I would appreciate it if there was someone who could help me to help a friend.
We are trying to find the baptism records for Reginald George Caseley or Palmer who was born in Bracknell in 1891 (believed to be 15th August 1891). Reginald's mum lived in Cornwall and travelled to Berkshire to give birth to Reginald, she returned back to South West were she married Henry Caseley in Dawlish, Devon in 1894. Reginald's mother was Joanna/Johanna Palmer from St. Clements, Truro, Cornwall.
The family could not find Joanna on the 1891 and they believe that she was staying with an unknown member of the family.
kind regards
Steve

Hi Steve
Trying to identify the correct Palmer family, but I can't find Joanna/Johanna in 1881 either. Do you have a reference for this?

I think your friend might have got in a muddle with this - maybe ::)
There is a baptism for a Reginald George Palmer
parents George (a Gilder) & Joanna
30 Mar 1892
Saint John the Evangelist, Hammersmith
The original image shows date of birth as
15 August 1891
and the address as
The Brackwells, East Hampstead

To be fair it DOES say Bracknell on the 1901 census!
RG13, 2049, 125, 10
5 Queen Street, East Dawlish
Caseley, Henry Head M 39 General Labourer b Dawlish
Caseley, Johanna Wife F 26 b Merther, Cornwall
Caseley, Reginald Son M 9 b Bracknell, Berkshire
Caseley, Henry Son M 6 b Dawlish
That would put Johanna's age at 16 when she gave birth to Reginald! :o
No wonder she's hiding in 1881!

Interesting one this, isn't it?

Oops! Changed my last post to say 1901! :-[
In the later census, Reginald is stated to be born in the same town as his father ???

Easthampstead is part of modern Bracknell. Up to 1852 Bracknell Street, as it was then called, was a very small village in the parish of Easthampstead. In 1852 it became a parish in its own right. When the railway came the station was at Bracknell and as a result it developed to become the larger village. There were ribbon developments of houses along the road between Easthampstead and Bracknell. Modern Bracknell resulted from the huge new town development in the 1970s.

Thanks you all for you response to this, I have passed the details onto my friend who has instructed her brother to go back into the attic and go through the records he has.
As soon as this has been done I update this posting.

Thanks behindthefrogs and sorry everyone - that was me being careless! Because the baptism was in Hammersmith, I asumed that the birth was Hampstead in London. ::)
Really, I'm old enough to know better :o ::)
It still doesn't explain who George Palmer the Gilder is though??

It has not been possible to find the birth certificate, the GRO suggested that as they could not locate the registration that it was possible that it was never recorded. The family were hoping that the baptism could be found which might reveal the birth father's, but it suspected that if the baptism was found it would only record the mothers name.
Linda are you saying that the two dates you found are not linked?

is it possible the age is mistranscribed in 1901?
On 1871 there's a Joanna Palmer b Merther, Cornwall in 1865. Daughter of Francis as woodman b St Cleemnts anD Elizabeth a dressmaker of Merther
This would make her much nearer her husband's age
[Apologies in advance if I spell Merther wrong at points - being Welsh my mind types Merthyr]

She's still at home in 1881, transcribed on Ancestry as SUanna. Not found her yet on 1891

Hi Steve
I can't put an image on this thread, so I've put it here.

This is the original for the baptism I referred to in Reply #2. There is no header for the left hand column, but I would assume it's the birth date

I have passed on the information and the family are very grateful and pleased with what you have found for them.
It has been accepted that they may never find out why Joanna went to Berkshire to have Reginald, who the birth father was and who she was staying with during her pregnancy. Unfortunately as a result of Joanna not being located on the 1891 census they may never find this out.
This topic is now complete
Kind regards
Steve
