Title: Muir's from Paisley.
Post by: Nellie-Bear on Thursday 12 May 05 10:07 BST (UK)
Hi all i am very new to this so i hope i do ok at this.

I am looking for info on   James Muir born 1824,  abbey Paisley Scotland.  James married a Ann Harrison she was born in 1832 England. James and Ann married in Tasmania (VDL) 1850.

his parents are john muir and mary struthers.

If anyone has any information on any Muirs that came to VDL (Tasmania) via the Isabella in 1833 it would be greatly appreciated. I believe James came out with a Matthew and a Peter leaving Leith in 1832.

Kind Regards

Hi Audrey, can i ask is there any information on siblings there as all i have is that james arrived in (VDL) Tasmania per the Isabella in 1833, with a Mr Matthew Muir or Nathaniel (its hard to read) and a Peter Muir, Both James and Peter were listed as minors and Matthew was of age. I am unsure what relationship James and Peter were to Matthew. I hope that the one you have listed is the correct one as it would solve a 25 year mystery.

Kind Regards

I have a connection to a large family of Muirs from Renfrew - one of them Elizabeth (born 1799) married name Miller  arrived in Sydney 1834 on the "Othello". I have a list of all her siblings, which include the names James and Matthew (but no Peter). I cannot instantly see a connection, but while looking I found a submitted IGI record for your James parents Matthew Muir and Margaret Stevenson. Could be worth checking the LDS film to find a family connection.

My family of Muirs, in case you can see a connection are
James Muir 1751  married Mary Whyte (White) 1756. Married in 1779 Erskine
Children
Alexander 1780
Thomas  1782
Elizabeth 1784
Janet 1786
James  1788
William  1790
Matthew 1792
John  1794
George 1796
Elizabeth 1799

Trish

They were all born in Erskine or Renfrew, but Elizabeth was married & her Scottish children were born in Paisley, & some of the brothers moved there as well, being mentioned in the diary of the trip to Oz.

Hi Trish,
I know this is a very silly question. ???
But do you have his death in Australia?
I am presuming you do, and that the informant, didn't know the parents?
I will search in australasia, happily, if this, is not the case.

Hi Kenjo

No question is silly - I have missed so many obvious (after the event) things in my research - but I am a little confused as to who's death you are talking about.
My Elizabeth Muir married Robert Miller and I have a large % of the details of their descendants in Australia. If you have any information on same I would be happy to swap information.

I just ran across this chat room and don't know a thing about researching my family but thought I would ask anyway. My name is James Muir and my father William said our family goes back to Paisley. Does anyone know if the Muir's they are researching ended up in New Jersey, USA. I know my father was born around 1931 or 32 in New Jersey. I have always been interested in my family tree but never knew where to start. I hope someone can get me started.

Thanks,
Jim

Hello Jim

This can become a very addictive hobby. My Paisley Muirs ended up in Australia, but they left many sibling behind in Scotland, one or more of whom could well have ended up in USA. To start checking your family, do you have any details of your grandparents. If your parents/aunts/uncles are still living, a good place to start is asking them questions. If you can post details of your parents/grandparents folks here may be able to help you track them further.

Thanks Trish. I will talk to my dad and get some more information on my grandparents on my fathers side. Possibly some info on uncles as well. Once I get that I will post it here.

I have a journal written by James Muir. it covers a huge period of history and heaps of Muirs from Inchinnan and Paisley. This journal is on my website at www.taggart.co.nz.
I have to go out now, but will go through all the previous messages here and comment on the families I know about.
There is no Peter Muir in the journal!!

Hi Patricia

Welcome to RootsChat and many thanks for your post.

Incredibly interesting - the names look very familiar. You seem to have a James Muir and Mary Whyte about 50 years before my James Muir & Mary Whyte. I will study further & get back to you.

many thanks

Hi Binti

I'm probably confused - but would you mind confirming for me

Is my Elizabeth Muir (born 1799) the sister of your William Muir (presumably born 1790). Are we 5th or 6th or 7th cousins perhaps?

I have a couple of generations back from Elizabeth - simply via ScotlandsPeople and the IGI. Will let you know.

I have been out today & haven't had a chance to research your journal yet. I have a much smaller journal written by Robert Miller (husband of Elizabeth Muir) on their trip to Australia 1833/34.

Did I read the dates incorrectly on your journal? I thought your James Muir and Mary Whyte were much earlier than mine  ???

I have parents of James Muir (Baptism 27 January 1750/51 Inchinnan,Renfrew,Scotland) as Alexander Muir and Janet Paterson - married  25 Jul 1742 Inchinnan.
Siblings Matthew 1745, Janet 1748, Mary 1752, Martha 1754.
(No further back - I think there were too many Alexanders  ??? )

Parents of Mary Whyte (1756) - Thomas Whyte and Elizabeth Blackwood - married 28 August 1740, Erskine.  siblings of Mary - James 1741, William 1744, James 1745, Elizabeth 1748, Janet 1750, John 1753

Parents of Elizabeth Blackwood (1719) were John Blackwood and Janet Petterson married 26 Dec 1718 Erskine. Have found no siblings.
