I discovered the burial plot of my Gt Gt Grandgather in Deansgrange Cemetary, Dublin and buried in it in 1868 is Peter McGuirk single, soldier, 35 years years. I have found reference to a Peter McGuirk abt 1833 Derrylossory, Wicklow. I am trying to find out more abt this man as it would trace my family to Wicklow but dont know what records to search.

Not easy to confirm a connection for a single person, especially when such early dates are involved.... but you could check to see if baptisms are available in the area.
Derrylossary is a civil parish, and the corresponding RC parish would likely be Roundwood. Unfortunately RC baptism records for this parish only go back to the 1850s. You could try widening the search to the neighbouring parish of Glendalough as the records there go back further to about 1807. It seems historic Church of Ireland records for the parish do not survive.
Have you looked for military records ?

Thank you v much Shane will try Glendalough and military records.

The film number for Glendalough parish in the National Library is Pos. 6474.
The NLI film (Pos. 9372) for Roundwood parish only seems to cover back to the 1880s, so for later McGuirk records in the area, i.e. after the 1850s, you might have to check for access in the parish, or try RootsIreland (pay-website).

Thank you for all your assistance. Some years ago I looked at Enniskerry parish records in the National Library and got details of various McGuirks attending christenings etc as sponsors. I have traced family from 1850 in Blackrock and this find of Peter has sent me in the Wicklow direction to try and find earliers records.

I have had a fruitless search for details of this man Peter McGuirk but in a related link to another search for Richard McGuirk I might have some tie up. Rootschat is amazing. Thank you all at Rootschat.

Hi 'ourgang'
I'm not sure if you know this already but Peter McGuirk from Derrylossary Wicklow is on the 1851 English Census.
It states that he was in Little Warley Rochester Essex - East India's Company Depot Warley Barracks.

Hello Tara,
Yes I had found that 1851 census but thank you for looking it up. But, I didn't know if he was the same man. I just had details of a 35 years soldier Peter buried in Deansgrange in 1868. I might get some further details from Louise who has just contacted me about a topic Richard McGuirk who could be Peter's brother. You are all marvellous at Rootschat. I have received so many leads on many other family members.

Hiya
Have you any idea of Richard's father's name ??

Tara,
Thank you so much. That must be him. I dont at this stage know the name of Richard McGuirk's father I am waiting for info from Louise who has just contacted me. I had guestimated that Sarah McGuirk was born about 1815 and I know now had my great grandfather Edward their only child born in Dublin in Booterstown in 1851. She could also have been the mother of Peter 1831. Louise tells me they were from Glendalough. I guestimated that Richard was born about 1802. From Deansgrange cemetry info Sarah died in 1870 at 55yrs and Richard died in 1878 at 76 yrs.

Hopefully you get the answers that you need from Louise.
Good Luck

Thank you for all the help. I now have confirmation of who Patrick McGuirk is and I will try and complete the topic.

Hi, there are still McGuirks living in the Derralossary area, specifically in the townland of Tomriland.

Hello Del 101,
Thank you very much for this info. I have done very little search on the Wicklow connection for my McGuirks. Shane gave me details for parish records last January but I haven't been to the Library this year at all - I went off on a tangent doing my maternal side of the family!
If you are related to the McGuirks of Tomirland please PM me .
