Are you sure the name is Welsby? I'm certain I know a similar name, but can't quite recollect it.
-
Hi Humfrey,
The marriage of Thomas Humphrey WELSBY and Winifred Tysilio Castle THOMAS took place in 1917 at SS Mary & Helen's church at Neston (www.cheshirebmd.org.uk)
I can't see a birth registration for Thomas Humphrey WELSBY in 1890 - do you know where he was born? A copy of the marriage certificate would give you Thomas's father's name and occupation if you don't already have it.

Chris, yes I am positive. The company was started in1813 by Henry Welsby, he had a son Thomas, then I get stuck going forwards and back .

Hello again,
There is a will for a Henry WELSBY in 1842 from Chester, Wine and Spirit merchant if you are sure that this is your family. You can search and order a copy online from Cheshire Records Office using this link:
http://archivedatabases.cheshire.gov.uk/RecordOfficeWillEPayments/search.aspx
There is also a much later will for Walter WELSBY, wine merchant (1923) who was married to Annie Kate WELSBY - they seem to use the middle name Humfrey, is this your family?
Jean
-
There is a birth on IGI :- 1st December 1889 at Farnworth, Lancashire to John and Elizabeth Welsby.
Regards
Malky

Jean, I think Thomas HUmfrey may have been born in1895, he joined the royal navy,he may have lied about his age.

There is a baptism for Thomas Welsby 15th January 1813 which would fit the Thomas in the 1861 census - he is the son of Henry and Mary Welsby of Queen Street, Excise Officer.
This would seem to link Thomas with the Henry that you mentioned previously.

Marriage of Thomas WELSBY & Anne DEAKIN 1st September 1839 at Chester St Mary. He is a wine merchant, father Henry WELSBY.
On www.familysearch.org:
Henry WELSBY married Mary LEECH 23 May 1809 at St Nicholas, Liverpool by licence
On http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/
I think Henry remarried 5 May 1816 at Chester St John to Mary BEDWARD. On the same site there is a burial for a Mary WELSBY aged 39 on 23 February 1815.

Hi Humfrey,
You will enjoy Chester if you haven't been before, it is a really beautiful place. The places linked with your family are probably still there, certainly White Friars and Queen St are.
If you are going to visit the records office ring and book a microfilm reader as they do get busy - the staff will be able to help you.
There are also alot of Cheshire Records available here: http://www.findmypast.co.uk/content/cheshire/about.html - you will need to purchase credits or a subscription although you may be able to get a free trial to get you started.

Hi
I'm not sure if you have researched TH Welsby's naval career, but there are two service records available for him on the National Archives website (ADM 196 series). In addition to his war service, for which he received the Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal he was also awarded the Royal Humane Societies Bronze Medal for rescuing a man from a sinking ship on 28 April 1917 - RHS Case No. 43290.
The ship involved was possibly the Medina a defensively armed merchant ship that was topedoed without warning, and sunk with the loss of 6 lives (3 miles ENE of Start Point).

Hi
Overleigh cemetery in Chester has a searchable database - there are a couple of entries for Welsby -
Just input the surname and you should see burials for Anne widow of Thomas wine merchant and Elizabeth widow of Thomas. They are both buried in the same grave - number P10889.
If you search again using just the grave number(no other details) you should be able to see who else is buried in the same grave. (Charles and Francis -although the surname appears to be spelt differently -possibly an error?)
http://archivedatabases.cheshire.gov.uk/cms/LacOverleighCemetery/home.aspx
Hope this helps

Hi
No I had not done any research on Thomas Humfrey Welsby's naval service.
He sounds like a bit of a hero,I shall certainly keep looking.
Thank you.

Hello HUmfrey,
The Welsby jigsaw is progressing and I can advise you that there are entries on the Freemen of Chester database as follows:
Henry Welsby. Occupation: Liquor Merchant. Abode: Chester. Made Free: 13 July 1813. Made Free by Apprenticeship.
Walter Welsby. Abode: 14 Nicholas Street, Chester. Occupation: Wine Merchant. Made Free 1 January 1880. Made Free by birth.
Nicholas Street stands in Chester to this day.
This database is searchable online and is on the Cheshire Record Office site.

Hello Humfrey,
I lived in Chester for years and moved away quite recently. I am sure I recall a shop by the name of Welsby in Chester in relatively recent years. I think it was in Watergate St.
The Chester Heritage and History Centre on Bridge St Row might have some information on the Welsby family and businesses in Chester.
Jo.
-
Hello Jo,
The shop was at 40 Bridge street, I believe that is on the Rows, but closed down in 1970 ,did you ever go in?

