I'm trying to find any information on Mary Ann CUTHBERTSON, dob ?
Parents James CUTHBERTSON 1830 to 1 Aug 1899 & Maria THOMSON abt 1824 to 7 Feb 1909. Arrival Tasmania 18 Jul 1853 aboard "Coromandel" James Cuthbertson 22yrs, Maria Cuthbertson 27yrs and infant. Port of departure Southhampton.
From Maria (Thomson) Cuthbertson's will dated 1899 after the death of James, she divides a property amongst her 4 daughters Maria Elizabeth Pain Widow, Mary Ann Crawford, widow of Hobart
Clara Ellen Grubb & Margaret Susan Millhouse.
Other than the Will I have been unable to locate any links, she is listed between Maria Elizabeth & Clara Ellen on the Will so I presume she is their second daughter and more than likely born in Tasmania 1853 to 1856.
Children of James and Maria: From Tasmanian Family Links
61119 CUTHBERTSON MARIA ELIZAB 1854 (actual dob. 11 Sep 1852 London)
61116 CUTHBERTSON CLARA ELLENO 1856 Hobart
61117 CUTHBERTSON JAMES ALEXANDER 1857 "
61121 CUTHBERTSON ALFRED THOMAS 1859 "
61120 CUTHBERTSON MARGARET SUS 1861 "
61122 CUTHBERTSON CAROLINE 1863 "
61118 CUTHBERTSON THOMAS WHITFIELD 1865 "
There are 3 Mary Ann Cuthbertson's found on Tasmanian Family Links, but none link up to James & Maria, her siblings or deceased husband Crawford. The 1854 Mary Ann has another husband, 1879 - HOBART, Tasmania ( HILL, RICHARD CHARLES) is this her and she married twice?
I have no Idea.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the quick work Merlin :)
It seems that the Mary Ann Cuthbertson who married Richard Charles HILL is the same born to Maria and James 30/10/1854.
Do you have any idea where the Will entry cir 1899, Mary Ann CRAWFORD widow fits in?
I've tried trove but to date I've spotted nothing on her, I'll give the 2 husbands a go and see what pops up.
Thanks again.
Robert
-
Maria's will was written in 1899 she died in 1909.
Mary Ann CRAWFORD (nee CUTHBERTSON - formerly HILL) was a widow when her mother Maria wrote her will as Andrew CRAWFORD had died in 1898 the year before.
-
Great work and thanks heaps :)
I suppose it's to much to ask if you have spotted Maria's date of death.
By the way your information has helped me date a Cuthbertson group photo.
It was my Grand mother Ida's photo she pointed herself out along with the others to my mother but my mother forgot most of the names and also when Ida said the photo was taken.
Going by the age of Ida I always presumed it was taken in the late 1890's, there are two widows dressed in black as well as James with Maria so it places it before James' death in 1899 and post Andrew Crawford's death 1898.
Did they have any children before Andrew's death as Mary Ann is nursing a baby about 1 year old?
Thanks for your great work, you make it seem so easy.

Mary Ann CUTHBERTSON & Richard Charles HILL had three children. So it's possible that the little one she is holding is a grand child :)
There were no children to her marriage with Andrew CRAWFORD.
-
Hello Merlin,
The child Mary Ann is holding is too young to be hers from her first marriage, by a process of elimination I believe it now could be her nephew Harry, Thomas and Ada's youngest son.
I would post a copy of the photo but it exceeds the allowable file size and my computer skills aren't quite good enough to make it smaller.
Any sightings on Richard Hills dod.
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Johngirl,
Good find!
Thanks again.
Robert
-
Thats ok :)
Bit hard to read now but the headstone has done quite well for having to deal with our Tasmanian weather for all those years. ;D
Johngirl
-
Hi Johngirl
With a bit of manipulation I think I got it all except for a word before maria which was just too weathered to read.
This is what I picked up.
Erected to the memory of / JAMES CUTHBERTSON / Native of Darlington / County in Durham England / who departed this life / August 1 - 1899 / In his 70 th - Year / ???? MARIA, / beloved wife and mother / Died February 5 1909 / In her 81st Year.
Robert
-
It says Also ;D You have done very well with the rest.
If there are any more family members you would like headstones found for just ask. Can`t say I will find them but I can try.
Johngirl
-
Hi Johngirl
ALSO,
I wouldn't of picked it, I might take you up on that offer.
I will be tied up over the week end, I'll send the names and details when I get a moment.
Thanks for the offer,
Robert
-
Hi Johngirl
I wonder if I could take you up on the offer of that headstone search, the people I'm interested in is;.
Thomas HEDGES, dob Abt 1792, death July 28 1880, Hobart, burial Sandy Bay Cemetery 1/8/1880. Convict arrived Almorah & Pilot 1817.
Mary Ann Elizabeth Hedges, dob abt 1796, death 15 May 1858 Hobart buried 20th at?
I found both lots of death details in trove.
I believe Mary Ann Elizabeth Hedges is Ann Elizabeth hedges nee HARWOOD also alias Elizabeth Adams convict arrived Morley 1820. But they had a turbulent early history together and it may be another person entirely
just in case others are following the hedges family, can you reply on post "Death of John HEDGES dob 1821?"

