Title: Green family, immigrants from UK
Post by: peterbaker on Tuesday 24 January 12 15:13 GMT (UK)
Harry Green was born 8 Sep 1883 in Somers Town, London. I believe I have found him in the England census of 1901, when he was an 18 year-old gunner in the Army in Woolwich. I then have a  record for him marrying Rose Beatrice Millard [b 1893 London] on 27 Dec 1913, Dunedin, then a death record for 6 Oct 1963 in Ashburton, Christchurch.
It is Harry's parents I'm researching - Henry Green born 18 Jan 1860 Kersey, Suffolk, UK and Jane Avey born 3 Dec 1850 in Mildenhall, Suffolk. I have Henry and Jane in the 1901 England census, then nothing more. I'm wondering whether they emigrated with their son Harry to NZ. Is there a passenger list index or NZ census record online that can be checked please?
Many thanks  ..  Peter

Hello Peter

Unfortunately New Zealand does not have Census records (all were destroyed) ... but we do have a number of other means by which we can locate people.

Passenger lists direct from UK to New Zealand (1890 to 1960) can be found at the "findmypast" (FindMyPast) website (free to view indexes - pay-to view records).

I can't immediately see in the passenger indexes, anything  which might be a match for the parents ??

It would be helpful for us to know the occupation of Henry GREEN (bc 1860) too, so that electoral listings can be checked.   ;)

Hi again Peter

Have checked for deaths in New Zealand for Henry GREEN (bc 1860) and wife Jane GREEN (bc 1850), and unfortunately can find nothing which is a close match to their approximate years of birth.

[The NZ Death index gives christian name(s), surname ... plus either "age at death" or (for later deaths) an actual birthdate. ]

Have now found occupation for Henry GREEN (1860) -- 1891 "carriage washer" -- 1901 "Railway carriage... " ?? (looks like "porter" ?? ).

I have Henry and Jane in the 1901 England census, then nothing more.

If you use the FindMyPast website to search the next available census return, you'll find Henry (1860) with son Henry (Harry) ... and one other   ;) ... all at West Ham. Essex.

I have been trying to locate Henrys death after the 1911 census but unfortunately there are to many Henry Green deaths in West Ham, Essex for me to identify the correct one.

I will look for Janes death between 1901 and 1911.

Quarter of Registration:  Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at death:  49

Hi bishenbertie

Mmm... I'd looked for Jane's death earlier, and the one registered at Braintree, 1901 - aged 49 (bc 1852) - seemed all that made sense.  ;)

( What was the date of the 1901 census.  ?? )

not quite sure but believe it was 31st March 1901.

1901 Census = 31 March/1 April

Hmm ... so Braintree death reg. > Jan-Feb-Mar < unlikely to be the correct Jane GREEN.

 ???

Hi guys
Thanks for all your efforts.
Lack of anything after 1901 was the reason I thought that just maybe Henry and Jane took off to NZ with their son.
Lu - perhaps you found my tree on Anc****y - Underwood/Palmer family. There are several others which have this family, but all have the same dead-end!
You mentioned that it is possible to check the NZ electoral listings. I am wondering whether the son Harry Green and wife Rose may be traceable and by some miracle Henry and Jane were living at the same place?
Cheers  ..  Peter

Hi Peter

It was the Cousins Tree from memory.   ;)

Yes, as part of determining whether Henry and Jane actually came to NZ, I'd already viewed the electoral listings for Harry (Henry) and Rose Beatrice GREEN.   From 1914 to 1963 they were living at various addresses in the Dunedin area.   But there's no sign at all of Henry snr. and Jane.

1911 should shed some further light on Henry senior's status at that time.   (Possibly he has re-married ?)   ;)

then a death record for 6 Oct 1963 in Ashburton, Christchurch.

Hello...

No actual help with your original request (sorry) but the date of death mentioned by both BDM NZ and the Ashburton cemetery website is 26 Oct 1963, not 6 Oct as you and a tree on Tribal Pages have cited. Can't access the ancestry tree mentioned so I don't know what that says but in this instance I'd trust BDM NZ.

Henry (Harry) is buried in an RSA plot at Ashburton. It might be worth comparing the Army serial number from the service records mentioned by Gortonboy (reply#1) to the plaque in Ashburton cemetery, just to make sure you've got the right man (or the right army service records).

Henry GREEN d.1963 of Ashburton seems to have been a member of the Salvation Army. It's possible that his parents were as well. I think I saw somewhere (WDYTYA?) that the Salvation Army sometimes keep BDM records. You could try googling "Salvation Army research" or similar.

There is a Rose Beatrice GREEN buried at Rangiora Cemetery. I think one of the rootschatters has a standing offer of photographing Rangiora cemetery headstones if you're interested, assuming this is the wife of Henry (Harry).

Thanks Lu & Beg for your help.
It seems most probable that Henry & Jane never emigrated to NZ.
Someone has found the England 1911 census with both Henrys living in Stratford, and no sign of Jane, so my hunting will now concentrate here.
Cheers ..  Peter
