedding certificate could come in looking at what you have printed Hannah could have grown up with the son/brother of Michael Doyle as they lived on the same street and one of Hannah's witnesses is Doyle.