Hi Robert,
The Sandy Bay Cemetery or Queenborough Cemetery as it was known was closed in 1944 and the land redeveloped(I think it is now part of the Hutchins School Sports Ground :'( )There are a few headstones that were relocated to the Cornelian Bay cemetery so I will go take a look for you in the next few weeks.(just concentrating getting the children back to school this week ;D0I will also go to the library and see if I can find where abouts your Mary is buried. As she passed on quite a fews years ago the Cemetery she would have been buried in probably has been made into a carpark but I will check for you as some of the very early Cemetery`s still do exist.

Hello Judb,
Great stuff! :) :)
I hope you got the kids back to school and all settled in ok.
It's strange how things just come together, I've been off line with phone line problems on and off for the last two weeks heavy rains etc. and was slowly going through the backlog of my emails the email that I opened just before your rootschat message notification was from a Cuthbertson descendant which contained a copy of the bible entries of Maria Thomson, names dates etc.
I hope C doesn't mind but I will include the Bible entry, for other researchers.
Along with the info you have sourced, the dots are being connected and the picture is becoming clearer and clearer.
I did see a copy of the 1841 census data before which the bible now confirms. What I'm delighted with the most is your details on their marriage M.E's. birth and the immigration into Tas. :) :) :) :)
I did spot a reference to the Coromandel in Tasmanian Family Links, arrivals, but couldn't find any detail on them I just assumed it probably was them, the details you have gathered puts it beyond doubt.
With the headstone search, I don't want you to put yourself out for my benefit, if it is too much of an inconvenience don't worry about it.
I'm truly grateful for everything you have done so far.
With the new facts I can now concentrate more on Maria Thomson.
Mary Ann Cuthbertson married a Richard Hill 1879, who died some time prior to 1897 then she remarried to Andrew Crawford 1897 who died 1 yr later 1898.
Thanks again,
Robert

Hi Robert,
No thats fine I love going to Cemetery`s. I also love going to the Library`s searching for information better than doing boring old housework. ;D

Hi Johngirl,
I was so ecstatic about the bible entry that I got you and Judb, mixed up at least it proves you read the entire post.
Old cemeteries do hold a certain mystique about them, thanks for the offer.
I'm very grateful to you both.

Hi Stobo,
If you go back & read through the thread from the start you will find most the information on Mary Ann CUTHBERTSON & her family.
Thomas Charles Witfield HILL doesn't have a direct line of family descendants as he was KIA as a single man in WWI. You will find his file here:
http://mappingouranzacs.naa.gov.au/details-permalink.aspx?barcode_no=3012578
Is there anything specific we can help you with?
-
Hi Merlin,
Your spot on, I'll put my brain fade down to old timers desease and med for a sore back that leaves me more than a bit fuzzy, I was looking at my old working sheet not my latest files.
If I reread the previous threads like I should of it would of jarred my memory.
Thanks for pointing out the obvious.
Robert.
-
Hi Merlin Thanks for the help I believe Mary Ann Cuthbertson had another son dob. 12/12/1880 born in Franklin. Also a daughter born in Oatlands dob.14/02/1885 .but i have no names kind regards stobo. :)

Hi Stobo,
Daughter Pearl Ruby 1885, died 1 mth old, Oatlands,
I found this article under Family notices/deaths/ in trove .

HILL.-On Wednesday, April 15, 1885, at Oatlands, Pearl Ruby, infant daughter of Richard and Mary Hill, aged 1 month.

Also
The Mercury Hobart, Tas. Saturday 18 April 1885 Monday 16 January 1882
HILL.-On Friday, January 6, at Arthur Circus, Battery Point, Richard Albert Whitfield, only son of Richard and Mary Hill, of Franklin, in his 13th month.

Hi Stobo,
I was just cross checking T.C.W. Hill on his enlistment form signed 17/8/1914 has his age as 30yrs 8mths which places his dob at the end of 1883 start 1884, I was just wondering if the boys were twins or I've been barking up the wrong tree.
Thomas Charles Witfield Hill
Service number; 41
Place of birth; Bothwell, TAS, Australia
Place of enlistment; Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Date Enlisted; 18/8/1914
Next of kin; Hill, M A (mother)
WWI file; B2455, HILL T C W
Deceased; D3548
Age at Enlistment; 30yrs 8mths.
The twin theory is definitely out the door, different birth locations unless TCW stated his age incorrectly, I must have the the wrong Richard and Mary Hill in Trove.

