Title: Marriage Banns - Clifton Hampden - Help!
Post by: abro49 on Tuesday 10 January 12 15:52 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if it is possible to view the original marriage banns for Clifton Hampden?

I know that William Witchelow married Sarah Gibbons on 20 Sept 1755, this has been confirmed for me.  However, I do not know where William comes from as he was not born in Clifton Hampden.

The name Witchelow always varies in spelling but I was thinking if it was possible to view the original banns I might be able to use his fathers christian name and Williams age at the time of marriage to trace him back, that is if banns even existed at this time.

Thanks in advance

Ann

Ann,

The Clifton Hampden PR transcript (OFHS) only lists 4 Banns  1765 - 1791.

In terms of the marriage, it seems the custom in the parish to record where a person came from (if they weren't resident in Clifton Hampden), in this case, there is no indication, suggesting he was  resident in the parish.

It may be possible to ask Oxfordshire Records Office whether the original registers contain more Banns.

Harry
