Sarah Jane Howard was baptised in St Michael's Church in Southampton on 9 July 1873 having been born on 21 June 1873. I have found the parish register entry in the new IGI online and the birth index via FreeBMD and have a copy of the birth certificate. The birth was registered by her mother Jane Howard, nee Tilley, (see posting above) and her father is recorded as William Howard a Dock Labourer.
The problem is that William apparently died shortly hereafter, so that by 22 September 1874 Jane was marrying Henry Baker in Salisbury - where they both originated. I know that this is not a case of mistaken identify since her daughter Sarah Jane, was subsequently known by the surname "Howard Baker" until her own marriage.
I can find no other definitive trace of William Howard or his death, partly because the name is so common that there are too many possibilities to choose from. I'm wondering whether the original Parish Register entry has anything in the margin or elsewhere to throw any further light on any of the above.
Would be very grateful if someone could do the lookup for me or make other suggestions for how I locate William and/or his death...

Hi there, had a check of the register today, you have all the information there is
Sarah Jane
born 21 June 1873, Baptism 9 July 1873
Parents William & Jane Howard,12 West Street, Labourer
I also checked for burials for William Howard up to 1875 but nothing for St Michael's I'm afraid.
I will check at Archive later in the week to see if he's in any other parish in Southampton for that time.

Kyrenia,
Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to check out these records. It was a long shot but the only avenue I could think of to get a handle on William after yet another day's fruitless research recently.
Jane herself came from Salisbury, so it's not obvious to me whether William is more likely to come from there or from Southampton so thanks for offering to do the further lookups.
Regards,
Richard

Hello Richard,
Sorry I've had no luck with any records at the archives for either a burial for William Howard or his marriage to Jane in Southampton.
Sorry I'm not more help,
