Title: Woodburn, Coleraine
Post by: cwfqueen on Saturday 14 January 12 20:51 GMT (UK)
Thanks. I found out that the cemetery attendant made a mistake when she transcribed the record. It happens.

Do you do Coleraine also? I am new at this. I am looking for a Barbara Wylie Woodburn. I find most of her siblings, except for Janet or Janette. All are children of Matthew Wood Woodburn and Isabella Brown.

THis is my lucky day!
All I have is Jannette's birth information. I would like to know if she married, where she lived and about her death.

I can not find birth information about Barbara Wylie Woodburn. I know that she married James Robinson in Coleraine, but nothing else. Did she go to Canada? have a family? what is her death information?

Matthew Wood Woodburn & Isabella "Bella" Brown had 10 children that I know of. Somewhere I have the baptisms for the children but can't find them at the moment (possibly Terrace Row Presbyterian Church, Coleraine).
3. Barbara Wylie Woodburn born 2 Jan.1863, was a teacher, and married 24 July 1889 Terrace Row to James Robinson of Donaghadee.

9. Jannette Woodburn born 31 May 1872 Coleraine.
this may be her in 1901 census-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Duncairn_Ward/Atlantic_Avenue/956830/

A Janet Woodburn m.Jan./Mar.1902 Belfast Co.Antrim to William James Scott. However,1911 census lists her as Jane Johnston Scott born Belfast so unlikely to be correct person.

Will look for more tomorrow in my files.

Thank you SO much.
I have everyone else's baptisms, but only have death dates for  Robert Riley, Matthew Wood, Julia Wood, and my great grandfather William  Brown Woodburn. Do you have any of the others?
Do you know where the Wood comes from that many have as a middle name?
Do you have any information on the parents pf Bella Brown's parents? She is my great great grandmother.

I am sorry that I am so full of questions. Thank you again!

Hmm... might be more than 10 children as I don't have a Robert listed.
1. George M. Wood Woodburn died 11 Aug.1862 aged 1 year 3 months.
2. Janet Brown Woodburn died 18 Apr.1862 aged 11 months.
3. Barbara Wylie Woodburn
4. Isabella Brown Woodburn married John Browne Scott.
5. Matthew Wood Woodburn to U.S.
6. Agnes Wilson Woodburn married Abraham H. Brewster.
7. Julia Woodburn
8. William Brown Woodburn died 1911 Chicago.
9. Jannette Woodburn
10. Alexander Woodburn
If the 1901 census record I posted earlier is Jannette/Janet then Agnes W. Woodburn listed in the same household could be another sister.

Not sure about the name Wood- it doesn't seem to appear earlier in either Woodburn or Dripps families as far as I know and only seems to be used for Matthew and his descendants.

Isabella Brown's father was a William Brown "muslin agent."

I did not have Janet Brown Woodburn.
These are the notes that I have on Robert Riley Woodburn:(I don't know if this is okay to post on this forum)
Robert was born in Ireland. According to his granddaughter, he was from Coleraine, in N. Ireland. She also thinks he had two sisters who lived in N. Ireland. (This recollection is consistent with the information supplied by David Woodburn, who said that two daughters of Matthew and Isabel Woodburn, a Mrs. Scott of Ballymena and a Mrs. Brewster of Coleraine, lived in Ireland while their seven other children went to the United States.) According to Nancy Rosenblatt, he greatly admired Queen Victoria and he had a fiery temper.
Robert immigrated to the United States on the S.S.Scandinavian, arriving in the Port of Baltimore in September 1888. His age is shown to be 22, his occupation is shown to be a miner, and his intended destination is Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. From some reason, the manifest states he from Scotland.
Do you know where Bella Brown was born? Where did you get the information about her father. I am at a dead end with the Browns.
Thank you.

Robert became a U.S. citizen on October 4, 1890 for which his sponsor was J. McAfee. (According to "A List of Immigrants Who Applied for Naturalization Papers in the District Courts of Allegheny Co., Pa.", W.Pa.Gen.Soc., v.6, p.105.). According to his death certificate, Robert was C.P.A. He was active in the Knights Templar, having served as the Master of the Avalon Lodge and in 1902 Commander of the Ascalon Commandery, No. 59 before affiliating himself with the Pittsburgh Commandery No, 1 in 1908.

According to the 1930 Census, Robert (age 67), lived with his wife Martha (age 63) and their son Morrow (age 25) and their daughter Mary Johnson (age 36) and her two children Jack (age 6) and Robert (age 4), at 822 Florence Ave., Avalon, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Robert immigrated to the U.S. in 1880. He worked as a laborer at a bank.