Hi Thanks everyone for your help, very sad to hear all of the Hill family died so young :'(The reason I was trying to find Thomas Charles Whitfield Hills family ,is Ihave a medallion given to the next of kin,on his death, who would have been Mary Ann Cuthbertson. I hoped to return it to his G,niece or newphew.since their is no direct line if any one on mary anns side of the family would like to have it I will qiiet happily post it to you.thank ou all for your help once again Stobo :)
-
To my knowledge Marry Ann Cuthbertson left no descendants, I'm related via her older sister Maria Elizabeth Cuthbertson but many other relatives exist on the Cuthbertson side even relations through her 1st husband and father of TCW, Richard Hill, may even be found.
Richard had a brother Charles John HILL 1862 and sister Mary Cooke HILL, 1866, there may be descendants of TCW's uncle and aunt who canbe found.
I haven't delved into that line of the family at all and the names and dob came to me via others, it maybe worth waiting a while to see if some more details can be found about them.
If nothing is found the War Memorial may accept it.
Mary Ann had a sad life, loosing two children early in their life then her husband Richard only a few years later, then to remarry, Andrew Crawford, who died about a year after their marriage..
Then to loose her only son TCW in WW1 it must of been devistating for her when she received that news.
The commemorative medal must of ment a great deal to her it deserves a home where it will be respected.
If you choose to leave it with the War Memorial I will be travelling that way later this year when I visit family at Yass.
Robert
-
Thanks Robert I will take your advice and try following Charles John Hill line, if no success then as you suggest the war memorial. :) :) stobo

Hello Stobo,
I have a photograph of a Cuthbertson Family gathering taken mid to late 1890's. I think I can point out Mary Ann and TCW Hill, I will send you a pm with my email address and if you want me to send you a copy reply me with your email address.
I have to do some more research on the family ANZAC's but I also have a copy of a family photo of a WW1 mounted soldier (no name) but the photo was taken in Hobart and TCW, enlisted in Melbourne so i don't think it is him.
I'll keep you up to date if I discover anything on the CJ Hill line.
Robert

Hello Stobo,
While looking for information on CJ Hill, I found even more sorrow for Mary Ann.
Just 10 days after the death of R.A.W. Hill at 13 mths of age it appears that she miscarried.

The Mercury Hobart, Tas. Tuesday 17 March 1885
BIRTHS: HILL.-On Saturday, February 14, 1885, at Oatlands, the wife of Richard C. Hill, chemist: a daughter.
Some good news, I did find that CJ Hill married in 1883 Ida Evelyne Peddar dob. 31/10/1863. they had a son Charles Pedder Hill 1893 Sorell, Tas.
But nothing from there, so far.
The more I delve into Mary Ann's life the more poignant it becomes, if nothing becomes of your search, I would be honoured to be custodian of her medallion.

Hi Robert thank you for the photo off T.C. W. Hill is is great to put a face to who you are looking for.The news that T.C.W had a sister is also very heartening there is a plaque to T.C.W in the soldiers walk Hobart. saying that when Mary Ann Cuthbertson left Abbotsford in Vic.she lived in Lambart ave. Sandy bay.I will try finding out more about F. W. Barlow. Thanks once again Stobo :)
-
F W Barlow was Francis William BARLOW he married Beatrice Alice HILL 1911 in Victoria.
They returned to Tasmania by 1912 as there are births registered to them in Hobart from 1912 onwards.

Good find! :)
I was having trouble locating her I wrongly assumed that the F W was her initials.
Do you have a dob for Beatrice, and names and dob of their children.

It appears that TCW Hill had two surviving siblings Beatrice Alice and her brother Alf, who she refers to in a memorial notice in memory of her mothers death where she mentions her brother Alf's death.

I have not been able to locate either of their births or births of any children other than a son in 1914, but she mentions family in the notice so I presume there must be more descendants from Beatrice and or Alf.

Dear Robert
Thankyou for your prompt reply most of this information I have including reading trove - my great grandfather Alf was born in Hobart and raised by his grandparents
(Maria & James). I was interested to find out any details about Maria after she left Tasmania. Do you have any information of the Cuthbertson's in Durham. I do know a little but a lot is guess work!
Thanks
Charmaine

hello Charmaine,
I have made contact with Flora's grand daughter in NZ she has given me copies of wonderful photos of Maria, if you have access to Google Picasa, I can give you access to my web album. Anne has also filled in some gaps but I'm still trying to find out more about Maria's NZ movements, still a work in progress.
Re- Cuthbertson and Durham, Anne chased them through available English census'.
I'm glad to assist but I'm a vvvery slow typists, really a cut and paste man, the size of the file is too large for a post, if you forward your email address through a personal message or the email address I sent via a pm, I'll send you the lot.
PS. I'm going away shortly and will be unavailable until around mid Nov.

Hi,
I believe you were looking for relatives of Thomas Charles Whitfield Hill. Thomas was my Great Uncle, his younger brother, Alf, was my Grandfather Alfred Hill. Alfred's son, Edward Thomas Hill was my father. You also mentioned about a medallion which I was keen to hear where it ended up. Hopefully it made its way to the National War Memorial. If you have any more informationI would love to hear about it. Hoping to hear from you.

Hi Enola,
I have tried contacting stobo, at last known e address, to inform him of your enquiry, and find out the fate of the medallion, but presently I haven't received a reply, if any information comes my way I will pass it on.
If I can assist you in any other way, feel free to contact me by PM.
