Welcome to Rootschat but it's very difficult to start Irish research for such an early period without knowing an exact location (townland) or at least the parish.

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html) and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start? (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,498742.0.html).

I'm looking for a Sullivan family from Monaghan too. My great grandfather, James Joseph Sullivan was born there in 1879. I've no way of knowing if your family were connected but couldn't hurt to look into a possible connection.

I have Sullivan's from Co Monaghan in my family.. from my grandmothers side in fact my middle name is Sullivan.
I don't have much to go on either but you can see if any of the names ring a bell, here goes -
James Sullivan born Antrim married Mary Small Monaghan children Bernard, Con, Ann, James , Mary, Alice, John all born Monaghan.. family moved to Scotland around 1849-1850 but no wife Mary with them.
James re-married in Glasgow and had more children here.

Moved to Rutherglen near Glasgow and married Mary Harness in 1850 .I presume Mary Small had died. He had several more children.James is my ggg grandfather.
