Title: Converting a GFT or GEDCOM to '5.5 or higher'
Post by: David in Devon on Wednesday 25 January 12 15:57 GMT (UK)
Does anyone know how?

I've got my tree on a .GFT file from Family Tree v2.0a and i've saved it as a GEDCOM.  Now the new app won't read it because it's not a high enough version.

Can anyone help me out?

PM me and i'll send it over.

Thanks

David

Hi,

I have the same problem as David and have two trees from Family Tree v2.0a, which I did some research on and found I needed to save them as gedcom files in order to open with Family Tree Maker 2012. But when I try and open them I get an error message saying they need to be version 5.5 or higher.

Could anyone help me out as well?

I can send the files over by pm

Many thanks
Emma

Emma,

You will need to make a minimum of 3 posts before you can use the pm feature. And then you will have to ask for the kind soul's email address because (unless I am mistaken) files cannot be attached to pms

cheers, falcybe (and welcome to RC :-) )

Ok, sorry I didn't know what the rules were. I've searched online for absolutely ages for a solution to my problem and I was so pleased to see someone else had had the same issue and got it fixed, that I wrote this I guess without fully understanding the rules or the way personal messaging works as I'm new.

That's a real shame, back to the drawing board I guess :-(

It's not a problem .... 1 more post and you are at the "magic number" for the PM system BUT if you contact me directly via the email address (little envelope icon) under my avatar I'll see what I can do.

Just reply to this post (say something like "hello"  ;D ).
That will be your third posting and the personal message facility for you will free up.

Thanks for the offer of help, I have now sorted it out  :o  I exported the gedcom file to Ancestry.co.uk (I have 6 months free access with my new software) and it let me do it and then to export the gedcom file to my new software  :o   It must have saved it as a compatible file so it was easy in the end.

Thank you for your offer of help though

Regards
Carol

Hi Ray,

Any chance you could help another one out with the .gft coversion? My Grandpa is trying to get the old information out but he lost the original install disc and has been trying to find the old software on eBay. I'd rather get the file into a widely used format and download him some newer updated software.

Thanks,
Nick

Ray, the conversion worked perfectly. I can't thank you enough. The csv file is extremley useful too for viewing the information in excel. I have tried the GED in 3 programs and they all work great.

Thanks again and Happy New Year!!

Hallo Ray,

My uncle had started to build our family tree about a decade ago and had created a file with an extension “.gft”.

Is it possible to help me convert it? I will be grateful for any help you can provide.

Hi Costis,

Welcome to Rootschat!

You need to send me the file via email and in order to exchange email addresses we need to do that via PM [ personal message ] because Rootschat do not allow personal details to be publicly listed.

As a new Rootschatter, you need to make 2 more postings before the PM system opens up for you.
[ eg post any query you may have about your own tree info or just say hello - twice   ;D ]

Ray

Hi Ray,

My father is using an old genealogy program running only under XP.

So it seems you could convert the GFT file into up-to-date  GEDCOM format.

Thanks in advance.

Hi dom107

. . . . .  and welcome to Rootschat.

I am willing to give it a go, however no guarantees, etc...

We would need to make/continue contact via email in order to keep your data secure.

As you are a new Rootschatter you would need to make another couple of posts before the Personal Message (pm) system opens up to you.
You would then need to send me your email address via personal message (pm).

Please confirm what program and version he has running on XP? (That;s the first of the 2 posts)

Ray

Hello,

I tested in Family tree and Heridis demo: It's working!
My father was quite pleased!

Thanks a lot for all your magic!

Well I may be the latest person to ask the generous Ray to help with gft files. I've scoured the Internet and Ray seems to be the only person who can do the conversion! I'm going to make three posts then send a message, hoping Ray is still using the site and helping people out.

Thanks Ray, I appreciate your time and efforts :) I'm going to see if the super old version of the software my MiL uses can be installed on an old PC I have as well, just as an experiment... if we can find the software and the computer.

Thanks Ray, much appreciated! You got the files up to GEDCOM 4.0 format, which family tree maker 2014 doesn't support, but you can import them into a free ancestry.co.uk account and export them as version 5.5 as the program needs. So one more step and it'll be done :)

Apparently there's another way to do it, ancestry.co.uk told me about it. Details here (http://ancestryuk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3673), in case it helps anyone in future. I might give it a shot out of interest. Basically you use Family Tree Maker 2005 SE free trial to do the conversion.

Thanks again :)

Hi Tim,

Duh! Sent you the half-finished folder, by mistake.

Just import the ged_4 files into (free and v.good) Legacy8 and export as ged_5.5.1
Or keep them in Legacy8?

We just got my mother in law Family Tree Maker 2014, from the ancestry crowd. I'll import into their online service and output as 5.5. It'll only take a few minutes, thanks again :)
