Title: Annie Maria Lyons
Post by: Rosie R on Monday 16 January 12 22:07 GMT (UK)
Hi

After Charles Milson was transported to Australia, he married Annie Maria Lyons (sp?) who I believe was born in Basseldon Berkshire in 1816 and came to Australia around 1835 to spent 1 year in Tasmania and then came to NSW. They were married at Segenhoe near Maitland NSW 07/11/1837 and had a number of children including my G Grandfather Edwin Lewis Milson. She died 01/07/1865 at Overton Muswellbrook NSW.

Does anyone have any information in regard to Annie Maria Lyons prior to her coming to Australia and her parents etc?

Hi

I cannot find anything for a Basseldon, Berkshire. There is a Basildon in Berkshire and London, early searches favour London, there are entries on the IGI and Family Search sites. Unless you have more info, this wouldn't be a bad starting point.

Geoff

Annies Death is Reg under MILSOM on NSW BMD;
Annie MILSOM, Died Muswellbrook, 4788/1865
Fathers name listed as LEWIS

Looks like the Death Cert has info on it and I would purchase it if I was you.

There is a LEWIS/CAROLINE Lyon christening Children in the London area in the right time-frame. I have not found a Anne/Annie Maria to them, but they do name a Child Edwin Dukin Lyon.
I noticed Charles/Annie Milson name a Son Edwin Lewis Milson.

1841 Census Lewis is born c 1793 London and is a Tailor/Master Bonnet Maker by trade.
Lewis LYON Married Caroline DUNKIN 30 January 1815, St Bride, Fleet St, London

Now interestingly on the Christening of their 1st Son WILLIAM, 31 Dec 1815, Lewis is down as a Tailor and a Converted Jew.

So if the Death Cert of Annie confirms her Father as Lewis a Tailor, then to find his Chrsitening later you would need access Jewish Records to find his Birth.

I noticed a Family Tree for Charles MILSON having his Parents as CHARLES/ELIZABETH and dying in NSW 1874.

If this is true that he died 1874  in Armidale his Death Reg is under MILLSON and his Father was THOMAS.

IIRC Charles Milsom/Milson came from Stanford Dingley - next door to Basildon (often found as Basseldon) in Berkshire.  He left a wife and children in England when he was transported.

If the wife he married in Australia came from the Berkshire Basildon he could well have known her before he was transported - though she would only have been 14/15 when he was arrested if she was born in 1816.  The baptism register from Basildon for that date is lost - but there are BTs that might show her baptism (held in Wiltshire & Swindon RO).

Hi again Rosie R,
I cant help myself when it comes to Convicts and had to see what I could find on your Charles.

Now most people have him arriving 1840 on the "EDEN"

There is another possibility and I am not sure which one you have?
Charles MILSOM, one of 133 convicts transported on the ELEANOR, 15 February 1831, Convicted sentence- 14 years, Berks Gaol Delivery, conditional Pardon.
Ship departed 31 February 1831.

A Swingriotsbacksheep Site has Charles as age 28 in 1831.
One of the "Swing Rioters"
Anc has him assigned to Potter McQueen at Sedgehoe

EDIT;
I checked your other post and see you have some of this :)

Hello,
It would appear that there may well have been two Charles Millsoms, one arriving on the Eden in 1840, and the other, a carpenter,  on the Eleanor 9 years earlier  in 1831 (The one we are discussing) By all the accounts that I have read he received his ticket of leave in 1835, after which he remarried in 1837.  His life in Australia seems to be fairly well documented but may have got muddled up with a similarly named person arriving in 1840.

PART 1.

Charles Milson & Annie Lyons were my husbands Great Great Grandparents.

Charles Milsom (Milson) (Millson) was born in 1800/2 in Berkshire, UK.
Trial Place:      Reading  (Berkshire UK)  27 December
Trial Year:        1830
Sentence:        14 Years
Age:                28 Years

Over 600 were sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment and around 500 were
sentenced to transportation for either Life, 14 or 7 years.

Charles Milson was married to Martha Bearfield on 23 July 1827 at Aldworth,
Berkshire UK and left behind his wife and 2 children, a boy aged 18 months and a girl
aged 3 years.
Martha was born in 1801 in Aldworth, Berkshire UK.
LDS IGI shows surname as MILLSON.

Prisoners were moved from gaol to the prison hulks, most of whom were sent to
Portsmouth and onto the hulk 'York'.  By 6th February 1831, 244 men were on
board the ship 'Eliza' heading for Tasmania and by April 1831 most of the
remaining prisoners were also sailing - the 'Eleanor' to New South Wales and the
'Proteus' with 112 men to Tasmania.

Convict vessel 'Eleanor' sailed from Portsmouth on 19th February 1831 and arrived in
Sydney, Australia on 25 June 1831 after 126 days.
Embarked: 140 Male convicts - 7 died on voyage and 133 arrived in Sydney.
Ships Master was Robert Cock.
Ships Surgeon was John Stephenson.
The 'Eleanor' was a Barque, 301 tons and was built in Calcutta in 1815.
On arrival in Australia and after being brought ashore the men were assigned either
to government service or to individual settlers.

BOOK:   "The Convicts of the Eleanor" written by David Kent and Norma Townsend
Published by - First published in 2002 by The Merlin Press Ltd, London

ISBN : 1-86403-172-7
In 2010 this book priced at $49.95 Australian Dollars

"The convicts transported on the Eleanor in February 1831 were not hardened
criminals"

A marvellous book telling the whole story.  In this book his name is given as
'Charles MILSON'.

Re-reading this thread owing to the recent post.

Noticed this: there is no Basildon in London, there is one in Essex (25 miles from central of London), which is a decent sized town, far better known than the Berkshire Basildons.

Post by: Vicwinann on Tuesday 03 July 12 06:43 BST (UK)
Basildon in Essex is a New Town amalgamating in 1948 the 4 small villages of Pitsea, Laindon, Basildon and Vange to create overspill housing for London.
As Basildon, Berkshire is but a stone's throw from Stanford Dingley, I would suggest that perhaps this is where Annie Marie Lyons came from but I have no evidence of that.
There are at least two researchers on the net who put her birthplace as Lands End, Cornwall which just goes to show that straws are being grasped, I think.
Does anyone know why Charles Millson changed his name to Charles Clarence Western Millson? (IGI)

There was another CHARLES MILSON who was tried in February 1840 at the Berkshire Lent Assizes.  He was transported on the ship "EDEN" but is NOT the Charles MILSON that married Annie Marie Lyons in NSW Australia in 1837.
