Title: Unusual Greek/Cypriot Surname.
Post by: LAS1015 on Thursday 12 January 12 19:47 GMT (UK)
Hello There,

I am wondering if anyone would be able to help me with a surname dilemma?  The surname being:  SOURKOUNOUDES... and what the possible variants might be?  It may even be a misspelling, so, as you can see, it really is a 'dilemma', with not much to go on.  I'd greatly appreciate any help/advice you may be able to offer.

Many thanks in advance,

LAS1015

I have had a look at the web search pages, and at Ancestry USA and found nothing. Where are you getting the name from??

Regards

Malky

Hi Malky,

The full name - 'Demetrios Sourkounoudes', is as reported in the Cyprus Gazette circa 1949(ish), he was entering into a partnership at that time so I would've thought that the spelling would be correct.  He was the relative of a close friend of mine.  I too have searched ancestry and the usual search engines all to no avail.  Perhaps there was a misspelling ... if only I could find another Sourkounoudes.
Thank you so much for your reply - much appreciated.

Hi LAS1015
As carinthiangirl has in her post, Greek names commonly end in is rather than es

So maybe you could look for SOURKOUNOUDIS  ?  or Sourkonidis?

There was about 50 years ago a book published called "It must be true!  It was all in the papers"
detailing bloopers in newspapers.  Even these days, I often see in death and funeral notices that someone is 'formally from xx"  and sometimes a notice is repeated the following day, with a variant in spelling, or someone with a feminine name is listed as husband of someone else with a feminine name (and their age rules out same sex marriage   ::)  ::)  ::) , plus they have umpteen children and grandchildren)

Hi Dawn M,

Many thanks indeed for your posts ... very much appreciated  :)

Up until now I've only really dealt with British surnames, and so this really is 'all Greek to me' (easier to learn how to knit fog!).

I do appreciate your help - thanks so much!

Kind regards LAS1015

Hi,

I had a look in the Greek telephone book and there are no Sourkounoude(i)s, could not find it on google either (in Greek. Nearest would be Kounoudis.
