Does anyone know if the graveyard is still there?

Googling St Marks Lane, Cheetham Hill then going onto streetview shows a derelict cemetery on the south side of the road with a few monuments standing and lots of slabs lying down. Whether this has changed since the streetview cameras were there I don't know.

Hello
Some of my ancestors are buried at St Mark's. Several years ago (5?) my brother and I went to have a look. There was no access, there was a fence all around. However we were able to squeeze through a hole in the fence.
It was very disappointing. We were lucky my ancestors grave was one of those remaining above ground, we spotted it after a fruitless half hour lookin looking at slabs laid down. If you are looking for one of those it would be very difficult, the slabs were covered in overgrowth and rubbish.
Someone on here posted a link to images of Lancashire and Cheshire parish registers. St Mark's were there. I think the link was to part of familysearch but I don't know how to get there.

Thanks for the information. If my ancestors have a gravestone I suspect it will be one the ones that is lying down. Next time I'm in the UK I intend to go and have a look.

Hi,
We visited St Mark's not so long ago,(last month) and got a few photo's taken.
I have put together my own index of names for the Monumental inscriptions for this graveyard. (and have a few photo's of stones)
It is a Great Graveyard lots of old stones many from the late 1700's.
There is some vandalism and some are sprayed with graffiti.
Pm the details and I take a look for you.
Cancan :)

Wow Cancan - well done - what a result from our little trip around St Marks ;D.
I would be scared of going into St Mark's on my own though, it is in a dreadful state (overgrown with shringes and needles and various items of underwear >:(). It would have been a beautiful cemetery if it had been maintained. Some of the stones go back to the 1700's.

The number listed as the gravestone number isn't, it is the number given when transcribing.
No. 1284
COATON Samuel 66 12 Sep. 1815
COATON Frances 80 31 Aug 1823 Wife of Samuel
ANDREW Samuel 74 16 Nov 1841
ANDREW Mary 74 14 Mar 1841 Wife of Samuel
Next to this gravestone is this grave, So, not sure if connected.
No.1283
ANDREW Sarah 53y 30 Oct 1848 Wife of William
ANDREW Mary 2y 10wks 6 May 1825 Dau of Wm & Sarah
ANDREW Eleanor 2y 7mos 18 Aug 1827 Dau of Wm & Sarah
ANDREW William 1y 7mos 2 Sep 1834 Son of Wm & Sarah
ANDREW Harriet 7y 6mos 8 Nov 1834 Dau of Wm & Sarah
ANDREW Rachel 5y 7mos 6 Dec 1834 Dau of Wm & Sarah
ANDREW Benjamin 1y 7mos 10 Sep 1837 Son of Wm & Sarah
There are other ANDREW'S in the Churchyard.
These two stones are at the entrance on St Mark's Lane.
If you go on Google Satellite and St Mark's Lane up towards St Hellier's Drive, if you zoom in you will see a break in the wall which is where the entrance into the Churchyard is.
Street view shows the entrance and your stones are to the left of this.
If viewing from above they are two or three stones right from the entrance at the end of the row, closest to the wall.
(Hope you can follow my directions - I'm worse than a SatNav ::))
The stones are flat stones.
Cancan :)

I think this is the inscription from 1284 ???:-
Samuel COATON Died: 12 Sep 1815 aged 66 yrs; Frances COATON w/o Samuel COATON Died: 31 Aug 1823 aged 80 yrs; Samuel ANDREW Died: 16 Nov 1841 aged 74 yrs; Mary ANDREW w/o Samuel Andrew Died: 14 Mar 1841 aged 75 yrs;

It's just dawned on me maybe Saint Mark's will suffer the same fate as Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Cemetery.I had/have family members in both, so just to remind the relevant authorities and put it on record that they both had/have historical notables, who I'm sure they would like to celebrate, here's a couple I didn't know till recently.
Rev. Charles Ethelston 1740 - 1795 founder of one of the first Sunday/day schools in Manchester...1777... Saint Paul,Turner Street/Tib Street (buried Saint Mark's), his son Charles Wickstead Ethelston, reader of The Riot Act at Peterloo and also the Vicar of Saint Mark's buried there in 1830.There are many more of course and I don't think it would be overstating the case to suggest that Saint Mark's is indeed important.
All this info came from Manchester Libraries,National Archives and "Manchester Streets and Manchester Men".. Thomas Swindells and hopefully correct :)

I'm pleased to report that a clearance of the graveyard is planned and following that a full survey will be carried out and all graves indexed and their inscriptions recorded. We hope to be able to arrange access for those people researching their ancestors. Facebook Group 'Friends Of St Mark's Cheetham' will be launched very soon.

Hi Cancan,
I read your post about St Mark's Churchyard, Cheetham Hill and wondered if you could give me any clue to the location of the gravestone of John Crawford (died 15.12.1803) Photgraph of broken gravestone attached.
Many thanks,
nandicraw
Ps Can't attach photo for technical reasons but it is available on findagrave.com