Hi,Silvery,
Thank you, what a great building, I really must visit Chester.
I think " welsby villa" and I share the same great great grandfather. I must find out more.
Humfrey.
-
Hi again Humfrey,
There are at least 3 trees on ancestry where people are researching the same family. Thomas 1813 died at Southport in 1882 and probate was granted to Walter Welsby, wine & spirit merchant of Chester, and Charles Welsby, barrister at law, of Southport. He left £9225 2s 6d.
Have a look here to see how much that is compared to today:

The shop I remember was an opticians I think. It was in recent years, about 10 years ago and earlier. The shop in Bridge St was before my time. The building is still there though.

I am John Humfrey Welsby's daughter. He was the last of the line of family wine merchants in Bridge Street, Chester. I can provide lots of information about the Welsby family to Humfrey or other researchers. Thomas Humfrey Welsby was my uncle and the 'black sheep' of the family. He emigrated to California with a lady (not his wife): his brother Sydney was killed in the war in Mesopotamia 9now Iraq), so my father, the only remaining brother, was required to give up his studies (law, in Oxford) and take over the family business. The company records of Thomas Welsby and Co are in the Chester archives. Humfrey was my grandmother's maiden name: she was reckoned to come from a 'good' family so everyone got it as a second name (even the girls).
-
I am sorry for not replying sooner. My father was HUmfrey Walter Keith Welsby, son of Thomas Humfrey. I knew from my mother that he was the black sheep, I do have a photo of him.
My research has been a challenge as I only had my grandfathers name ,and the wine and spirits business,to work on.
I have got back to Henry born 1772,but need to fill in many gaps. I do not live to far from Chester, and will coming to the records office in the city Thursday 23rd of February.
It would be wonderful if you could help with all your information.
Are you my aunt?
Humfrey
-
neeWelsby was your father's first cousin. Her father and your grandfather were brothers. So you would be a first cousin once removed.
-
Thank you Silvery, I knew I must be something , I have so few relations,so a first cousin once removed is exciting.
Humfrey
-
Absolutely right. Too short notice for me to get to Chester archives on 23rd though.
-
Nee Welsby,
I really was not expecting you to come to Chester, sorry if you thought that.
I would like your help,I know nothing about the Humfrey family,my brother had Humfrey as his middle name.
Did you know my grandfather? When did he go to California ?
Did you know my father, his brother Oliver and sister Diana ?
I would be grateful for any information you have .
Humfrey
-
Humfrey - I never knew your grandfather Thomas Humfrey Welsby as the siblings differed widely in age: my father was born in 1908 and your g/father was at least 20 years older., which accounts for your being a generation 'lower' than me. He went to California some time in the late 1910's, I guess. When I travelled round the /states on a Greyhound bus in 1967, I stopped off in Menlo Park, where he was supposed to be, and went in a phone booth to look at the phone directory but found no Welsbys. I never knew your father (or of his existence), or of his brother. I have heard of Diana and think my father kept in touch for a while with her. Thomas's brothers and sisters (I think in the right order downwards in age) were: Thomas Humfrey, Sydney Humfrey, Ruth H (married name Inwood, lived in Twickenham, Margaret H (married name Browne or Merrick Browne, S of England, always known as Robin, as she was little with thin legs), Audrey H (spinster, had very exciting career in The Hague, Holland and Geneva during the war and afterwards as secretary to the President of the International Court of Justice), Judith H (maried name Benson, husband was a vicar in Presteigne, then Radnorshire) and my father John H. You have in fact LOADS of first cousins once removed, although I am not in contact with most of them. Your great grandfather, Thomas H Welsby's father, was Walter Welsby who married Annie Kate Humfrey. on ist October 1884 - I have a clock in a wooden case (which used to be in a black marble case but wouldn't fit on the mantelpiece when they moved). It has a silver plaque on the front saying it was a present from the Dee Oil Company for their wedding, with the date.
My father was born at 1 Chichester St, Chester, which is down Liverpool Road, but I know the family lived in Curzon Park later - either 5 Curzon Pk N or S. The Dee Oil Co was near Welsby Villa, I think, but have never researched it - not sure if it was connected with Humfreys or Welsbys. I am very interested in your branch of the family as very little has ever been heard of them. My father was a Freeman of the City of Chester, as were his father and grandfather. Not sure if your grandfather ever took it up before his exodus to the US. The society of the time in Chester must have been very close, stultifying and easily shocked: divorce was not at all acceptable there.
Re the photo showing Thos Welsby and Co - 40 Bridge St is the building on the LEFT of the photo, with Linenhall St between it and the half timbered one on the R. The interior was fantastic, a real timewarp, going back a long way with gas lighting to all the cellars (3 floors), which also kept the air humid and the temperature constant.
Don't know what else to tell you at present - what else do you want to know?
-
Hello nee Welsby, thank you for all the information. I would like to know about Annie kate Humfrey, where she came from and who her parents were.
Not a lot to tell you about my side of the family. Thomas Humfrey married Winifred Tysillio Castle Thomas in 1917. Her father was Walter Aubrey Thomas architect of the Liver Biildings and many others in Liverpool.
Children. Diana married Oleg Heoffding they moved to USA after the war. He was an interesting man,he and his brother are worth reading about, just google them.
Oliver John Murray , died 1953 I think it was war related .
HUmfrey Walter Keith, my father died 1953.
I had a brother Peter Humfrey he died just over a year ago.
I think some of the silver I inherited was from the Welsby family.
I had a lovely day in Chester , what a beautiful city,I will go again
Hope to hear from you. Humfrey

