I am trying to trace any information on a Sinnamon who emigrated from Northern Ireland in the 1800s
and also a Jim (?) Thompson from Northern Ireland, related through his mother to Sinnamons,
who also emigrated to New Zealand possibly between 1930 and 1950.

Hi
do you have the names of the SINNAMON family you are after
in Electoral rolls there are, with the year they first appear after name:
Hugh 1881, Annie G 1893, John Thomas 1893, Martha Elizabeth 1893
Bye
Althea

These two sites will help you.
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast
It has a marriage for a Hugh Sinnamon in 1869 plus other articles for the surname which I didn't look at.
NZ BMD's at https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/home/
Hughes death is there in 1908 age 68 plus other simmanons birt death and marriages.
There are also army records for an Albert Sinnamon and Alan Darcy Sinnamon WW1
John Edward Sinnamon and Allen Darcy Sinnamon WW11
Do you want the details?

Hello althea and crisane
Thank you for replying. crisane ... any details which you have found would be much appreciated.
The only information which I have is of a Thomas Sinnamon, born in County Armagh Northern Ireland,
married to Nancy (Mills) and their children were:
John Wentworth b. 23 Sep 1864
William Thomas A. b. 27 Dec 1866
Mary Ann b. 5 May 1869
Susanna b. 12 Sep 1871
Elizabeth Jane b. 31 Mar 1875
Martha Eleanor b. 2 Oct 1877
Robert James b. 29 Jan 1880
Hugh Lockhart b. 25 July 1882
Anna Maria b. about 1886
all in County Down or County Armagh in Northern Ireland.
It may be that one of Thomas's brothers, whose name I have not yet traced emigrated from Ireland to
New Zealand in the 1800s.
Thomas was born about 1830 in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, so a brother may have been
born, gave or take 10 years, of that year.

Many thanks althea, Janette and crisane for your helpful replies.
You have given me much food for thought on other Sinnamons who came
from Bleary , County Down. The information will probably keep me occupied
for the remainder of our winter ;)
I presume that nothing could be traced on a Jim (?) Thompson who may have
resided with a Sinnamon family from about the 1930s onwards.
Leslie
-
Thre are a lot of Jim Thompson's
I have just looked at 1935 and there are alot of Sinnamon at Poolburn in the electoral roll
in that roll there was no Jim Thompson at same place...several other areas of central otago
Have you looked at the pay per view passenger sites to see what year he came to NZ..middle names,,age etc would all help
Bye
althea

Thanks althea.
I will have to do some more research in Northern Ireland on this Thompson.

Hi are you connected to the Sinnamon family in Poolburn/Central Otago?
They owned the neighbouring farm to my Love family.... A few years ago we were lucky to hear from Mr Sinnamon before he passed away - he remembered my GG grandparents vividly!
I just visited the area in Dec, happy to send you some more info if this is your lot :)
Cheers,
Anita

Wow Anita
they say its a small world. Isn't that amazing :o

althea

Sure is - especially in New Zealand! ;D
By the way - alot of the Sinnamon family (of Central Otago) are buried in the Omakau cemetary. There may have been some children attending the 'Blacks' primary school (Ophir).
Also the book by Ken Leask - "Ophir Memories" may have a story or two about the family...
**EDIT**
Yes there were some Sinnamons at Blacks school - I just found some copies I made of the old school photos, one had names attached ;D I will have to re-scan the photo which has Vivian and Rachel Sinnamon in it, the copy is very dark...
Here attached is another school photo, no names unfortunately. Bound to be some relations in there! Photo credit to NZ Historic places trust/Ophir Post Office archives.
Excerpt from Ophir brochure "Walk around historic Ophir"
"Blacks School siteThe original corrugated iron school of 1867 was replaced by a stone building and an adjacent school house. Both were constructed of stone from nearby Raggedy Range in 1882. It was replaced by a new school (now a play centre) in 1956. It survived for a time but sadly was demolished in 1961 'in the interests of public safety.' Former pupils of the old school can remember the frozen ink in the ink wells on winter mornings and black currant jam sandwiched wrapped in newspaper."
I have 4 generations of family from Central Otago, namely Paerau (Styx), Poolburn (Ida Valley) and Ophir. My grandfather grew up in Ophir and would have attended the old Blacks school.
-
As promised here is the other photo I have of Blacks school in Ophir. Sorry it was a very dark photocopy of a photocopy! :P
The historic places trust based at the Ophir post office may have access to a better copy...
If I have read the names correctly;
Vivian Sinnamon - first row, far right (white collar)
Rachel Sinnamon - second row seated, fourth from the left (all white dress)
Cheers,
Anita ;D

