Hi I stumbled across James Espin whilst searching for my Cunningham family (I don't know if you know more about Rebecca Orwell, daughter of Mary Espin nee Orwell or even better Rebeccas husband John Cunningham). I did notice James was from Louth at his marriage in 1805 in Thimbleby, his bride Mary Orwell had just given birth to a baby girl Rebecca in Woodhall. Obviously the Espin family (well actually Thomas) played a great part in Louth and my feeling is that the Espin family you can find in Louth may offer you answers as to where James was from. I did also notice a BB in the baptism for Rebecca and that she was obviously illegitimate, there may still be a bastardy bond that might give you information on where James was from. I also read in Thomas Espin esq. of Louth orbituary, that he was born in Holton cum Beckering near Wragby a farmer's son (and he is in that parish register). Although I could not find a birth for James in Holton cum Beckering, it would not seem impossible that the family moved to another farm in the area and that James was Thomas's brother, if not cousin?
Thomas's orbituary is on the internet

would love to hear if you know anything about John Cunningham (Rebeccas husband)
take care and good luck hunting

Hi there, yes John and Rebecca had quite a number of children, born in the Belchford region and Tattershall as far as I can see. I was looking at John to see if he connects with my Cunninghams, but so far no result (mine are from the Burgh on Bain, Binbrook and Beelsby areas). John (lived at Driby) and his brother William (moved to Well/Alford) were born at Holbeach to John and Elizabeth. These Cunninghams like my own interestingly used the alias Cunny/Coney, which has made me wonder if they are somewhat connected. There is also a Thomas?Espin Cunningham who was born I think in the 1880s I seem to recall in Tetford, where I think he was buried as a toddler, like I said I haven't looked deeply, just recall seeing something somewhere.
James Espin bachelor of the parish of Louth married Mary Orwell of this parish spinster on 15 Apr 1805 by banns at Thimbleby church (see Lincs to the past, Thimbleby marriages with banns 1754-1813 page 15 botton left) I don't know why she had the baby in Woodhall and then was of this parish at Thimbleby a few weeks later, but this does seem to be the same Mary. Rebecca Orwell was baptised on 27 Jan 1805 at St Margaret church Woodhall, the daughter of Mary Orwell her baptism entry has BB written at the end, which makes me think this may mean bastardy bond. Rebecca was baptised as Orwell, so retained the name, even though it would be highly suggestive that James Espin was her father?
I wonder if Mary Orwell was the daughter of Isaac and Esther born 1788 in Fulletby, ghosh that would make her a young mum too and she would have had a sister called Rebecca, interesting all these biblical names (Isaac, Esther, Rebecca), wonder whether there is any significance?

of the parish only means they had to be living there
for a couple of weeks to marry there.
I did look into the cunninghams & found the children
of John & Rebecca. Thomas Espin Cunningham had
a twin James Espin Cunningham. James died young.
found 8 children all together. John b abt 1797 Holbeach dist.
died 1871 Tattershall.
looked on Lincs to past for Bastardy bond - there are some-
but can't find Rebecca, but think you are right.

I found Mary Espins (Orwell)  burial online 25/12/1856
woodhall aged 73 so abt 1789 birth. she is with Goerge
her son on the 1851 as born Fulletby but again cnat find her on
LincsTTP.

I'd take issue with your arithmetic ;)

Anyway, there was one in 1786 (top right) http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/RecordDisplayTranscript.aspx?oid=524253&iid=265688

top right 14.5.1786? That would be a Mary Riggal not Orwell. Mary Orwell is on the next page left half way down, baptised 8.6.1788

This could also make her 62 years old in the 1851 census as claimed, since her birthday was most likely after the census date in 1851, so Fulletby seems to be the place and her elder sister Rebecca would give an indication why Mary's eldest daughter received that name. Bastardy Bonds sadly often haven't survived, but would be the expected thing in this situation. Yes of this parish means only a few weeks (if I'm not mistaken 21 days), still why was she of that parish when she had literally just had her baby elsewhere, where were her parents living at the time? was she staying with relatives at time of marriage or birth (one of my ancestors went on a convenient holiday to relies)? or did they find a quiet little parish to marry in? Land tax records or poor rate payments etc may help with the question of where her parents lived at the time, providing she even still lived with them

I've come across a number of Espin bits and pieces as the surname is in my direct line. It's early days in the research though some of the names posted are common to my lot so maybe a connection somewhere.

William Espin abt 1740 (died Sep 1814, Barlings), is as far back as I have got, descendants around 1800-1830 around Barlings and then some around Barton, Grimsby and Lincoln.

Just in case it's any use, William, spouse and children
