Title: Daniel Barnwell CLELAND
Post by: Gritsgal on Sunday 22 January 12 01:00 GMT (UK)
He is my g-g grandfather. Born 1839. He was in South Carolina and was in the Civil War. I can not find anything on his parents or siblings. I'm hoping someone can share information with me.  His daughter, Clara Jane Cleland (1884) married Johnnie Peeples.  I have a possibility that he was married to a Mary Smith. Sounds like an alias doesn't it? Maybe she was running from the law  ;D.
If there is anyone with the slightest info I would be very grateful

Hi

Is this a possibility for you?

From the 1850 US census, a Barnwell Cleland (first name Daniel not listed though) born about 1836. See attachment from the census, showing mother Mary and siblings, but no father.

The only other possibility in another 1850 census was a Daniel Cleland born around 1838, but born and living in Virgina at that time. Living in Marion County. Mother Priscilla (born around 1793)? Daniel the second youngest of 8 children.

I could be way off track, but possibles?

Cheers
Caryn

The 1830 Census only gives the hed of the household, everyone else is catogarised by age group.

John Clelaud would be living in Prince Williams Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina.

Ah nuts….oh well to keep looking for Daniel then.... ???

One thing seems certain, is that Daniel did marry a Mary S Smith who was born in Jasper County. Mary’s name is listed on Clara’s death certificate.

It’s confusing that on Clara’s death certificate though that her father’s name is listed as B.R Cleland, and her birth year is given as 1882 rather than 1884. See attached.

Clara and John may have had more children, but through the 1910-1930 census records, there is Claud (1904-1919), Violet and Kenith(?).

Daniel and Mary had a daughter named Sara who never married, born in 1875 and died 5 May 1939 in Grays, Jasper. And a daughter Harriet who married H.G Smither. Harriet was born 1878 and died 1 March 1943 in Columbia, Richland.

All this doesn’t answer your question about Daniel’s siblings of course… :)

Cheers

It's D B, as in Daniel Barnwell. Don't know why so many places have it wrong. I suppose that is one reason he has been a bit difficult. His grandchildren are (*)(F) Violet (F) and Kenneth  (m). Kenneth is my grandfather

Hi

Oftentimes, names can be transcribed incorrectly due to the handwriting on the original certificates. On death certificates, the informant might not have been sure of the names and wrote them down incorrectly. You're right though - it does make it difficult.

Are you sure Clara and John didn't also have a son Claud? Or a son Claud rather than a daughter Claudia?

The death certificate clearly states male - occupation - schoolboy who died at 15 years old. Mother's maiden name Clara Cleland. Father John Peeples.

My own opinion would be that this was just an idiosyncracy regarding the name.  Viewing the census records "Daniel" would appear to be called Barnwell Cleland in 1850, 1900 and 1920 and D B in 1910. Goodness knows where Davis came from in 1860 but he also appears to be the same person you are looking for.
Noted that Barnwell was a City in Barnwell County, South Carolina but found no other references to that name.

Yes there is a Barnwell and Cleland Corners. I don't know who came first, the chicken or the egg. I'm very familiar with that area. My mother grew up there and still have many relatives. In all the years I've asked no one knows anything about him or Clara other than who they were. Someone once told me that Clara's father came from Scotland. I'm really not sure of Claude. Wonder if it could be Clyde? I really do appreciate the help, I can't thank you enough. You said the death certificate said child age 15 died? Hers? Never saw that on death certificate of someone else. I must have missed that. Will recheck

Hi Caryn_1

Just to clarify - John and Clara had a son Claud as on the 1910 Census which was the death record you looked at but the 1930 shows the family slightly mistranscribed under "Puplus" in Pocotaligo, Hampton, South Carolina. The transcription gave a son Charles aged 8 but if you look at the image it is clearly a daughter Cxxxxxx (removed the name - still living)

John P Puplus 49  and Clara Puplus 47
Kenith Puplus 18
Charles Puplus 9  (Cxxxxx on the transcription-) - removed the name - still living.

1930 - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/SPCV-TB2

1910 - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M5DZ-PJ6

Yes. Kenneth then Violet and (*). Only Aunt (*)
is alive now. I don't remember if it was you or someone else talking about Daniel Barnwell Cleland possibly having a son named Claud. He did!! I found a photo of some tombstones I took several years ago at one of the family cemeteries and I have a picture of his headstone! Go figure. I had the answer to the question right here and didn't know it. Sometimes I find I have so much that I don't know what I have or where it is. Thanks for your help. Willing to take all given.  😃