He died of bladder cancer at 2:30 p.m. on August 26, 1933.

The following death notice was published in the August 27, 1933 edition of the Pittsburgh Press:

Woodburn--Saturday, Aug. 26, 1933, at 3:50 p.m., Robert R., aged 72 years, husband of Martha Young Woodburn. Funeral Service at his late residence, 822 Florence Ave., Avalon, PA, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Member of Avalon Lodge No. 657, F&A M. Royal Arch Chapter, Zerubbabel No. 162, Pittsburgh Commandery, No. 1 Knight Templars: Syria Temple, A.A.O.M.S, and friends invited.

Were Janet Brown and George twins? According to their death dates, they would have had to be. What is the source for their deaths? Robert Riley wouldn't fit birth-wise, so something is wrong. I have a picture of him and his wife. I will have to look at where I got it.

I also have a Mary Leslie:According to the birth record obtained by The Genealogy Centre, Derry, NI, from the town of Coleraine, NI, Mary Leslie was born to Matthew and Isabella on December 31, 1881 on Railway Place, Colerine, NI.

I've split these 'Woodburn' posts from the Maguire (Fermanagh) thread and moved to Derry/Londonderry board.

Am wondering if Robert (I found my notes on him), George and Janet were triplets going by the likely birthdates?
From an American source, Robert Riley (possibly should have been Wiley) Woodburn born 3 June 1861.
From Coleraine Chronicle, George died 11 Aug.1862 aged 1 yr. 3 months which is cMay 1861.
Another obituary in Coleraine Chronicle says Janet died 18 Apr.1862 aged 11 months (so cMay 1861).

Possibly more than the 10 children I listed earlier-
- Robert Riley (3 June 1861)- to U.S.
- George M. Wood (cJune 1861 Church St.?)- died young
- Janet Brown (cJune 1861 Church St.?)- died young
- Barbara Wylie (2 Jan.1863)
- Isabella Brown (23 Nov.1864 North Brook St.)
- Matthew Wood (25 Mar.1866 North Brook St.) to U.S.
- Agnes Wilson (30 Aug.1867 North Brook St.)
- Julia (26 Apr.1869 Railway Place)
- William Brown (15 Feb.1871 Railway Place?)
- Jannette (31 May 1872 Railway Place)
- Alexander (30 May 1873 Railway Place)
- Mary Leslie (31 Dec.1881 Railway Place)- this is possibly the May W. Woodburn in 1901 census mentioned earlier

Belfast Newsletter, 2 Feb.1888: WOODBURN- January 31, at Railway Place, Coleraine, Bella Browne, dearly-beloved wife of Matthew Wood Woodburn, aged 45 years. Interment will take place in the Cemetery, Coleraine, this day (Thursday), at twelve o'clock noon. Friends will please accept this intimation.  Matthew W. Woodburn.

George and Janet (died 1862) are both children of Matthew-
Coleraine Chronicle, 19 Apr.1862: At Church Street, Coleraine, on the 18th inst., Janet Brown, infant daughter of Mr. M.W. Woodburn, aged 11 months.
Coleraine Chronicle, 16 Aug.1862: At Church Street, Coleraine, on the 11th inst., George M. Wood, infant son of Mr. M.W. Woodburn, aged 1 year and 3 months.
Note: just to confuse us Samuel Woodburn and wife Isabella Toye lived on Church Street in 1890s.

Do you know if James Brown is Robert James Brown, her brother?

Sorry, I don't know.

Matthew Wood Woodburn & Bella Brown's Marriage record states that William Brown, father of Bella Brown, was a farmer.

Elizabeth Woodburn, his sister, married John Brown, son of William,  a muslin agent.

Would anyone have information about Ellin Woodburn, daughter of Matthew Woodburn & Isabella Dripps, baptised 1st Garvagh Pres. Church. 1841 or her sister, Isabella, baptised 1828?

Thanks.

I have Isabella Brown's father William as muslin agent.

Other than baptisms in 1st Garvagh I haven't any records for the two girls. My notes say Ellen was baptised 12 Jan.1840 (will have to re-check year later) and Isabella 20 Nov.1828.

Thanks for looking.
I have 12 Jan 1841 for Ellin.
I saw a marriage - Isabella Woodburn & William Linton, 1848, but dismissed it  as Isabella would only have been 15 or 16  if she was born before January. Would you consider it unlikely?
I 'll check the Bella Brown marriage. Could  the Woodburn brother & sister have married siblings? The surname Shannon appears on both records.
How very interesting!
Thanks again!
