am researching my ancestor john/james baylis, who was trasported on the ship manluis to tasmania in 1830. his trial transcripts show he was living in islington, but was born in cheltenham 1807/1809. he was caught stealing plates and his brothers wife is mentioned in the report as both martha and charlotte. iff anyone has some information on the baylis from those areas i would appreciate it. the only other clue is a christening record for john bailiss 6 dec. 1807 in cheltenham, gloucester. thank you. helen.

Hi Helen
Not entirely clear what information you are after? Or which information you are unable to find?
It seems your John Baylis was also known as James Baylis. He died in Tasmania on 29 October 1880 and the death was registered under the name of James Baylis. He is buried at the Cypress St Anglican Cemetery Newstead. He married another convict Elizabeth McLeish (under the name of John) on 23 February 1835 (Reg Number 2810).
John Baylis was convicted at the Middlesex Gaol on 4 December 1828 and given a term of 7 years. Transportation date 23 April 1830 to Van Diemen's Land.
I'm sure this is info you already have though?
Cheers
Caryn
