Title: Irish regiments in India c. 1908
Post by: dillonking on Saturday 21 January 12 16:18 GMT (UK)
I have just heard that a great uncle of mine was stationed in India. He was born in 1886 in Wicklow. Does anybody know which Leinster regiments were in India around this time say from 1906 onwards if he joined at age 19-20?

Hello
Just found your post.
Leinster had two infantry regiments...
Royal Dublin Fusiliers (they recruited from Dublin,Kildare and Wicklow)
Their 1st Battalion was in India in 1914

Leinster Regiment     (they recruited from the rest of Leinster)
They also had their 1st Bn in India in 1914.

Sadly though that's not how things worked (not necessarily anyway). Born in Leinster does not automatically mean joined a Leinster regiment. Plenty of other infantry regiments, not to mention artillery, engineers, cavalry, various support corps....

Good afternoon,

If your g uncle decided to enlist of his own accord then he would probably have gone to the regt'l depot of his choice and signed on the dotted line, Dubliners or Leinsters most likely. However, if he was picked up by the recruiting party in the area at the time then as Neil says, it could have been almost any regt in the british army although the most likely would be infantry or cavalry as they were usually in the majority. If you post his name and any other details you have on him then we have the people to find him for you or give you the leads to follow up yourself.

Thank you both for your replies. Since posting I discovered that he joined the Worcester regiment and served there with them.

I think he probably served in Wiclow in Militia of some kind and then maybe he was picked to go to the Worcester regiment. As you stated he was indeed in the infantry.
