Hi
There are two naval service records for him on the NA website, in both he gives his date of birth as 22 April 1835

Hi Lynne
I looked at Hexham PRs while at the archives yesterday - no William Spirit (or similar) there. Perhaps he's in one of the surrounding parishes.

Have you tried browsing the images of baptisms for hexham on familysearch.org?
-
Might not have been born in Hexham , the district covers a wide area and numerous parishes in Tynedale. There were Spirits living at Dipton Wood near Hexham in the 1960's, they might be the same family.
-
Certainly Hexham Registration District covers a wide area, but I'd have thought that someone who gave his birthplace as Hexham in a census would probably intend it to mean that he came from the town of Hexham itself.

Thanks for the info, will check it out.
