Title: Mary Anne Carolan
Post by: AshleyMay on Thursday 12 January 12 16:51 GMT (UK)
Just a shot in the dark: I am looking for any info on my g-grandmother, Mary Anne Crolan, b. 16 Jan 1894 in Shercock co Cavan, I have VERY little info, only that her mother was a teacher and died when Mary Anne was 11 ish (1905), that the family lived in both Scotland and Ireland and that she had 3 brothers.... She moved to Canada in approx. 1911...
If anything seems familiar, please get back to me, it would be very much appreciated...Thanks.

There’s a birth for a Mary Anne Carolan registered in Bailiborough, Co Cavan Jan – Mar 1894 Volume 2, page 341. That’s the right date and general area for the details you have given.

Thank you :) There's no other information with that record, is there? I got my information thru her re-issued birth certificate, and it does not show her parents' names....

That sounds like one of the old short-form birth certs ... a research cert will show a scan/photocopy of the details recorded in the birth register.

All you need to order the cert are the BMD Index references mentioned above.

Thank you :) The parent's names will be there for sure?

And is there no way to find these records online? Just wondering if I will have to order every family member's info i.e the brothers and the parents....

See the link above in reply #3, for the details included on a cert. All the details will usually be entered.

If the birth is illegitimate then the father's details may not have been recorded.

The BMD index is online and free to access on the FamilySearch website (see below), but you need to order the certs to see the full record. Some pay-websites offer transcripts of civil records, but I dont think any cover Co. Cavan - and these usually cost more the the GRO certs (€5 vs €4)

see : Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)

Have you found the family on the 1901 and/or 1911 census in Ireland or Scotland ?

Some time ago I had found a family or two on censuses that were possiblities, but could never be sure if they were the right ones, seeing as I only have one daughters name and little else... I have checked the 1911 Candian census and I cannot find her....

Thanks for the cert info, I think I'll just order it via money order from the GRO...

Have you a marriage record for Mary Anne ?

These usually show details of father, or even both parents, and might help narrow the search on the Irish and/or Scottish 1901 census returns..

I have, but it doesn't list any family. She was married in Canada, in 1917, and used the name May Sullivan Carling (I assume that the May and Sullivan have something to do with her mother's name, but have searched every combination I can think of and found nothing, and as for the Carling, she moved to Quebec and I think it was just simpler.... even my g-grandfather's name, which was John was written Jock.... Not the best record keepers, ha ha....
On the 1901 census, I found a family listed under Carlan, but I can't be sure it is them:
Patrick Carlan 1857
Mary 1858
Andrew 1886
John 1889
James 1892
Mary 1894
Patrick 1896
It fits, but like I said I can't be sure it is them....

Neither do I, and honestly, I'm not even sure where I got that info, it was scribbled on a paper I just found, had put the whole thing to the side for a while... Although I assume I would have checked when I found this info....  I also tried to check passenger records, but went thru thousands of images and found nothing....

Would you have any idea how people got from Ireland to Scotland in those days? There probably aren't too many records I would guess...

all part of of the UK in those days - so no passenger lists or immigration records

The place for Scottish records is the Scotlands people website - it's a pay website

Ya, I may have gotten it from there, bought credits at some point... Can't afford to buy more just to see maybes though....

I spent so many hours searching the Canadian passenger records, they are un indexed, had to read page by page of handwritten lists, and found nothing..

So, in the end, I can't be sure of any birth record, can't be sure of any census, can't find any immigration records, and any info I have from when she was already in Canada tells me nothing of her time/family in Ireland/Scotland...
Hopefully the cert will lead me in the right direction...

Hello, like you I'm searching for the Carolan family from this area.  I have an Alice Ally Carolan (1844 - 1873/74) reportedly in Tullyunshin.  She is the daughter of Michael Mick Carolan (1821 - 1888 Cootehill) and Mary ?  The family likely ties in