If you go to family search
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
select (on the left) census
select 1881 British from the census box
enter Anne Kate Humfrey in the names boxes
select countries England, county Cheshire, city/town = St mary on the Hill
enter
She is about the sixth on the list. click on the name. Then to the top right of the page click on household.
Then you will see her with the family.
Ref for ancestry RG11/3556/35/22
St Mary on the Hill is behind Chester Castle and courtroom. But their address is 27 Hough Green, which is on the way to Saltney, and would be a very substantial house, and is right by Curzon Park, also substantial houses (the older ones).

Hi silvery, thank you . as you see I am not very good at this, still learning.
But I did have them all listed just not sure, as I thought it was Annie not Anne.
Annie was probably just a pet name.
Thanks again for all your help. Humfrey

Dear All,
It has been fascinating to read all about the Welsby's and Humfreys etc. I am wondering if anyone has any further info on Margaret Humfrey Browne (nee Welsby)? - having googled etc for the last few hours, I now have a little ...
For some time I believed my grandmother's cousin Meyrick Gouldsbury Browne had died - the last report of him I'd found was 'wounded and missing' in July, 1916! Yesterday I found out he'd married Margaret in 1920!!! I rushed around saying "He's not dead! He's not dead!" as though I was transported back 96 years! I was thrilled to say the least. And now I have found all of you ...
If someone would like to catch up on this side of the family, I'd be happy to continue on as a private post.
Meanwhile, coincidentally, Meyrick's cousin Annesley, a naval doctor, was awarded the DSC in a similar situation to Thomas Humfrey - ie. rescuing sailors from a torpedoed ship!
Looking forward to hearing from anyone.
Kind regards,
Francesr
-
This is a PS to my previous post ...
Would anyone be able to check the 1911 census for Annesley George Lennon Browne, 20, born Southsea, Hampshire, Parish St George Hanover Square, London? I would like an address and who the other people were registered there - ie. were they relatives, or was it a private boarding house eg.
I also understand that Annesley's cousin Meyrick Gouldsbury Browne's military records are in the National Archives in London. As I am in Australia, I am wondering if anyone could look these up or suggest a 'line of approach'? The details as follows: WO 339/23585
I'd be most grateful. Thanks very much.
Kind regards,
Francesr

You're able to search the National Archives UK online
I think that if records aren't available online you can order them.

Hullo HUmfrey and silvery,
Thank you very much for this - just what I wanted. The boarders were an odd mix!
I have found the following obituary you might find interesting re Margaret Humfrey Welsby - her sister Audrey wasn't the only one who lead an interesting life.
http://www.queens.cheshire.sch.uk/Mainfolder/havemynde/1970.pdf
If this doesn't work, type in "Have Mynde" and you will find the link to the school magazines page, click on the image for the 1970 edition, and "Welsby" in the search window.
Kind regards,
Francesr

The link does work. go to the left of the page, and click on the binoculars, and put in Welsby.

Can anyone help me confirm my research.
Henry Welsby married to Mary leech in 1809.
Iam trying to find his parents, I think they maybe John Welsby and Ellen Dobson married in1764 she was from Winwick. They had 8 children.

