Mary Josephine Fitzgerald was my great-great-aunt, and I'm intrigued to know what happened to her. She turned up on the 1901 census, aged 19, but she wasn't on the 1911 census. I know she most likely got married, but I'd love to know what happened to her. She lived at 173, Great Brunswick Street (now Pearse Street) in 1901.
If anyone finds anything, the help would be greatly appreciated, since I want to know did she just move out, did she get married, or did she die. On the 1911 census Thomas and Lucinda were listed as having had 14 children, but that only 11 were still alive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There doesn't seem to be a likely death or marriage for Mary Josephine on the BMD index in the Dublin area - but it's possible that she was recorded without her middle name.

Hi,
I may be able to help on this one. I'm researching the Fitzgerald family also.
Information I have to date on Mary Josephine Fitzgerald as follows:
She married Joseph McDermott - in 1904
Source: www.familysearch.org
ref: Dublin South
Apr/Jun 1904
Volume: 2
P. 681
She is listed on Census 1911 under the name McDermott of 12 Mark Street (Trinity ward).
is at home with husband and 4 children.
In 1921 Mary Josephine McDermott(nee Fitzgerald) identified the body of her younger brother Leo Fitzgerald who was shot and died in Great Brunswick Street on14.03.1921
Source: irishnewspaperarchives.com
Paper: Irish Independent 1905 - current
Article: "Inquiries and funerals' dated: 18.03.1921
The other query regarding the 3 missing children of Thomas Fitzgerald & Lucinda Doolin (Lucinda is my connection) I may also be able to help.
Joseph, Elizabeth & Patrick born 21.03.1897
death refs for all three: www.familysearch.org
Apr/Jun 1897
Dublin South
Volume 2
Page: 496
they are buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in family plot: St. Bridgets JH 260.5
That's it if I find anything else I'll post it here
Forgive the lack of direct links - I'm new at this.
Regards

I can add the information that Mary Fitzgerald must have been very proud of her family. For one thing, she named her son after her brother, Theobald Wolfe Tone Fitzgerald! Her son, Wolfe Tone (known as Tone) McDermott was my grandfather... Theobald and Joe (Joseph) McDermott, Mary's husband were together at Boland's Mills... pity more of the women's stories are so hidden in these searches/histories - Mary's identification of her young dead brother must have been hugely traumatic & Sheila Fitzgerald is also a veteran of 1916. Family lore tells it that Leo was killed on his 21st birthday.
-
Hi Ruth & Nessa
Leo was born on 12.03.1893 - I have a copy of his birth certificate. So that would make him 28 yrs old when he died (14.03.1921) I haven't been able to find his official death cert in GRO indexes - it may have been a very late registration. If anyone can help on that would be much appreciated. Leo is buried in Glasnevin - south Chapel ref no: 368570
Your grandfather Theobald McDermott - was he born in 1913? I only have the children that Mary Josephine Fitzgerald/McDermott listed on Census 1911.
Lucinda Doolin/Fitzgerald was my great aunt. My great grandfather James Doolin was Lucinda Doolin/Fitzgerald's brother. James & his wife Mary Jane Fitzpatrick/Doolin were witnesses for marriage of Lucinda Doolin & Thomas J. Fitzgerald on 1st June 1881.
So that would make us some form of cousins. I think Lucinda Doolin/Fitzgerald is your great great grandmother?
I would be interested in any other info you may have on this family.

What a proud family history,i have just been reading all about the Fitzgeralds family and the part they played between 1916 and 1922 on the new military pension site, mentions Sheila/Julia and other brothers that took part.

Just for the record I looked at the day Leo died and there were other deaths as well; Leo Fitzgerald was killed on March 14th 1921, as were Constable James O'Farrell and Cadet Bernard Beard of the Dublin Metropolitan Police. LINK (http://www.militaria-archive.com/independence/vb-photo/content/Vincent_Byrne_Scrapbook_221_large.html) Leo died on the steps of what is now Pearse Street Library.
The death of Bernard Beard in in Dublin North Apr-Jun 1921 V2 P393 aged 32; presumably he was either brought home or to a hospital that put him into the Dublin North District
I cannot see a death record for Constable O'Farrell
Edited to add
I agree with Tara that there is a possibility that this is Leo'sdeath, registered as Patrick Fitzgerald his middle name
Dublin South 1921 Apr-Jun aged 28 Volume 2 page 516

Re: James Farrell/O'Farrell and Cadet Beard - I have gone through newspaper clippings I have for the Fitzgerald family and I hope the following is of help to you.
Source: Irish Independent March 18th 1921
Article Title: Inquiries & Funerals
At the end of the article the following paragraph:
Funeral of Cadets
"The remains of the 2 Auxiliary victims of the Great Brunswick St shooting understood to be those of Section- Leader Beard M.C, and Temp. Cadet Farrow (presumably the cadet also referred to as Farrell and O'Farrell) were removed by the L.N.W steamer from Dublin t Holyhead last night, the body of the former being it was understood, bound for Nottingham, and of the latter for Birmingham for burial. The remains were escorted by about 10 tenders containing Auxiliaries, lorries with soldiers, and R.I.C men; an armoured car bringing up the rear. Several beautiful wreaths were held on the coffins."
Earlier in the article it states that an inquiry into the death of Bernard O'Hanlon took place in King George V Hospital. Bernard O'Hanlon was buried in Dundalk.
Edit: Wreaths were laid on the coffins

'Just registered with Rootschat and found this thread about Mary Josephine FitzGerald. Theo FitzGerald was my grandfather and I have been doing some family research. I seem to remember reading that Mary Josephine suffered from mental illness and was in a hospital in Dublin by that time. I think I read it in Great grandfather Thomas FitzGerald's application for a dependent's pension after Leo's death in the Bureau of Military History.

I notice that Thomas J. Fitzgerald was stated to be the tenant of No.173 Gt. Brunswick St. when it was to be auctioned (The Irish Times 23rd April 1892 Page 8 ) and later there are 2 further references to him as a Donor.

Thanks, Very interesting. What does being a “Doner” mean?
-
Donor= one who makes a gift
Felixquaxer
-
Thanks, I understand the meaning of the word "donor" in the general sense but wondered what it meant in the context of Thomas FitzGerald being a donor?
-
The answers are contained in advertisements in the Irish Times for 16th May 1895 @P3 and 22nd April 1896 @ P.4

"She is listed on Census 1911 under the name McDermott of 12 Mark Street (Trinity ward).
is at home with husband and 4 children."
Hi all, pretty late to this thread. My great great grandfather is Francis Doolin, Lucinda Doolins brother. Francis also lived in 12 Mark street in the 1911 census.
The McDermotts lived in 12.1 and the Doolins lived in 12.4. So Mary Josephine lived in the same house as her uncle and cousins.
I also have some information of Lucinda and Francis parents if anyone is interested
Thanks
Aidan

Leo Fitzgerald was Lieutenant in B Coy, 3rd Batt, Dublin Brigade in 1916.
Theo Fitzgerald, the Fianna lad who painted Constance Markievicz green flag with "Irish Republic" in gold on it - one of the two flags flown over the GPO in 1916, the other being a tricolour - married Áine Malone, the sister of Michael Malone who died during a gun-battle at Mount Street Bridge in Dublin city in the Easter Rising in 1916.
