Title: Kerr ( Carr) family of Crosscanonby
Post by: stoop on Friday 20 January 12 16:30 GMT (UK)
I am researching the family of Robert Kerr and Nancy Porteous who married in Crosscanonby in 1796 and had a number of children most of them in Crosscanonby, they were

James b. 4/6/1797 Crosscanonby

Martha b. 23/12/1798

Jane b. 28/12/1800

John b. 30/3/1804

Ealinor b. 13/8/1809

William b. 20/1/1806

Rachel b.17/1/1813

Martha married Henry Hesket in 1817 Crosscanonby and had a number of children

but I have not been able to trace any one else, it is especially difficult not knowing the area in the 1841 census Isee that Ealinor is livin with her sister Martha.

Can anyone help please thanking you stoop.

Hi,
Is this the Crosscanonby Near Maryport in Cumbria?
If so have you any Surnames of the people the children may have  married?

Hi lizdb, thanks for your information about William I look at the census for 61 and 71 and try to identify his wife and any children he may have had.

Thanks to you tibia as yet I do not have any surnames, but yes it is the Crosscanonby that is near Maryport.

Thanks stoop.

There was a William Carr married an Agnes McKensie in Crosscanonby in 1856.
Also I found Martha and Henry Hesket living in Allerby with their seven children, in the 1841 census. Allerby is about 1 mile away from my house and Crosscanonby is probably 3 miles away.

Thank you very much Carol, it could be that it was my William that you are referring to. Can you tell me how many churches there are in the area around Crosscanonby where my ancestors might be buried ? Do you know if I could get hold of m.i.s for likely churches. Regards stoop.

There is a lovely church in Crosscanonby, one in Hayton which is about 4/5 miles away, also a couple in Dearham which is not too far away, not sure about records possibly in archives at Whitehaven. If you have any ancestors buried at Crosscanonby I would be more than happy to take some photo's for you.

On family search I have found a Robert Carr buried at Crosscannonby 11th oct 1834 and a Nancy Carr buried 28th aug 1836, possibilities?
Also on family search it lists baptisms of the children you listed plus a Sarah but the parents of some of them are Robert and Nancy and others are down as being children of Robert and Ann. Is Ann & Nancy the same person?
I also found a William Carr baptised 18th may 1834, only mother listed as Eleanor, and a Robert Carr was born with only mother listed as Sarah on 15th april 1832, both at Crosscannonby.

Hi Carol, excellent news, I am confident that it is Robert and the Nancy I have been seeking. I have ordered a m.i. booklet of Crosscanonby and trust that the references will confirm their identity. The information you have given me looks most promising. I would appreciate photoraphs of Crosscanonby church and relevant gravestones. Thanks again Carol. stoop.

Went to Crosscannonby church this afternoon. Bad news - could not find any graves for Robert or Nancy infact could not find any Carr's at all. A lot of the gravestones for that era are now pretty much unreadable, there are also parts with no gravestones at all, some are propped up against the back wall but no joy there either. I think will need grave plot numbers any then have another look.
The church is St John the Evangelist church. I took pictures of it but there are some very good ones on the net. The vicar is the Reverend Mary Day.

Thanks Carol ,it is very disappointing but not all is lost, I am trying to acqure a booklet containing m.i.s. of Crosscanonby church if there are records of people buried there. The search continues for the family of Robert and Nancy, presumably they left the area when marrying having children and eventually dying. Regards stoop(Roger).

The distinctions between Crosscanonby are/were somewhat blurred ... Maryport was a Chapelry within the parish of Crosscanonby http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CUL/Maryport/index.html so in many ways the tail wagged the dog.  In censuses, you will see Maryport entered as being part of Crosscanonby.

I had ancestors who both lived in Maryport as did the vicar, but they married in the parish of Crosscanonby. :)

Hi Geoff, to an outsider it is confusing and leads to me to conclude that I am best aided by local people with a particular interest in family histories. thanking you stoop.

Hi,
That is bad luck, although, lots of people in that era had no grave-stone.I don't know how far back the church records go on burials, but it's worth asking.
I just had a thought,I wonder if any of them were burried a Allonby. That's only a couple of miles from Crosscanonby on the Solway Firth..
I love that area,I used to spend a lot of time up there.
Anyhow, best of luck and please letme know how you get on.

Hi Tibia, I will purchase those monumental inscription booklets that relate to the Crosscanonby parish that have been published. Further to that Iam going to refer to the free Mormon family research site and try to plot the distribution of Kerr(Carr) families throughout the area. I would appreciate any advice regarding a better plan of action ,thanking you stoop.

I have been in touch with Rev Mary Day vicar of the church, she says there are a few records kept at the church, she says if I ring her and arrange a mutual agreeable time she will meet me at the church to let me have a look.
Very nice of her.
Unfortunately I work all day tomorrow but will try and ring her on wednesday and arrange something.

Carol, I do appreciate the time and effort you are giving to help me research my Kerr(Carr) ancestors. My  Kerr ancestors were living predominantly in Dumfriesshire and Kircudbrightshire and having been born and raised in Dumfries know the geography of the parishes and churchyards. There is also such a contrast between delving into Scottish and English records, I have a lot to learn regarding navigating through English records. Good luck when you are able to visit the vicar. Regards stoop.