Humfrey,
I'm Diana's kid. I found your thread while searching for information on her brothers, Humfrey (your father) and Oliver. I knew your grandfather and mine, T.H. Welsby, slightly when I was young -- after growing up without him in her life, Diana was able to get in touch with him circa 1958 or 1960 after coming across his name in the phone book (!). He lived well past 1960 -- I can't remember exactly when he died, but I remember his moving from Menlo Park to the San Diego area circa 1968, and he lived well into the '70's. (I have to confess I wasn't too fond of him -- he was a controlling type, and ended up disinheriting my mother when she -- well into her sixties -- refused to go along with what he thought was proper behavior.) Our grandmother, Winifred, lived near us in California while I was growing up, but I don't think there was ever any contact between the two of them at that stage.
Diana died in 2002. She would never talk about her brothers, for some reason. I'd be grateful for any information you can give me about them. I know they were both in the military during WWII, and that they both died in 1954, but I know nothing about how it was that they both died so young. I do have some pictures of them as children and young adults which I'd be happy to scan and send you if you like.
I was sorry to hear that Peter passed away; I did meet him when I was 11 or so, and remember him as a happy kid. Did we meet then, as well?
-
Hello EvanH, we have met you came to Devon, you would have been about 13? We both have a love of horses. I never met grandfather TH but do have one photo, I discovered the name of the lady he ran off to the USA with. I remember Winifred she used to send me wonderful books for my birthday which have now been passed to my three grandchildren. I have very fond memories of your father, i still have the birthday cards he made for me. Diana came to England a few times, you are right she told me nothing and my mother was the same.
My father was killed in farming accident in 1954. I was told that Oliver's death was war related, perhaps post traumatic stress. They are buried next to each other in sussex, A very beautiful and peaceful church.
I have done a Welsby family tree back to 1573. The Humfrey family is very interesting as is the other family name Glegge.
I would love some photos. I think we can exchange our email addresses through Roots if you would like to.
Regards Humfrey.
-
Yes, I was the horsey one. I remember visiting Devon at 12 or so, and another holiday, when I was 15ish, when you joined us for trip -- Greece? Italy? I'm sure if I dug around Oleg's slide collection, I could find photos...
Gosh, first cousins. How nice to be back in touch, especially when neither of us has much in the way of bio-family. Let's exchange email addresses -- I think I need one more post here for us to be able to PM each other.
-
This should do it, I think. ;D
-
Hello EvanH, Humfrey and others,
My late uncle always spoke highly of Diana, his second cousin, whom he met several times in the U.S. or England or both, probably before or shortly after the Second War. Sharing a common ancestor with Diana and her mother Winifred makes me their 2d cousin once removed and 1st cousin twice removed, respectively (I believe!). I have quite a bit of info on the Glegge and Thomas connections but not much on the Welsby family. Would be happy to share data, pictures. Seems that Thomas Humfrey Welsby had quite a colourful life! (I have a copy of his Naval records, 4 pages pdf, and a few other items)
All best,
BGlegge
-
Hello B Glegge, I would be very interested in all the information on the Glegge and Thomas families .i have researched the Welsby family back to 1573 and would be happy to let you have copies of all I have. I am very interested in my grandfather T H Welsby, as I never knew him.
I am not home in the UK ay present back in about three weeks. Perhaps you would like to exchange email addresses through Roots.
Do keep in touch.

Will be happy to send you all the information on the Welsby and Humfrey families. Also any photos I have.
After this post we can go private, so I will send you my email address.

