hello
James Cassidy is my great grandfather
he was born in 1817 at Kingston, Ontario, Canada
he was attested into the Hampshire 37th Regiment Of Foot when aged 15yrs on 4th Sept 1832 at Ballincollig, Co Cork, Ireland
he then served for over 15yrs at
Jamaica (3yrs)
Halifax Nova Scotia (3yrs)
Ceylon / Sri Lanka (9yrs)
then, he was discharged at Ceylon / Sri Lanka on April 13th, 1856
he was awarded the Silver Medal
where he went then, i don't know for sure
i have a note of him marrying Catherine Gallagher but i am not sure of that, neither where nor when
and importantly, i have comment from previous generations that his father was called Nicholas Cassidy
i don't know how Nicholas go to Kingston, Ontario, Canada in the first place...possibly via boat from Ireland
why did James enlist at Ballincollig, why at that precise location ?
i dunno
but i do know that in 1830, the Irish made up 42% of the regular army that were posted in Ireland, or at least among those that were in the Cork area
i know too that historically the name Cassidy comes from the County Fermanagh area
and in the 1641 Depositions, there is mention of a Phelim Cassidy (or Caiside, or whatever)
anyway, any help re James and Nicholas would be appreciated !!
docs attached related to James' discharge in 1856 at Ceylon
(i have 2 more ages on that)
kind regards
Tony

A Public tree on Ancestry shows he married Catherine Gallagher 4/2/1859 in Glasgow, Scotland and that he died there 31/10/1897 at Govan.
Looks like you will have to view certificates on Scotlands People - his marriage certificate will show both of his parents.
Yours answers lie in Scotland.

You have to be a member of Ancestry.co.uk to be able to view Public trees I'm afraid - I think that some libraries have a link enabling you to do so but you'd have to check with a library in your area.
As to Scotlands People - you have to buy credits to enable you to see copies of original documents - £7 for 30 credits.
