I am trying to find any information on the origins of my ancestor Enos Lewis. I know that he married Annie Orland on 20 Nov 1866. Enos was born in 1845. He died on 11 Jul 1879 and was reportedly buried in the Little River Cemetery, Banks Peninsula. I have not actually sighted a headstone there. Internet searches have returned a plethora of Enos Lewis's however, without any knowledge of where he came from or when that occurred, it is difficult to narrow this down. Does anyone have information on this? Happy to discuss further.

Hi Mokihi77, and welcome to RootsChat and the New Zealand Board.
Little River Cemetery is administered by Christchurch City Council so a first step would be to approach them to confirm the burial and gain any other information. They might be able to tell you who the funeral director was and you might be fortunate enough to trace extant records although I doubt it after all this time.
Do you have Enos LEWIS's death certificate? Does it mention his parents or his place of birth? Have you searched Papers Past for any newspaper mention of him or his death (likewise any mention of his wife of her family)?
Do you know anything else about him or his wife that might help us help you?

Could he be the Enos LEWIS born in the March quarter of 1841 at Aberystwyth in the county of Cardiganshire (which I assume is in Wales)?

Just a thought...you say Enos was born in 1845. Is this deduced from his reported age at death or from a definite source?
And do you have his 1866 marriage certificate. Any clues there, such as his occupation?

wow thank you all for the quick replies. Spades, unfortunately we do not have any official certificates for Enos which makes this search all the more difficult. His wife Annie Orland is buried in the Waimairi Cemetery in Christchurch - althea this might be the thing your reference is pointing me to. Suzy W - yes this is helpful, I understand my granduncle had some input into that website and he and I are in regular contact. I think I will approach the Christchurch City Council and see what can be unearthed there (no pun intended). The main puzzle we have is that Annie and Enos had four children prior to his death. Then another child carrying the name Lewis was born 5 years after his supposed date of death which was calculated from his wifes headstone I believe. Without certificates it is really difficult to confirm or deny anything! Thanks again.

Hi Mokihi77,
At present you have too many unknowns. ???
I strongly recommend that you purchase Enos's death certificate (unless your uncle or someone else can provide you with a copy). This should give you the names of his parents. The cost is well worth the knowledge you will gain.

Hi Mokihi77,
It pays to purchase a printout which is a copy of the record held at BDM's,it also has the added bonus of being a little cheaper ;D ;D.
There is often a little more info on a printout too.
Cheers Janette

I have searched https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/home/ between 1875 and 1890 for another Enos LEWIS (omitting the fist name) using the mother's name Ann, Anne and Annie but no record appears.