Hi There,
My name is Cathy and I believe that my Aunt, Annie Doreen was married to Humfrey Walter Keith Welsby from 27/02/1946 to 24/03/1950.
I was most surprised to read what has been posted about him especially about him having a daughter. I would be very interested to find out any more information about him.
Many thanks,
Cathy.
-
Hello Cathy, yes Humfrey Walter Keith Welsby was my father. I was born 19/10/49. There was always a mystery about a first wife. My parents got married after I was born, and we moved to the USA. I also had a brother who died a few years ago. My father was killed in Sussex when I was nearly five. I remember him well and have many photos. I would be very happy to exchange information. Do I have any other siblings.
Hope to hear from you again. Humfrey.
-
Hi Humfrey,
Thankyou for getting back to me.
My Aunt Doreen is now 97 years old and doing well.
She never really talked about her husband (she called him Hugh) and I only just found out these details.
It seems that if you were born in 1949, my aunt was still married to your father??
Are you able to provide any light on this?
Thanks,
Cathy.
-
I am really sorry I know nothing about those years 1946 till I was born 1949. My mother called him Hugh.
I don’t think she ever got over his death even though she married again, I think that my stepfather didn’t like her talking about him. I did know his mother and sister and my cousins. They all stayed in the USA. I now live in North Yorkshire. It would be good to know what your aunt remembers, but then he may have hurt her. There is so much I could tell you . I just remember missing him - I loved him. It would be good to talk so many memories. Humfrey.
-
Hi Humfrey,
I hope that all is well in your part of the world.
My aunt was good friends with either Humfreys sister or mother or both. My aunt can’t remember a lot and she never talked about him.
There was talk that my aunt would go and visit a little girl though we don’t know who that was. Just a few questions: Do you know how your father died? Do you have a birth certificate?
-
Morning Cathy, it’s beautiful in my part of the world. I have my fathers birth certificate - born 9/10/1924 in Christlleton Cheshire, baptism, Christleton church 10/11/1924.
He was killed March 1954. A farming accident moving a bull.
I have never found any information about your aunt on line. My mother said the marriage was annulled, who knows after all this time, not the sort of thing I would have asked my mother. There seems to be a lot I don’t know.
It would seem that your aunt and maybe your mother might know what happened everyone else has passed away.
If I can help with anything else please ask.
Humfrey.
-
Good evening Humfrey,
Its been a beautiful winter’s day here.
Thankyou for that information. I was wondering what was your Mum’s name and do you have a Birth Certificate. Was just wondering about the little girl that my Aunt, I am told used to visit over a period of time.
We had heard that your father had died in an incident involving a bull.
My Aunt, Annie Doreen Standard, as I said does not remember very much and in her words… “Cathryn, it was such a long time ago”. She did/does have a marriage certificate as she needed to prove her past and present marital status to Centrelink (Social Services) when she came to Australia in 1960.
In the years prior to that and after the marriage annulment she had quite an interesting life. She went to work at 84 Charing Cross Road in London (1951-1958). If you are familiar with the book and movie of the same name, her life and the lives of those who worked there were made into a book and a movie of the same name- you may be familiar with it. Doreen spent a year in South Africa (1958-1959).
I guess your Mum understandably, would not have wanted to talk about the situation in those early days, since my aunt was still married to your Dad when you were born! It would have been a pretty big deal in those days and I guess not easy for anyone involved.
My Aunt Doreen is still alive and well; my Mum passed away in 1999 and my Dad (Doreen's brother) in 2016. The life of my aunt during those times was never brought up by my Mum or Dad. We (us kids at least) never knew she was married and she did not tell us- maybe it was, as you said, a hurtful time in her life.
And here we are in 2020… its all very interesting stuff and with the internet all this is so much easier to access.
If there’s anything I can do for you, please let me know. With my aunts permission, i am tidying up her documents. If I find anything that I think may interest you, I will let you know.
Best wishes,
Cathy.

Hi Cathy, would I be right thinking you live in Australia? My father had a great love of books he collected some beautiful ones that I have and treasure. Maybe it was that connection that brought him and your aunt together. Before farming he was a picture restorer, but farming and gardening were in his blood, something I have inherited. He also served in the RAF , an upper gunner in bomber command, I have his flying log book.
Would you like to make this link private? I could then send you some photos.
Best wishes Humfrey.

Hi Humfrey,
I hope that all is well for you in Yorkshire. It’s a wet, rainy day here.
Yes, I do live in Australia- I came out here by ship with my family as “10 Pound Poms”.
My dad also served in the RAF.
Yes, making it a private link would be good.
Don’t know how to go about doing that though.
Thanks for the latest information.
Cathy.

Hello all,
I am new to this forum so let me quickly introduce myself: I am a PhD student in the Netherlands and have just finsihed my dissertation which is a biography on British historian Eileen Power (1889-1940). In view of having my book published, I am currently trying to sort out copyright for all the materials that I work with. This includes a caricature of Eileen Power that was drawn by Margaret Welsby (later Browne) around 1916, who was one of Power's students at Girton College Cambridge. Copyright for using this image lies with the heirs of Welsby but unfortunately the archives don't hold any information about who these people might be. I googled and came across this forum and thread about the Welsby family. I read the post by Francesr dated 20 March in which they mention that their grandmother's cousin was Meyrick Gouldsbury Browne who in 1920 married Margaret. This is the Margaret Welsby Browne that I am looking for! I am therefore hopig that either Francesr or someone else on this forum is able to tell me who the current living relative of Margaret Welsby is so that I might reach out to them and ask their permission to use the cartoon? I greatly appreciate any help anyone might be able to give me! With best wishes, Rozemarijn

Dear Rozemarijn,
Sorry not to get back to you sooner. I sent off a query (+ copy of your Rootschat post) to someone I thought might be able to help you with the caricature copyright, but alas I haven't heard from them. I'm hoping they may contact you via Rootschat.
Meanwhile, if you would like to know more about Margaret I could send you the small amount of information I have via the private route. Eileen Power would have been proud of her.
Best wishes for your dissertation.
Kind regards,
Francesr

Dear Francesr,
Many thanks for your reply and for your help! I will wait to see if they reach out to me. I am definitely interested to learn a bit more about Margaret Welsby so I would very much appreciate reading the information you have on her.
Many thanks for your help & kind regards,
Rozemarijn
