Hi
I just found this
Thomas Lilley founded the shoe manufacturers and retailers Lilley &
Skinners.
He founded the firm in 1835 in Southwark, London, and was known simply
as 'Thomas Lilley'.
The business prospered and in c1849 branch factories were opened at
Wellingborough and Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire.
In 1870s a retail shop was opened in the Harrow Road, London, followed
by many others, and the firm's headquarters moved to Edgware Road.
In 1881 William Banks Skinner was taken into partnership, and the name
of the firm changed to Lilley and Skinner.

hi
I don't think that Stead and Simpson exist anymore, they were a casualty of the recession, may be wrong
Judy

Sorry to contradict you but Stead and Simpson still exist unless they have gone since about Christmas time

Did you not follow the links I posted?
You can buy Stead&Simpson shoes online at the Stead&Simpson domain
Companies House lists Stead & Simpson Ltd as 00312688, last return made 1/1/2011 next due 9/2012.
S&S were taken over as were L&S and a host of others by British Shoe.
Wiki= "the British Shoe Corporation, based in Leicester, went on to own the Trueform, Curtess, Dolcis, Manfield, Saxone and Lilley & Skinner brands. ..."
The "About Us" page on the link on the Stead&Simspon Domain I posted says ..........
" .............In 1981 the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange and became "Stead & Simpson plc". The Stead and Simpson families still remained in control until 1989.
...............In January 2008 Stead and Simpson went into administration and was acquired by the Shoe Zone Group. The business now has 227 stores and has significant investment plans to return it to its former glory."

Hello Everyone,
I tried the link but the connection did not work, then i retried and sent an email but the email was returned as error.
So i believe that the site link is not avail.
The Census to which i was refering to was 1891, but in 1881 my ancestor was logged as a bootlaster but in lodgings in Paddington. His futur wife and family are logged as shoe buttonners at factory and spindle winders in factory.
I acertain that the pair obviously met in a shoe factory which as they were Howell street and Adpar street that the shoe factory would be fairly local.
Thankyou to all for your help in trying to solve this. Dee