The Thompson that I was trying to trace was James Jackson Thompson.
He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, between July and September 1913. His mother was Martha Ellen/Eleanor Sinnamon, born 1877-79, daughter of Thomas Sinnamon [and Nancy Mills] from Bleary, County Down, born about 1830 and died 20 August 1908.

I can only see two Electoral roll entries for a James Jackson Thompson. There is no other Thompson at the same address.
1957 9 Hinau Road Wellington Central occupation clerk
1963 23 Adelaide road Island bay Wellington, occupation Process worker

Thank you crisane.
The information which I have received in recent days has helped me to fill
in a gap in my family tree.
It looks as though James was a batchelor when he died.

Hi Lesl1e:
I am from Canada. I am the great-grandson of Elizabeth Jane Sinnamon (b. 31 Mar 1875). She married Andrew Cunningham and their daughter Emily emigrated to Niagara Falls, ON in 1929.
In a chat that I just read that you were involved in back in January 2012, it was indicated that Elizabeth Jane's father, Thomas, was married to Nancy Mills. Would you happen to have any information about Nancy's ancestors?
Cheers, William
-
Hello William,
I believe that Nancy's father was William Mills.
Nancy and Thomas married in the Church of Ireland in Tullylish, Banbridge,
County Down so William Mills' family must have come from around there.
Good luck in your research.
Regards, Leslie

I am a descendant of Hugh Lockhart Sinnamon who emigrated to New Zealand sometime in the 1860's, after first going to the gold rush in Victoria, Australia. We believe that Hugh is the brother of Thomas Sinnamon who married Nancy Mills. I have James Jackson Thompson on my Sinnamon Family tree, who came to New Zealand aboard the "Ruahine" in June 1954. His DOB was 11 August 1913, and he died on 17 June 1968 (as previously mentioned).
I believe that James also had a brother, Noel John Sinnamon Thompson. If you want any more information on the Sinnamon side of your family, particularly in New Zealand, feel free to get in touch! Whilst there have been a couple of other Sinnamon's who came to New Zealand, it is only my ancestor, Hugh Lockhart, who actually settled here.
-
Hello Tikva,
Good to hear from you again.
I have Noel's birth and death (about 2002 ?) in Camberley, Surrey, England
and also James's birth and death dates.
Do you know if James ever married and had any children ?
Dace Sinnamon gave me Bill Sergeant's address and he sent me a copy of Noel's
autobiography. Very interesting.

Hi again,
Further to my post above, I have recently discovered that Hugh Lockhart Sinnamon DID in fact have a sister that emigrated to New Zealand and they settled here. Her name was Martha and she married a Charles Lockhart in Ireland and they emigrated to New Zealand shortly thereafter. Not sure if that's of interest to you though.
I ordered her Death Printout here in New Zealand, and was FINALLY able to find out the name of their mother! Her name was Mary Parr, not Susannah Lockhart as we had thought. A brick wall finally broken through after so many years of searching. Get in touch if you'd like more info.

Charles Lockhart and Martha Sinnamon were the witnesses to that 1864 marriage between Thomas Sinnamon and Nancy Mills:
