Looking for marriage and death of William John Callaghan.
William John Callaghan was born 1880 at Kupunda South Australia.
2nd son of James Callaghan and Mary Jane Fudge.
William John Callaghan was with the "Fourth Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse' going to the Boer War in 1902. His address at enlistment was Kapunda South Australia.
Any assistance appreciated.
Thank you Rainy.

There is a criminal record for him from1905, stating that he was born 21st May 1879 in the Colony??.
He was living in Kapunda.
I have had a look for his birth with the parents you mention, but he is elusive.
Regards
Malky

There are a couple of items involving a WILLIAM JOHN CALLAGHAN relating to the stealing of cheque at Broken Hill in 1905.
It may be your chap :-\

Are you wanting to account for a possible marriage?
Or do you have reason to believe that he did marry.....eg...he is named as "father of"..."husband of" etc.
-
Thank you all for trying to find our elusive William John Callaghan.
Thank you re stealing cheque at Broken Hill. Yes that is our man by what is given in Newspaper article.
I just presumed he would marry, have looked at NSW Records. but nothing seemed to connect when looking at deaths etc. But then of course i can miss some thing as well.
The Broken Hill part does add up.
As Edward James Callaghan in NZ was known as 'Brokie".
My understanding would be because he had been at Broken Hill before coming to NZ.
Sometime before he married in 1903.
I have been looking for William John Callaghan for some time, but just hit brick walls.
Always open to suggestions or advice.
Many thanks.

I'm sorry, but I don't know who EDWARD JAMES CALLAGHAN is.

Sorry Sue.
Edward James Callaghan is William John Callaghan's elder brother.
My husband's g.grandfather.
There were 4 children in the Callaghan part of the family.
Edward, William, Joseph and Lilian.
Edward, Joseph and Lilian all came to New Zealand.
But can not find any record of William also coming to NZ.
Thanks rainy

Hi Rainy, Have you considered a name change of sorts?
There is a marriage in Broken Hill 1905 Of a John Callaghan to a Laura Thompson Ref 940/1905
Then a death at Bombala NSW for a John Callaghan with parents james and Mary in 1907. Ref 12879/1907
??? ???

Thanks Neil, no i hadn't thought of looking for a John Callaghan.
That is worth taking note of. And is a real possibility.
Thank you very much. :)
Guess only way of knowing is death certificate.
If details given are correct on death cert.
Always welcome advice and suggestions.
Many thanks.

I only suggest it as a possible, a Laura Callahan married at Blayney in 1912 ref
5132/1912
There is a notable mention in that marriage of John callaghan because there are two both same year, one at BH and one at Dubbo ???
I have no idea why.

Hi Neil, yea have just been looking at NSW Records and saw where Laura thompson had two different numbers and places.
Our research sure makes us think in all ways, with these twists and turns.
I wonder if i can find a headstone???? And see what it says.!!
I know I have looked at a William John Callaghan, but then found different name re father, on NSW records. If i remember rightly that was also at Dubbo.
Thank you.

Well that death in Bombala is not your John/WJ Callaghan as there is a corresponding birth same year as death.
But the marriage of John at BH or Dubbo is worth pursuing as I cannot find a birth for a john that fits the bill in NSW.

Hi Neil.
Thanks for checking death details out Neil.
Do you think if I try and follow Laura Thompson/Callaghan and see where that leads??
Any suggestions.
Thanks rainy.
-
I think you need to establish if this john is actually William John, or the whole thing may turn into a wild goose chase.
Maybe a wedding cert transcription for that BH marriage. But some more work on Trove first to establish any new clues.
Tomorrow

Good morning Neil.
Yes will look again through Trove and see what may be there.
They are bringing new papers online regularly.
It is so easy to follow a incorrect line.
Thanks for your assistance.

Seems the boy was in Sydney in 1906 see
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=%22William+Callaghan%22&l-australian=y And Crimping I just found out is keeping a low Lodging house and fleecing Emigrants and Sailors :o
Seems he liked to keep the dollars rolling in, in any manner :o

Hello Neil.
Thanks, you are doing wonders for me.
Seems like he might be a bit of a ratbag.
But then from what I have found there certainly are some questions re this family.
Perhaps why all the others got away to NZ.
Not sure why, James Callaghan the father is so elusive as well.
Perhaps I will try the Electoral Rolls and see if I can follow that way??
what do you think?
Many thanks rainy
