Post by: rindercella on Tuesday 17 January 12 00:19 GMT (UK)
My ggg grandfather, George Halliday was born in 1754 in Fogo, his father was James Halliday born 1731 in Mertoun, no mother mentioned on bc.  George Halliday married Elizabeth Tait from Langton.  Would be interested to hear from anyone else researching Halliday/Tait from Berwickshire.

My Grandfather was taught to play the Bagpipes directly after WW1 by Robert MacNab Halliday. Robert came from Lauder originally and settled in Gorebridge Midlothian Scotland. He served as a Piper in the 25th of foot Kings Own Scottish Borderers. In 1916 he was promoted to Pipemajor of the 7/8th KOSB. His father was George Halliday a Blacksmith. His Mother was Mary Ann MacNab.
Robert died in September 1949 aged 75

There is also research being conducted in New Zealand for ancestors Halliday in Scotland, they have the line:
George Halliday b 1681 with parents James Halliday and Margaret Cockburn
George Halday married Jean Brounhill
George Halliday b 1780 Gladsmuir married Helen Amos, 2nd wife Marrion (May) Robertson. This George was a Ploughman, had his family at Foulstruther then moved to Greenknowe, (Gordon)Berwickshire. His children Susan, Mary, Margaret, George, John, Robert/2nd family Adam, James, Thomas, Marion, Peter.  A family story has Peter living at Trenants, (his sonPeter lived at Peebles and James at Haddington). Adam was last found in records at Bathgate, James lived at Lauder, Robert lived at Berkenside. George went to work in London however appears to have lived in Lauder, Thomas lived at Stow, The girls and daughters married Powe Brotherston Logan, Cossar,Robertson. There were descendants at Merrimids Well, Lauder.  More Historical Christian names could be Thomas and Elias Halliday.
I wonder if any of the families are related to those in your research?
Regards, June

Hi Gazzabilly

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Have you had a look at the 1862 marriage for Marion to James Cochrane? Available to view online here www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  This would let you confirm Marion's parents names.

Have to say that the only Marion I am seeing in the early censuses is this one in 1851 (as transcribed), with different parents:

David Holiday 50 fish dealer b. Edinburgh
Christian Holiday 53 b. Ayton, berwickshire
Elisabeth Holiday 15
Marion Holiday 12 b. Whitson, berwickshire
Margaret Holiday 10

Address: Westruther Mains

Hi Rinder,
My Gt5 grandfather was George Halliday who married Elizabeth Tait. My Gt4 grandmother was their daughter Margaret Halliday 1786-1866. I have found her brothers and sisters, and they almost certainly all moved to Bute in the late 1790s. I don't know why, but I've even found George Halliday 1754-1841ish in the 1841 census on Bute, married to his second wife, Mary Baxter.
I would love to trace George back further. His parents James Halliday and Elizabeth Laurie seem to have been married in Edinburgh, but this doesn't really make sense as they then had children in Berwickshire. Any help, from anyone.
