My mother told me that when she took her 90 year old father back to Gallipoli, where he was wounded at Gully Ravine in WW1, he told her about his sister Agnes's fiance who died there. His name was Patterson, Pattison, Paterson. My mother can't remember his first name. Agnes lived in Morningside, Edinburgh all her life and I would assume her fiance was likely to be an Edinburgh man, possibly a Royal Scot like my grandfather who was B company 1/4 RS. Can anyone help me identify a Patterson, died at Gallipoli, 1915.

You could try searching here but with only a surname of various possible spellings to go on it is a very long shot.

Good grief! I thought there might be more than one but 17! This may have to remain a dead end. Poor great aunt Agnes. She was one of the many who remained a spinster all her life. Thank you for looking that up for me.

Hi Jenny
You could probably whittle down these possibilities by looking for the following:
Officer or Other Ranks? Your grandfather's friend was probably about the same rank as your grandfather.
Date of Death? The battle of Gully Ravine was around 28/6/15 to 12/7/15.
Age.
Regiment.
Good luck!

This wiki article may help narrow down which British Troops were in the area at the time of the Battle of Gully Ravine.

Have you checked for his name on the Morningside War Memorial?
The following forum may possibly be of some help:

Thank you both. I can narrow him down but I have too little information to be sure. Wonderful site for the Morningside War Memorial, so many young men! My family were incredibly lucky, apart from Great Aunt Agnes, to have a Great Grandfather and both his brothers on one side and a grandfather and his brother on the other side all come back. Most families had at least one loss.

What a nice website, unfortunately, this appears to be for Morningside & Chapel in Wishaw not Edinburgh. There is a War Memorial in the cemetery in Edinburgh & as we buried my mother-in-law there recently, next time we visit I will take a look to see if your young man is named.
Cheers

Hi Jenny
As promised, took a look at the memorial in the cemetery on Mothers Day, unfortunately unlike some others I have seen, no names.
Sorry I couldn't be of any help.
