Title: PITMAN AND WALSH
Post by: mandyric on Tuesday 24 January 12 16:45 GMT (UK)
I have just started to research my mother-in-law's family tree.  Her father was William Pitman (date of birth unknown) and her mother was Ellen Walsh (born in 1905), both from Wexford.  They married Jul - Sept 1923 in Wexford.

I have found lots of children but now realise that Pitmans often married Walshs so they won't all be mine.

My Pitmans had children in Wexford from 1928 until around 1935 when they moved to Surrey.

Can anyone help me shed any light on whether i am searching for a needle in a haystack?

what are you searching for - ancestors, or siblings of your mother-in-law ?

Probably the place to start would be with a birth cert for her, and marriage cert for her parents to establish where in Co. Wexford the family lived. Then you could narrow down the search.

just be careful not to mention recent events - as details of living people may not be posted in topics as a security measure and to preserve privacy.

Looking for ancestors and their siblings as I already know about my mother-in-law's siblings.  Will order her parent's marriage certificate and hope it is the correct one.

What year do you class as a 'recent event'?  My mother in law is no longer alive.

we cant post details of any living people, or people that may be living. The 1928 to 1935 timeframe is a little too recent... unless you are certain.

Do you have possible marriage references for the marriage already from the BMD Index ?

Will make a note of dates but really the family I am looking for are the previous generation so date from around 1900.

Thanks I do have a reference number from Ancestry.

here are the references for that marriage :

  name: William Pitman
  registration district: Wexford
  event type: Marriage
  Quarter and year: Jul-Sep 1923
  volume : 4 / page: 399

  name: Ellen Walsh
 [same references as William]

Wexford district covers Wexford town and parts of the south-east of the county.

The cert should show current residences for William and Ellen and also details of their fathers (names and occupations) - which should help you locate the families on the 1911 and 1901 census.

there's an 11 year old William Pitman on the 1911 census in Wexford town that is worth checking - see :

  Pitman household, Bride St (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Wexford/Wexford_No__2_Urban/Bride_Street__part_of/696681/)

looks like the same family in 1901 - listed as Pithman :

  Pithman household, Barrack Street (http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Wexford/Wexford_Urban_No__2/Barrack_Street/1807447/)

Thanks so much for all your help, I'll have a look at the censuses.

I have researching my family tree and my husband's father's family tree for the past 25 years but have never touched the Irish side of his family because it was so difficult - thank goodness for the internet and helpful people.

there's been a couple of mentions of the Pitman/Pithman surname already - including possible details on William and his family - e.g.

  Pitham's of Wexford Town (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,501033.msg3578731.html#msg3578731)

William' baptism is mentioned in reply #11 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,501033.msg3793270.html#msg3793270)
Parents Paul Pittam and Anne Duggan

William Pitham married Ellen Walsh on 23rd July 1923 – entry in Rowe St church parish register below confirming Fathers’ names.

This looks like the Walsh family in the 1911 census

Ellen Walsh was born on 21st January 1905 – Rowe St Baptism entry below

Following on from the above post the Bride St parish register for the marriage of William Walsh & Ellen Tierney on 28th September 1896 provides father’s names taking the history back a further generation.
