I am looking for the marriage of Edward John Wilson b. abt 1867 in Birkenhead to Sarah (surname unknown) b. abt 1866 in Birkenhead. I believe they were married about 1885.
In 1881 Edward was definitely in Birkenhead. I don't know where Sarah was as I don't know her surname. In 1891 the couple were living in Horwich.
I have used all the usual online searches, but can't seem to find a record of their marriage.
Can anyone help please?

On the 1911 census - how many years does it show them married?
Sarah was b Liverpool although first child aged 4 was b Birkenhead
I would recommend buying a copy of one of their childrens birth certs to get Sarah's maiden name

Hi Carole
The 1911 census shows them married 26 years. They're living in St Leonard's Street, Victoria, Co Down, Ireland. They moved there between 1899 and 1900.
One of their children has Oakes as a middle name, which may provide a clue. However, in 1882 they would have been 15 and 16. Not impossible but still quite young.
I am trying to avoid buying birth certificates until I've exhausted all the online possibilities as I am researching for a friend.

George Oakes Wilson birth registered in Barrow in Furness in 1898 mothers maiden name Lucas.
See www.cumbriabmd.org.uk
The GRO has him registered in the March Quarter 1899 ???
This would match his age on the 1911 Irish Census.
There is also a matching Emily on the same site in 1897.

Sounds like a match to me. I was looking for marriages of Edward Wilsons to Sarahs, as he gives his first name everywhere else, but the info you've given me makes me think he married in the name of John Wilson, not Edward.
Thank you all very much.
